In the mailbox...
Kennedy Buchanan, our punter last year, was suspended for taking money from a booster. Kennedy's a walk-on, and we have a couple scholarship punters who should be able to handle the job.
Walk-on outside linebacker Rickey Benitez was suspended a year for academic reasons. He's seen some playing time in the past, something I wanted to limit this year anyway.

Our scout from the Great Lakes region retired, so we'll have to fill that spot.

Rivals.com listed us as #33 in recruiting last year. Clemson was #2, Duke #10, UNC #15. Wake Forest was right behind us at #34 - hmm. Hopefully, a another class like this will thoroughly entrench us in the #4 spot in the ACC, where we will begin the charge up the ladder.

We extend an offer to a new Great Lakes scout who's ability rests solely on the defensive side. It really shouldn't matter much, as we very rarely extend our recruiting operations to this region.

Schedule

We have our 2nd leg of the home and home with Princeton. This year we'll head to New Jersey for the game. Due to ACC scheduling, we already have 6 away games this year, so I'm going to look for a home game to balance us a little more. Our prestige us "up to" 70, so I think I'm going to tackle our next door neighbor, Navy. We've butted heads on the recruiting trail a number of times. Finally, I'm getting the team where I want them to be, and I think Navy could be a victim :).

The University of Maryland is proud to announce that their 2008 season schedule has been finalized and begins with a home game against cross-state rivals Navy. On the docket is a series of 5 home games featuring games against Virginia, Georgia Tech, North Carolina State and defending conference champion (and preseason #1), Clemson. Maryland also will be taking the field away from home a total of six time this season, including their last two games of the year at North Carolina and Duke.

Joseph Morton returns for his fourth and final year at the University of Maryland. Joseph had his best season by far last year and picked it up after taking a step back his sophomore season. We expect over 3000 yards in passing and an imporovement on his 23/15 TD to INT ratio. Backing him up is O.J. Hudgins, more of a scrambler than a true passer and heir apparent Ellis Cushman who will be facing competition for the starting job from prized recruit Shawn Davidson (after he redshirts this year). I think we have plenty of depth here for the future - the immediate present is what worries me.

Just like Joseph Morton, our starting running back Jake Kemp returns for his final year. Jake's rushing numbers have stayed remarkably consistent over his career here (902, 950 & 897 yards). I would normally expect some improvement over time, but he hasn't shown it on the ground. He has, however, improved his receiving ability (16, 30 and 41 catches) making himself into a multi-dimensional running back. Jamal Bracken was recruited at the exact same time as Jake Kemp and I kind of feel sorry for him. He certainly has had the talent to start here, but he's found himself basically playing the role or Kemp's caddie. He's only carried the ball 165 times for 859 yards over his career - I'm going to see if I can perhaps get him a few more carries this year. In the future, redshirt freshman Christian Callaghan looks like he'll be getting the duties, but that's mostly by default. Both he and redshirt Geoff Norris don't have the talent of Kemp or Bracken.

At fullback, we're admittedly average. Derek Marr returns to start, but only carried the ball 11 times last year (for a whopping 10 yards). Redshirt Kennedy Richardson will start next year and will be an upgrade over anyone here currently.

At tightend, senior Paul Contreras will be splitting time with true freshman Tyrus Matesky. I would love to redshirt Tyrus to max his potential, but I'm not going to get the opportunity to do so as our depth here is deplorable. Sophomore walk-on Fred Middleton is listed 3rd on the depth chart. I'm paying at this position because of my bad recruiting here.

Fortunately, our receiving corps is pretty good. Bert Malone returns after a dazzling freshman year where he caught 63 passes for 997 yards and 9 TDs. He starts along with Phil Fisher (22 catches, 311 yds, 3 TDs) who is consistent if not spectacular. Backing them up are Howie Mott and R.J. Kemp - they purely provide depth. Recruit Fernando Angell will redshirt and judging how he's done in spring camp could be a pleasant surprise at this position.

At center, Richard Borders returns for his final season. He was a backup until last year and his unspectacular results as a start show why. He only had a 28.3% block percentage, and I'd like to see him improve at least 10 percentage points there. Backing him up are Barry Compton and redshirt Glen Tyree. Neither of these guys was a top recruit, so we're going to have to make center a priority in recruiting.

