Just curious as I'm going to start designing a new website soon. Thanks to anyone who decides to participate. http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/%7Efof/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif

Well, since you asked (there's actually two)..one is going to be dedicated to a new TCY dynasty I will be embarking on soon. This site will be rather straight-forward and put up very fast. I'm aiming toward something as simple as Solecismic's. http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/%7Efof/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
The other site will take longer to put together. It's going to be one of those personal rant/diary/poetry sorts (as I like to write). It's going to implement PHP and should be rather nice when finished.

I do traffic analysis for a web site, and I can tell you that our visitors are 27% 800x600, 55% 1024x768, and the remainder at various higher resolutions.

I'm on 1280 x 1024 right now, but that's only because my work monitor won't go up to 1600 x 1200 like my home one will. I can't believe there are people still at 800x600.

(Of course, any time you're designing a site you'll want to factor in the demographics of your target audience.)

I can't believe you can see a screen at 1600x1200. That seems ludicrously small to me.
I like to go easy on the eyes, you see...

No, of course not. That's why it's ludicrous. :p

Just in case anyone is wondering as to why '1152x864' is an option..that's my setting. I'm not sure how I became set on that one.

I guess I need glasses. I have a hard time reading anything above 1024x768.

Everyone does know about the large fonts option in Windows, right? You can set your fonts to be bigger than the default and take advantage of the higher resolution.

Yeah, but that only works for the windows bars, right? It doesn't seem to do anything about non-MS apps or web pages.

The hit counter on the home page of my web site, sovereignstar, shows this:
1024x768 - 47%
800x600 - 42%
1280x1024 - 6%
the rest - 5% (640x480,1600x1200 etc)
Those figures have been accumulated over the past 18 months so I guess the current figures will be shifted towards the higher resolutions.
Looking at the stats for the secure order page there's a slight shift towards the higher resolutions (about 3%) which could indicate that those who order are slightly more affluent and have higher end PCs than the whole.
I also suspect that at least half of my hits are from non USA surfers (soccer fans). As PCs tend to be more expensive than in the USA this might explain why the percentages are skewed towards the lower resolutions compared with the above poll (which I presume are mainly Americans).

1280x1024 is as high as my monitor would go...though the laptop I'm frequently on, is set best at 1400x1050. Anything lower than that, all my fonts get jacked up.

No, it will hit most fonts unless an app specifically does stuff to change the screen mapping. I know because FOF Extractor wasn't working because the 120 DPI setting added about 2-3 pixels to each character's height in FOF.

With my 22" CRT, 1600x1200. I'm thinking of bumping it past that. I had 1600x1200 on a 21" screen previously, and things look a little big now.
As a note, i noticed my decline in seeing things from a distance coincided with the year i changed my res from 1024x768 to 1600x1200. Maybe a coincidence, maybe not. Either way i'm keeping my high res:).

1280 x 1024 for normal windows usage, For non text-sim gaming I usually go up to 1600x1200.

No, it will hit most fonts unless an app specifically does stuff to change the screen mapping. I know because FOF Extractor wasn't working because the 120 DPI setting added about 2-3 pixels to each character's height in FOF.And of course you can easily change font sizes in IE, although it won't affect style sheets.
And in answer to your question about whether everyone knows this, it depends on your target audience. If you're running Slashdot, then yes, everyone knows. If you're running eBay, then most people won't know (or won't want to be bothered with it).
Bottom line is that for a lot of folks out there, a nice cheap 800x600 monitor is plenty.

Also remember it depends on your monitor size.
I got myself a 21 in flat screen sony trinitron and 1280 x 1024 works great for me.
