I'm coaching as Campbell, it's the 2017-2018 season, I'm mired in medocrity in the Atlantic Sun(a prestige 2 conference). Campbell has a prestige of 24.

In January 2018, I notice a high level recruit who has not been offered a scholarship by anyone else. I throw him a scholarship offer and a head coach visit sight-unseen (I have not evaluated this player or anything).

He immediately signs with me, in February 2018. This is the #9 player in the nation, #2 center. He's qualified academically.

Qualified: Yes
Committed to Campbell
Rankings: #9 Overall, #2 C, West Region #4 Overall, West Region #1 C
High School Awards: All-State, Mr. Basketball (Hawaii)
Top 5 Schools: Kansas, *Campbell, Xavier, Oklahoma, Stanford

Two questions:

1) Is there some weird circumstance here that occured such that no other school had offered this guy a scholarship yet?

2) Would it be possible that there is something 'wrong' with this guy that I can't see since I haven't evaluated him?

I can't imagine any real world situation where a top level recruit would not be targted by the top tier schools, much less a situation where a top level recruit who has qualified academically would ever sign with a program like Campbell.

Basically bringing this up to see if HR notices this as some sort of logic/AI flaw in the recruiting system.

Most likely he didn't qualify academically until late in the recruiting season (can't remember where the cut-off for this is). A lot of the good teams possibly signed guys who were ready to sign earlier in the process.

There is also a possibility that he isn't as good as he looks. How good is your scout and how good is the player's stats?

Regardless, it sounds like you got a steal.

Never seen that happen. Be very interesting to see what his stats and such are.

Does seem a little odd though, but seeing as how I've never seen it, and never heard of it. This might just be one of those one in a million things, which would be pretty cool.

Nothing special, and I *love* having 46% free throw shooters on my team.

Hopefully tonight I'll have enough time to progress forward and get his numbers from the evaluation I did after I landed him. I may also get into next season and get to his real numbers once he gets to Campbell.

If he just qualified, I would think he'd wait more than a month before committing to a prestige 2 school.

If he's signifigantly worse than his #9 standing, the recruiting services did a horrible job! That would not be a bad thing though necessarily, they shouldn't be perfect for sure. :)

He'll be a good player. I look for these guys every season, but it doesn't always work out. If they don't sign right away, other teams will jump in (and sometimes they do as soon as they qualify).

It doesn't happen a lot, but I wouldn't mind seeing it tightened up a little where someone like this ends up signing with whoever offers a scholarship first.

I find it more unrealistic that hawaii has a 5 star basketball player instate.

trust me, this never happens in real life.

4 star at best. mostly 2 and 3, as HS athletics in hawaii are a joke.

Being from Hawaii had something to do with it too. Very good foreign players and players from Hawaii/Alaska often go unrecruited by the top programs. Whenever I start with a team, I notice that it gets filled with quite a few foreigners pretty quickly, enough that I may implement a house rule about it.