Guard Daryl Kirtsey comes back and will provide leadership across the entire line. This guy is our leader and is a two-time 2nd team All-ACC. I think he'll be first team this year. Daryl was a surprise, as he was only a top 600 recruit. At the other guard spot, Devin Ruddy will probably get the call, but also face competition from Lamont Kolodzik. I can't seem to get a gauge on Devin -- some of my coaches say that the sky's the limit for this guy, while others say he's destined to be yet another average offensive guard. He had an "ok" year last year starting as a true freshman. It should be interesting to see if he pans out. Just like our centers, we have zilcho depth at this position. Interior offensive line will be huge a priority this recruiting season.

At tackle, we have an embarassment of riches. Rusty Gargaro returns to start for his 4th consecutive year. He gave up a number of sacks last year (9) and that will cause some concern. Rick Roberson has waited patiently for 3 years and will finally get the call to start in his final year. Did I say embarassment of riches? Ok, maybe I overstated a little - the starters are a little suspect, but we have a lot of depth at backup (something that can't be said for the rest of the offensive line). Corey Lucas, Arnie Winfield, Brady Hesse and Ricky Donahue all will be able to fill-in admirably if something should happen to Rick or Rusty.

Starter Grady Monroe returns at defensive end. He has over 30 sacks in his three years as starter and should give passing attacks fits again this year. On the other side, Reuben Wooden finally gets a shot to start. He finally saw some real action last year and raised some eyebrows by conributing 6.5 sacks as a backup. Brenden Drake and Dana Hines will provide depth until next year when they should both be starting for us.

At tackle, Eugene McCormick returns for his 3rd year as starter. He's another guy that some say could be an All-American. He was one of our top recruits 3 years ago - I'm hoping he fulfills the potential we saw when we signed him.

Well, we finally lose the services of our All-American linebacker Cris Matthews, so who's going to step it up? This will be Perry Clouse's 4th year as a starter, so he can be looked to for leadership. Bryant Phillips returns as well and has been a stalwart on the inside. On the outside, 2006 All-Freshman Ted Turner looks to improve on his 3 sack, 8 TFL performance. We're thin on the outside, so we'll probably pair Ted with either true soph Bert Shepherd or true freshman Norbert Masiona. I'd like to recruit a couple OLBs this year.

The secondary is definitely a big strength of this team. Redshirt junior cornerback Lee Harper can just flat out play. He had 4 int and allowed only 16 catches on his watch last year for a 21.1 PDPct. On the other side, 2nd Team ACC Casey Mansfield was even more impressive - 3 interceptions, with 13 caught passes and 11 passes defended (22.0 PDPct). Fortunately for us, we will have both these guys returning next year :). At safety, Clyde Lowe and Wesley Boyer return to their starting jobs - both has PDPcts > 20. High School All-American J.J. Soper will redshirt this year, but we can't wait to get him on the playing field :).

PK Lamar Meynardie is the man here. He's a combine 37 for 47 on FGs in his career and is ably backed up by recruit Gerald Hutchins (who will redshirt). We've never really been satisfied with our punting situation, so Arnie Woods will face challenges from both Ron Smedley and Robbie Willis this year.

Before we hit the actual recruiting trail, I like to check out the homestate to see what the prospects are like, as well as checking to see if any recruits idolize us. Checking the state, we see 3 recruits idolize Navy - 0 idolize us. :mad: I will be certain to note that when we face Navy head-to-head this week.

In-state, there's a fine Top 100 prospect at OLB - a desperate need for us. Unfortunately for us, he wants academics and prestige, which aren't exactly strong points for us. We'll go about him aggressively, but this really sounds like the type of guy who will string us a long and land at Clemson (like our in-state QB last year). On the plus side, #107 ranked prospect George Lemery, a center (another desperate need) is strongly leaning towards staying close to home. We NEED to bag this guy. Another OLB (ranked #339 in the country), Scott Watkins, wants to stay close to home as well - he will be another target. Overall, it's not a spectacular year for the state of Maryland. That's ok.

By the way, the latest line lists us as 7 point favorites against the Midshipmen. The game will be telelvised locally.

Teams have never met

This is a huge game for us as it not only starts our year, but will also effect us on the recruiting trail. We desperately need to knock Navy out of the picture locally to help wrap up the area recruits. All a part of the process in developing a national power - proving it on the field today will help tremendously.

The Game
38,800 Maryland fans show up for the game against Navy. I'm disappointed - I would have like to see at least 40,000 for this game. Maybe because it's raining outside - yeah, that's it.

