I played my first ever battle in MTW today (the rest of the time I just simmed - I have missed so much). I went head to head against Aargon (sp?). I am the English and it is very early in the game. Anyway, I attacked them with 600 men compared to their 300. I easily routed everyone one of their units except the Royal Knights. In return, the Royal Knights routed everyone of my seven or eight units. I think they only lost two men.
I suffered alot of losses and they killed my four star general. I am pretty pissed about that. I can not get one of my princes down there becuase the French are blocking the way. Now the pope is complaining about me attacking them, yada yada yada.
What a fun game. I can see how CR did a great dynasty with it. Does anyone have any battle tips or any of the sort?

Quick question....I am getting ready to into battle and I want to drag my troops in to the righ formation that I want. I am missing something? Can I not do this or am I just dumb?

Another question....come on guys where is the MTW experts at?
If I have a prince who is three younger than he is older brother, can I make him the one who would get to become a king? (There is a name for that but it escapes me).

The heir to the throne, perhaps? No, you can not designate your own heir.

Thats it. Damn his brother is so much better plus he has won battles and such.
If anyone esle has any tips let me know. I am like a sponge wanting to soak up knowledge. Throw water on me people!

You'll learn quickly that sometimes certain "sacrifices" have to be made for the better of the kingdom. ;)
Might think about having your unworthy heir go into a rather lopsided battle if it's that big of a difference between the two.

Have an assasin kill your son. Of course, if he gets caught and your intentions are exposed, all hell breaks loose.
But thus is the life of a King.

Calis has the right of it.
Theoretically, if you can get your assassins highly ranked enough, you can just assassinate those you want not to be king. I have never managed to get one high enough to kill a prince though.
You have really played without doing the battles? I thought the strategy map was a bit stale without that. Not bad, but not particularly compelling. Being able to control the units on the battlefield and see how they fight gives an added depth to the decision making in the main map though.
Great game, even if I have played it out. When does Rome: TW come out?

Quick question....I am getting ready to into battle and I want to drag my troops in to the righ formation that I want. I am missing something? Can I not do this or am I just dumb?Yes, you can definitely do this. The specifics are spelled out in the rules manual under "Battles."
A few general rules of thumb I try to follow in battles:
1. Watch you own flanks, and try to hit the enemy on theirs. Not only are flank attacks typically devastating, but a unit's morale is bolstered when their flank is protected (it will show this on their panel when you click on them).
2. Be wary of unit fatigue levels. This can be a killer in hilly terrain. Cavalry gets gassed quickly if they charge. Move them into position and then charge them when they get close.
3. If advancing units across ample distances against an enemy with archers, use the spread unit formation instead of the tight one.
4. Keep a reserve, to exploit successes on the attack, or to plug holes on defense.
5. Watch out for pursuit of fleeing enemies. Sure, it's great to run them down because they're easy kills, but your army can rapidly become scattered to the winds chasing them.
6. Try to have a plan. Don't just move your units at enemy ones. Look at what they've got against you...any militia or peasants you can hit and scatter quickly? Select targets for your archers carefully. Try and learn the strengths and weaknesses of the enemy's forces and plan accordingly.
Good luck!

Off of memory, they arn't going with the "table-top" like gameplay. It's going to be real-time, I think. What I read is very general and I'm not exactly sure what it will mean until I play a demo of it.

MTW is an absolutely great game. If you find it to easy, there is a great mod a guy built. Goto www.totalwar.org or here is the link directly to the modders site. He spent alot of time to make it "more realistic and difficult" I would recommend playing the game on hard instead of expert if you play his mod.

Correct, they scrapped what made the Total War series brilliant: turn-based strategic and real-time tactic. It had been fervent dream that they (or someone) would adopt this model for the Civil War and Rev War and others.
