Hmm... I have to give Cougar high marks for his comedy team of Sellers and Tomlin, and also for Morgan Freeman as supporting actor...

oykib's 1-2 of Denzel and Clint Eastwood rates highly, though the rest of his team is maybe a bit weak...

but I might have to give my award to Karim, with Gregory Peck, Steve Martin, Meryl Streep, Sophia Loren, Lucille Ball, Alec Guinness, Annette Bening, Ingmar Bergman... yep, yep, my vote goes to Karim.

No Kevin Bacon in the supporting actor category? OK, so maybe he's not critically acclaimed, but on sheer volume alone...

I spit on Kevin Bacon!

After Sleepers I've lost all respect for the man.

He frightens me.

Kidman, Monroe, Weaver...can you say 4-way?

Karim and ntndeacon has the two best teams, in my opinion.

One man’s assessment:

SplitP: I particularly liked the two Gene picks (Wilder & Hackman). Hitchcock is an obvious strongpoint, as a #1 pick should be.

WSUCougar: I like my team. I really wanted Clint Eastwood or Steve McQueen in the Action category, but settled for Mel Gibson. I waited too long to fill the Musical category. Calis stole Madelaine Kahn from me.

NoMyths: This team is all over the place (Ellen Burstyn? ASIA CARERRA?!?), but there is some very strong talent here. A very solid entry.

3Ric: If I had to pick, 3Ric would get my vote for the strongest group of talent. Every pick was a good one, IMO, with the exception of David Lean (I say that only because I am unfamiliar with him). Hanks was an absolute steal.

Oykib: Clint’s my boy, and Grace Kelly and Bing Crosby were strong selections, but I’m not sold on the rest of this team. Just my opinion!

Calis: Loved the Cary Grant pick, and I already mentioned Madelaine Kahn. But the rest…

Karim: This team is just packed with talent, but I have a personal bias because I don’t care for Steve Martin and am not a big Lucille Ball fan. Probably the #2 team overall in my mind.

Sloan: A very strong foundation, but did not finish the work he’d started.

Shorty: A decent modern assemblage of talent. Incomplete.

Barkeep49: The Kurosawa pick was inspired. Flynn is the original swashbuckler. There’s a lot to like on this team.

Ntndeacon: Weighted a bit too much on the dusty old side for my taste.

Sun Tzu: Similar to Sloan's team, I like what was started here but…

I like Barkeep49 as the longshot. Quality across the board. Scored huge with Akira Kurosawa, Rita Hayworth, and Ginger Rogers.

However, as the favorite, I gotta like Karim. Not only does Karim have quality across the board, but also consistency. Taking a look at some of the other teams, you say . . . "Could the Marx Brothers actually work with Steve McQueen" With Karim's team, you say "Man, I bet they could put out a REALLY good movie." I think that they have that overall 'gel' that is needed to score the victory here.

WSUCougar gets an honorable mention as well, putting together a stellar team. Look for him to challenge Karim for the victory. Clutch picks like Sellers and Monroe might push this team to victory.

If I had to rank the teams:

3. Barkeep49
2. WSUCougar
1. Karim

Bah! Bah I say! I still stand firmly behind my first pick of Stanley Kubrick. I think Bogart and Moore are both solid as well. I'm not as happy about how the rest of the team turned out though. Some of the categories I'll admit I knew very little about, so just picked from what little bit I read.

Looking over things though, I'm going to have to agree with the consensus here and say Karim has the nicest looking draft. Pretty strong all around. Some other folks have better picks, but all around his is solid.

I'd also like to give Shorty the award for most dumbfounding placement of picks in the draft. ;)

No M. Night Shalamylan? Or the Titanic Direction? Or Peter Jackson?

Karim and ntndeacon has the two best teams, in my opinion.

I think 3ric sells himself short here. I happen to agree that these two "teams" are among the strongest of the rest, but I might even be inclined to give the overall edge to 3ric.

ntndeacon has some outstanding picks, but they do skew to the early days of film, which makes them tough to compare with actors than more of us will have seen a lot.

Too bad we never got the rest from Sun Tzu, who had a pretty promising group there.

My award order would probably be:

3rd - Karim
2nd - ntndeacon
1st - 3ric

I think it's important to set up what criteria we are judging upon. I looked at the draft as getting the talent for the studio system. And I assume that we were tryng to market to the audience all-time.

I think the categories should be, judged vs. contemporaries and all-time:

Abitlity: What is this person's ability level in their chosen field?

Versatility: How versatile is this actor in other fields?

Box Office Power: How big a draw was this person over the course of their career?

Artistic Impact: Did this person have a lasting impact on the medium or society? How well recieved was this artist's work in their own time?

I think these are the four categories that are important. Taking Director, for example, I love Hitchcock movies. They obviously have a great impact on filmmaking today. They made a lot of money in his day. In his prime, Hitchcock was at the top of the list. But he pretty much only made thrillers. So i'd score him (on a scale of 1-10):

Ability: 8

Versatility: 3

Box Office: 9

Art: 8

I think a systematic judgement is better. We look at these people with 2004 glasses on. I noticed this when we did the first round. I took Bing Crosby, whom many people thought was a joke pick at first. But that's because musicals aren't well-recieved these days. Musicals were, by far, the strongest genre of movies prior to WWII. Bing was the biggest star. Historically he's one of the biggest stars in history. Translating it to our terms, Bing had the Box office power and critical acclaim that Jim Carrey has, but, at the same time, has had the success in music we only know from Michael Jackson. There has never been before or, likely, ever will be a multmedia film star of his caliber again.

I think we should have links to the descriptions from the thread, also. It wouldn't take to long to put each person's list in a single post.

Other than my own team, I like ntdeacon and 3ric's teams the best. But I still question the Katherine Hepburn (romance) selction.

Shorty loses points for picking Julia Roberts, but every other pick is very solid.

Comedy was the toughest category for me. There are few modern comedies that I've enjoyed. Probably the best comedian for me would have been Jack Benny but I've only listened to his old radio shows.

A better modern pick might have been Hugh Grant. Not particularly a comedian but good in light-hearted romance/comedies. I particularly liked Notting Hill even though I don't care for Julia Roberts.