We win the toss and elect to receive. Navy's Dancy kicks it to our 5 yard line and senior Deron Meyer returns it 21 yards to our 26, where we begin our first drive. We begin 2008 by calling a run by Jake Kemp to the left side. He runs off guard for 3 yards. We're going to try and mix up the rushing attack this year, so we make the call for Jamal Bracken to run a trap, and he's stopped behind the line or scrimmage for a 3 yard loss. Hmmm...not the way I wanted to begin the year. On 3rd and 10, Morton fades back and is sacked for a 7 yard loss. Ugh. Can we call do-over?

Navy starts their drive at their 34 yard line. Now it's time for our defense to step up until our offense can correct itself. Navy calls an option play and it's stuffed when our cornerback, Casey Mansfield, reads the play and drops Navy for a one yard loss. Our secondary is definitely a strength this year :). 2nd and 11 Navy attempts a pass taht falls incomplete as Eugene McCormick hurries the pass. That's a good sign for Eugene. 3rd and 11 and Navy completes a 16 yard pass - sigh. This sets off a chain of events leading to a 58 yard, 9 play TD drive by Navy. I fold my arms and listen to my offensive coordinator in the headphones.

We start our next drive at our own 16 yard line when Deron Meyer decides to return the ball 7 yards deep in the end zone :rolleyes: . Jake Kemp gets the call again on first down and responds behind a devastating block by Daryl Kirtsey. 11 yards, and MD has their first first down of the year! yay! 3 pass plays later (1 incomplete and 2 completes that net 0 yards) we have to punt again. Navy begins their drive at their own 38.

4 plays and 62 yards later, Navy scores another TD on a 44 yard run around left end. I am severely disappointed. Navy, 14-0 - 4:41 left in the first.

We start on our 18 yard line. Hopefully we can improve on our absolutely dismal performance on both sides of the ball. Jamal Bracken runs a counter behind Daryl Kirtsey and he gains 18 yards! On 1st and 10, Joseph Morton underthrows our fullback, Lester Collier. We haven't done a thing in the air so far :(. Kemp gets 3 yards on the carry, setting up a 3rd and 7. A false start on the next play doesn't help, making it 3rd and 12 :mad: I send a new play in, and with it, we may have turned the season around. I call for Morton to take it himself around the left end (see a pattern here?). He does, finds an opening and goes untouched for a 66 yard TD RUN!!! Just like that, we are back in the game! Navy 14, Maryland 7 - 2:41 left in the 1st.

Navy starts at their 13. 3 plays later we stop them and get the ball back at our 44.

Finally...we get the passing game going with a couple short completions. We mix it up with a couple runs on the ground as well. Next, Howie Mott is found open in the end zone on a 44-yard pass play, and we are tied, 14-14, 12:40 left in the half!

A touchback on the ensuing kickoff forces Navy to begin at their 20. We get another 3 and out, and begin at our own 36.

Our drive stalls at the Navy 47, and the Midshipmen have the ball at their own 9 with 7:50 left.

8 plays and 90 yard later (11 yard TD run), Navy takes a 21-14 lead. We've given up 246 yards in total offense :(.

With 4:26 left, we begin at our 20. An option to Kemp yields 3 yards and Morton is stopped for no gain on a 2nd down draw. 3rd and 7 and Morton is hurried into an incomplete pass. Navy gets the ball back at their 45 with 2:59 left - plenty of time.

Fortunately, for us, they turn the ball over on downs at our 30 yard line. 1:27 left...maybe time for a last gasp before the half. A sack, a false start, a 2 yard run and a one yard loss - what a great 2 minute offense! 15 seconds left, and we need to punt it again.

Halftime: Navy 21, Maryland 14

We've given up 278 yards in total offense and managed only 169 of our own. Did I vastly overrate my own team?!

Neither team can muster any offense for the first 5 minutes of the second half. Then, throwing from his own 11 yard line, Joseph Morton makes a crucial mistake throwing his first interception of the year. The Navy cornerback runs it all the way back, extending Navy's lead to 14. :mad:

The third quarter ends with Navy leading, 28-14. Maryland has the ball at their own 45 yard line. Our defense really responded, giving up 14 total yards in the quarter. Our offense managed 57 of their own, but the interception was the play that killed us.

Our drive stalled, and Navy moved the ball a bit on the ground on their drive, therefore eating up some clock. We have the ball at our own 10 with 9:39 left.

A holding call, and another interception. ARGH.

Fortunately, we stop them again in our territory. We trade possessions, and have the ball at our 45 with 4:30 left. Time ticking away....

Morton's 3rd interception of the day ends it for us, and Navy runs out the clock. Altogether a VERY disappointing loss.

Our offense was awful. I'm really not sure if Navy was just that good, or if we were that bad. Either way, I'm not sure where this leaves us for the year. I had really high hopes for this season, and they seem dashed in week 1. :(

I don't get it - I reward Jamal Bracken with more carries, and he gets stuff 5 out of 6 times? Morton completes 11 passes and throws 3 interceptions!? Bert Malone catches one pass ALL DAY? The left side of our offensive line was 5 for 16 on run blocks - that's about what I would expect. However, the right side (an admitted weakness) was 0 for 9. These guys HAVE to step up if we're going to compete for ANYTHING this year.

Princeton was beaten pretty soundly by New Mexico in week 1, 55-27. However, Princeton's Lamar Legins gained 163 yards on only 12 carries so they have a pretty good running game. Defensively, they were a mess. I'm hoping our offense can take adavantage of that and parlay success here into success the rest of the season. I'm also hoping that the 1 point differential on the Vegas line is an extreme understatement. We shall see.

Our offense performed well here (506 yards in total offense), but again our defense didn't show. 162 yards on the ground and 262 yards in the air isn't going to cut it defensively.

Individually, Jake Kemp had a great game (145 yards, 23 carries & 3 TDs). Joseph Morton rebounded from his horrid performance in week 1 with 3 TD passes and our offensive line went 12/34 on run blocks - not bad. However, the competion isn't what we'll be facing later. Maybe this game will go donw as a confidence builder.

Last year, we finally defeated West Virginia, but the game was at home. This year's edition of the Mountaineers is 0-2 - they lost at Texas and Ohio. So far, their defense has proven to be extremely porous, but then again so has ours. Really not sure what to expect here, but I'll take a win any way I can get it.

We do it again offensively (534 total yards), and our offense manages to not give up the big play. Jake Kemp and Joseph Morton again shine, but a breakout performance by Bert Malone really helps out. Up until this game he had been MIA. Our offensive line is 15-31 on run blocks, led by Richard Borders 6 for 8 day. Defensively, nickel back Andy Brannan gets two picks. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to get to the quarterback much this year (3 sacks in 3 games) - Grady Monroe on has half a sack. We will definitely need to improve on this.

Virginia runs a Power-I and can come at you from multiple angles via the rushing attack. Junior Warren Swann leads the team in rushing with 74.5 yards per game. He's backed up by Sherman Clayton (57.5 yards per game). What makes the team especially difficult is senior quarterback Marcus Watkins, who not only completes 60% of his passes (4 TDs, 1 Int) but also has contributed 60.5 yards per game rushing. Virginia is 7th in the nation in scoring (42.5 points per game). What separates this team from previous Virginia teams is their defense. UVA is 5th in the country in rushing defense and 42nd in passing. All told, they are on the rise and will be a significant foe.

The Game

Virginia gets the ball first, and we force them to a 3 and out. Unfortunately, we fumble the punt, and UVA has it at the 50. On a 3rd and long, they somehow complete a 48 yard touchdown pass. I don't get it - we've been getting killed by the big play all year :( 10:41 left in the 1st.

On the ensuring kickoff, we're aided by a nice return and start our drive close to midfield. We steadily move the ball, and our drive ends with a 5 yard TD run by Jamal Bracken to tie it up. 7-7, 5:11 left in the 1st.

Virginia 7, Maryland 7, end of 1st quarter

A conversion on 3rd and 19, and defensive holding and defensive pass interference penalites enable UVA to go ahead 14-7 with 8:47 left in the half :(

We start our drive on our own 4, and we're stopped on our own 37. VA ball at their own 38.

We stop them and get the ball at our 41. Unfortunately, we can't do a thing and promptly give the ball back.

No one is able to sustain anything, and the game goes to the half with Virginia leading, 14-7.

Virginia has 184 total yards, we have 136.

We start the second half on our own 18. We move the ball a bit, but need to punt. A 43 yard pass on Virginia's next drive sets up a 43 yard FG, so UVA takes a 17-7 lead.

We move the ball 18 plays, 90 yards, 8:35 on the clock on the next drive, and we cut the lead to 3 with 22 seconds left in the 3rd.

3rd quarter yardage: Virginia 44, Maryland 116

Down 3 with 5:30 left, Maryland punts from their own 47. 33 yard punt and the punt returner fumbles the ball! Phil Fisher jumps on it, and MD has the ball, 1st and 10 at the Virginia 11 with 5:22 left! 3 plays later, Morton finds Jake Kemp in the end zone for a 3 yard TD pass, giving Maryland the 21 to 17 lead! 4:12 left in the game.

Maryland kicks off, and Virginia has it at their own 25, 4:06 left. Virginia runs the ball, and gains 9 yards - 3:36 left. 2nd and 1, and they get the 2 yards they need for the 1st down. 1st and 10 from their own 36 - 3:13 left. Another run up the middle, this one good for 5 yards - 2:31 left. Another run - stopped for no gain. 3rd and 5 at their own 41 - 2:13 left. Virginia has ALL their timeouts available. Another run - this time we stop them for a 2 yard loss (thank you, Grady Monroe!). 4th and 7 at their own 39 - 1:54 left. This is it, folks!

Pass...complete...17 yard gain. NOOOOO! 1st and 10 at our 44 - 1:37 left.

1st and 10 - Watkins fades back again....INTERCEPTED by Clyde Lowe at the Maryland 2, returned for 14 yards! 1:30 left!

Wake Forest enters the game with a pretty bad offense (#69 rushing, #103 passing). However, they have the 22nd best rushing defense, #15 passing defense, and our 4th in scoring defense, giving up 8 points per game. Meanwhile, we're 12th in rushing and 34th in passing. We're 39th in scoring, so it shows we haven't really been efficient. On the other side of the ball, we haven't proven we can stop the run or the pass. Should be interesting - sigh.

After the upset loss (in our eyes, anyway) last week to WF, we immediately find ourselves behind the 8-ball when it comes to the playoffs. Did we completely overvalue ourselves? We shall see.

Georgia Tech enters the game at 1-3, but they've played #1 Wisconsin (24-7 loss) and #4 Clemson (17-7 loss). Both of those games they played very tough and obviously were not blown out against some upper echelon competition. However, they also somehow lost to #67 N.C. State, 48-6. Go figure. Their rushing attack is pitiful out of their pro formation while their passing attack is just adequate. Defensively they've been ok, let by ACC-2nd Team DE Al Marsh (4 sacks in 4 games). Offensively, we're pretty good in every category except the all important one - scoring. Defensively we've been pretty good, except we continue to give up the big pass play. Odd, as the secondary was a strong point coming into the season. Jake Kemp has scored 7 TDs in 5 games for us. Defensively, we've only been able to get to the QB 4 times in 5 games :(.

Offensively, we have a HUGE game. Joseph Morton goes nuts throwing to Bert Malone, and Jake Kemp scores 2 more TDs, giving him 9 for the year. Only one sack for us today (Grady Monroe), giving us 5 in 6 games. Awful. Lee Harper, our CB extraordinaire, had 2 interceptions and a kick off return of 86 yards.

Well, of course the offense finally gets rolling last week and now we lose our starting quarterback. It's a battle of less than accomplished backups. Redshirt junior O.J. Hudgins hasn't thrown a pass in a game yet. He's excellent at scrambling and 3rd down passing (if that's an ability). Depending on our RB status next year, I may move him to RB. Ellis Cushman is a true pocket passer, and will probably be the least likely of the three to throw an interception. He's thrown one pass in his career, a 10 yard completion. Finally, we have Thurman Weathers. Again, absolutely no game experience, and another guy who likes to scramble. I think I'm going to have to with the youngest guy who has the most upside: Ellis Cushman.

Florida State embraces run and shoot to the extreme - they have the 8th best passing attack in the country and 120th best rushing offense. They should really enjoy our "prone to the big play" defense :(. Defensively, they're average with a tendency of their own to get burnt long. I don't think that will be a problem today :(. Fortunately for us, their #1 QB is out getting his knee scoped. However perma-backup senior QB Rusty Newman has filled in adequately the game and a half he's played (60.2%, 4 TDs, 1 Int). Like us, FSU has a problem getting to the quarterback - we're last in the ACC in this category, they're second to last.

In a dramatic twist, as we're heading into the tunnel, Joseph Morton informs me that if I need him he's ready to go. I bite my lip and think about the implications. If I start him, he could be hurt worse, jeopardizing our entire season. If I don't start him and we lose, the season is shot as far as the playoffs are concerned (which is a long shot anyway). Finally, I hand Joseph the ball and inform Ellis that he's going to have to wait another day.

What a show Joseph puts on! 4 TD passes, 3 to Bert Malone! Jake Kemp is held without a touchdown, but puts in a very solid 118 yard day. Our defense picks off 5 passes and collects 4 sacks to hold FSU to 208 yards total offense. I realize FSU isn't in the top tier of the ACC, but this is very satisfying.

After the game I check with our trainer - Joseph Morton will still be listed as doubtful for next week, but his pulled groin hasn't gotten any worse. Phew!

N.C. State was 3-8 last year and are well on their way to repeating that record. They're a run and shoot team and are 8th in the country in passing. You can completely disregard the rushing attack (331 total yards, 123rd in the country) and concentrate on a nickel or dime defense against them. At QB, Corey Jasper is a redshirt junior and has over 2000 yards passing, along with 17 TDs and 16 int (50-38 for his career). He's still learning, but he should possibly make N.C. State a player next year or the year after. Defensively, N.C. State gives up 34 points a game and are particularly weak against the run. It's really hard to judge this team - they slaughtered Georgia Tech, 48-6, and lost to Virginia 36-33. Then again, they have lost big to mediocre teams. We expect to win big here, but will not take them lightly, especially with Morton playing with an "iffy" groin. This will be our last "easy" game. After this we play at home to Clemson and then away at North Carolina and Duke. Welcome to the buzzsaw.

Jake Kemp does very well, but "Mr. Erratic" Joseph Morton throws 4 picks to keep N.C. State in it. Defensively, our anemic rushing attack contributes 0 sacks (and 2 hurries) and is saved by our 11 passes defended. Casey Mansfield defends 3 passes and also picks a pass off, returning it for an 85 yard TD. He and Jake Kemp are my personal players of the game, along with Eugene McCormick (DT) who contributed 7 tackles, 4 of them for a loss.

Clemson enters the game coming off a huge upset loss to Wake Forest. This doesn't bode well. This will be, by far, the biggest game we've played in my career. Gulp.

Clemson runs a wishbone and has been struggling offensively a bit this year. They are again led by soph RB Monty Fox, who is only averaging 3.3 ypc this year. Last year he was averaging a full yard more per carry. Randall Rowell starts at QB - he's a redshirt senior making his first starts this year. He was a very sought after recruit and has completed 61.9% of his passes for 10 TDs and 5 Ints. Erik Jones, our prized Maryland recruit (whom we eventually lost to Clemson) is redshirting this year.

Clemson has always excelled defensively, and this year is no exception. Clemson is first in the country in rushing defense and 28th in passing. I fully expect our rushing attack to go nowhere, so Joseph Morton will have to direct our offense. Will this be the 4 TD Joseph Morton, or the 4 interception edition? Unfortunately for us, Korey Castagnola, the two-time all-ACC DE returns for his final year. He has 12 of Clemson's 26.5 sacks and just dominated us last year. I don't look forward to seeing him again.

Special note: Clemson's entire offensive line are Top 100 recruits. 3/5ths were named to the all-ACC team last year. :(

The Game
Clemson wins the toss and elects to receive. Lamar Meynardie kicks off 7 yards deep in the end zone, and Clemson elects to run it out. They are stopped at their own 12. 1st and 10.

46,000 people (ALMOST a sell-out - good grief, what do we have to do?) see Monty Fox stopped for no gain. On 2nd and 10, a reverse is called and that nets Clemson 3 yards. 3rd and 7 - Fox gets the call and gets 5 yards. Maryland stops Clemson on their first drive! 33 yard punt, negative 2 yard return, and MD starts on their own 45.

Kemp runs around the left end for 6 yards on first down. That's a good precedent :). Clemson's starting with an 8-man front, obviously "daring" Morton to pass. Hmmm.... on 2nd and 4 Kemp gets the call again...this time for only a yard, setting up a 3rd and 3. Morton fades back and throws....intercepted and run back 60 yards for the TD. Oh cripes. The 4 interception Joseph Morton has shown up today. :( Clemson 7, Maryland 0

Touchback on the kickoff. So much for good field position. After a 5-yard illegal shirt penalty, we go right back to the passing game. Morton finds Howie Mott for a 4 yard completion. Not much, but it hopefully gives Joseph some confidence. 2nd and 11, and we catch a break as Clemson is offsides, setting up a 2nd and 6. Kemp runs off tackle and is stopped by Castagnola (hate that guy) for no gain. 3rd and long -- Morton finds Bert Malone open for a 7 yard completion and a first down! 1st and 10 at the 31. Morton fades back again against the 8-man front and finds Howie Mott for 7 yards. A pass to Kemp is incomplete, setting up a 3rd and 3. This time, Morton takes it himself after finding a seam and runs for a 10 yard gain! 1st and 10 at our own 48. A pass to the TE Contreras is incomplete, and an Unsportsmanlike Conduct on us puts us deep in the hole - 2nd and 25 at our own 33. Incomplete to Fisher - 3rd and 25. On 3rd and long Joseph can't find anyone and loses 6 yards on the sack. 4th and 31 - we need to punt. 26 yard punt - fair catch - Clemson has it at their own 47. Hmmm...

1st and 10 - and we're called for an Illegal Contact with the Receiver for 10 yards. 1st and 10 at our 43. Monty Fox gets 6 yards, setting up a 2nd and short. Dang. 1st and 10 at our 25. 5 yard run by Shannon - it seems Clemson is mixing it up here as far as who gets their carries. Maryland offsides. Good grief, can we have some discipline, people?! Clemson can't get their next play off on time - 1st and 15 from our 20. Good Lord - holding on Maryland. 1st and 5 at our 10. I pull out a clump of hair. Shannon runs a trap and is stopped cold for a 3 yard loss by Eugene McCormick. 2nd and 8 - Fox runs offtackle for 9 yards and collects the first down. 1st and goal at our 4. Fox is stopped after 2 yards by McCormick. Shannon runs up the middle, gets the 2 yards and the TD. Clemson 14, Maryland 0 - 2:57 left in the 1st. :(

Touchback - we have it at our 20. Morton throws a first down pass that is dropped by Bert Malone. We can't afford dropped passes :mad: Kemp runs up the middle for 4 yards - 3rd and 6 at our 24. Morton throws a screen to Kemp, but he's stopped 4 yards short of the first down. We have to punt. 24 yard punt, 21 yard return :(

Clemson has it 1st and 10 at our 29. Fox runs for a 7 yard gain. Boyer and Phillips stop the next play for no gain, bringing up 3rd and 3 at our 22. Rowell finds his man on an 8 yard pass play, giving Clemson a first down at our 14. Rowell takes it again and finds Norris open for a 14 yard TD - Clemson 21, Maryland 0, 14 seconds left in the 1st.

Another touchback. Morton scrambles for 10 yards on the next play, and that ends the first quarter. We're getting killed :(. Clemson has 70 total yards, we have 45.

1st and 10 and the pass by Morton is blocked at the line of scrimmage. An intentional grounding call on the next play gives us a 3rd and 23 at our own 17. Why are we getting all these penalties?! Morton finds Mott open for 15 yards, but that's still 8 yards short, giving us yet another punt situation. Net punt of 21 yards :mad: Clemson has it at their own 47.

Rowell takes it himself for a 2 yard gain on 1st down. He then completes a pass to Finch for 8 yards and a first down at the Maryland 43. Monty Fox runs off tackle for an 11 yard gain to the MD 32. Finally, something good happens for us as Dana hines crashes the party by picking up a big 9 yard sack on 1st and 10. 2nd and 19 at the MD 42....incomplete pass. 3rd and 19....Rowell finds Abrams for 18 yards, to the MD 24. 4th and 1 at our 23...you know they'll go for it....They don;t :o - but do kick a 40 yard FG - Clemson 24, Maryland 0 - 11:08 in the half. The national audience is watching a laugher.

9 yards deep in the end zone, Lee Harper tries to make something happen. Might as well, right? He gets 34 yards, starting MD at their own 25 for this drive. Morton throws to Howie Mott on 1st down and it's dropped. Morton fades back on a play-action and throws up top...into the hands of Bert Malone at the 46. Bert takes it, jigs a little, and gets an additional 16 yards to the Clemson 30 yard line! The crowd perks up a little as they are desperate to cheer for anything. On the very next play, Malone fades back and throws a strike to Phil Fisher for a 30 yard TD!!! The crowd goes wild! Clemson 24, Maryland 7 - 9:57 left in the half.

We kickoff, and, of course, they return the ball to our 48 yard line. :rolleyes: Rowell fades back and finds Abrams open for a 17 yard pass - and Clemson has it at our 31 yard line. Sigh. Monty Fox gets a yard on the next play - 2nd and 9. Finch runs a trap up the middle and breaks it down to our 5 yard line. ARGH. 2 plays later, they're in the end zone - Clemson 31, Maryland 7 - 7:08 left.

Touchback for us. Pass to Howie Mott is incomplete - 2nd and 10. Castagnola hurries Morton into a bad throw - incomplete. 3rd and 10 - Incomplete again - we need to punt. 35 yard punt - fair catch at the Clemson 45.

Fox runs for 7 yards. Shannon gains a yard, but then Clemson gets called for unnecessary roughness, bringing up 3rd and 17 at their own 38. The 3rd down pass is underthrown, and we will get the ball back. Punted and returned - 1st and 10 at our own 41.

Morton finds Phil Fisher open and gets it to him for a 17 yard gain. 1st and 10 at the Clemson 42. Pass to Jake Kemp falls incomplete. Kemp gets the ball on the next play - despite the nickel defense it only gains 2 yards. 3rd and 8 - delay of game and then an incomplete pass. 4th and 13 at the Clemson 45 with 4:24 left. 62 yd FG (?!) attempt is no good.

Clemson starts at their own 45, and they look to close out this game by scoring again. Monty Fox gains 15 on first down. Sigh...a 7 play, 55 yard drive is capped by a 6 yard TD pass to Shannon - Clemson 38, Maryland 7 - 1:17 left.

On our ensuing drive, Morton throws a pick and Clemson drives to our 1 yard line with 11 seconds left. They line up for the FG, and Lee Harper blocks it (!). It's the small victories that matter :rolleyes:

They get a first down, but then are intercepted at our own 36 by Clyde Lowe. 11:55 left in the 3rd.

So, we lost our starting senior running back and his senior backup all in the same week. This season is quickly unraveling. True freshman Christian Callahan is the likely starter this week at RB.

We come into this game with a dinged-up quarterback and absolutely no runningbacks. That's what a lack of depth will get you, I suppose. We lose 8 starters on offense this year (yuck), and 3 from our defense (which should be pretty good next year - though we only have 12 sacks this year :mad: ). I'm concerned about the offense, however. Was this our best shot at improvement, and are we now destined to fall? Was this our last hurrah, before we even got a chance to "hurrah"?

Last year, Morton threw for 2919 yards, 23 TDs and 15 Ints. We were looking for him to continue to progress this year, but for some reason he did not. Although he limited his sacks to 19 this year (from 24 the previous year), he was worse in every other statistical category.

The duo of Jake Kemp and Jamal Bracken at the University of Marlyand has officially ended. Both were hailed as top recruits coming in, but only Jake Kemp fulfilled any of his potential. Disappointingly, Jake was looking for his first 1000 yard rushing season, but was injured in his next-to-last game and ended up 56 yards short of his goal. Jamal, who played behind Jake his entire career, was injured in that next to final game as well, so he was unable to start for the first time in his career. That says it all for Jamal's career. Overall, Jake Kemp gained 3693 yards rushing with 24 TDs over 43 career starts. He also tacked on 1016 receiving yards on 106 catches with 7 TDs. Jamal gained 1048 yards over his career (7 rushing TDs), and 365 yards receiving (3 TDs). There will be a big hole here next year.

Since Joseph Morton didn't excel like we expected, it's safe to assume the receiving corps did not either. Bert Malone was our top threat again, but he was unable to equal his numbers from his freshman year. Phil Fisher ended his Maryland career with 1445 yards on 100 catches with 12 TDs. Paul Contreras finally got to start his final year at TE. Next year's starter alongside Bert Malone will either be R. J. Kemp, Howie Mott, or darkhorse candidate Kris Esposito.

On the defensive side, Perry Clouse continued to improve and ended up leading the team in tackles. The rest of the linebacking crew was solid, if unspectacular. Our real disappointment rested in our defensive line. Eugene McCormick, our stud DT, continues to improve on his run stoppage (4 TFL last year, 15 this year), but he registered only one sack (giving him 2 for his career). I realize DT isn't the high-flying sack position, but we do need some kind of pass rush from up the middle. On the end, Grady Monroe had a disappointing 4.5 sacks (down from 14 his sophomore year, and 10 his junior year). In 2006, he was all 2nd Team ACC, but never improved :(. The other side of the line was anchored by career backup Reuben Wooden, who chipped in 3 sacks playing every down (in limited action the year before, he contributed 6 sacks). I am extremely excited about my secondary, and look forward to having all 4 contributors back next year (despite sophomore Lee Harpers hip condition - he's probably the best of the bunch - if he can't come back, my "extreme excitement" will fizzle like a wet potato).
