I am the 2nd team here...

Waterloo FC
Player rating and Team formation
Team Attitude: (Hidden)
Tactic: Normal
Tactic skill: (Unlimited)

Midfield: brilliant
Right Side Defence: outstanding
Central Defence: formidable
Left Side Defence: excellent
Right Side Attack: supernatural
Central Attack: brilliant
Left Side Attack: solid

Intercourse Ball Kickers
Player rating and Team formation
Team Attitude: Normal
Tactic: Counter-attacks
Tactic skill: solid

Midfield: passable
Right Side Defence: excellent
Central Defence: magnificent
Left Side Defence: extra-terrestrial
Right Side Attack: solid
Central Attack: supernatural
Left Side Attack: solid

My defense beat their offense (exc vs. solid, mag vs. brilliant, ET vs. SN), I have an offense that beat their defense, AND I had a solid counter-attacking skill. How in blazes do I lose 4-0?

I hate this stupid game sometimes. I never get a break.

I lost 3-2 if it makes you feel any better.

No.. it doesn't. Your game was still close... and at least you scored some goals. I'm already down 4 supporters on the season and am gonna lose probably 7 more next update because supporters will be pissed after getting shut out.

Edited for bad grammar.

The other teams brilliant midfield over your passable, could be a reason why.

This from HT:

Counter-attacks
When your opponent fails to score on an attack, you get a chance to make a counter-attack. Only one of the teams can use this benefit - namely the team that is not dominating the midfield. If you dominate the midfield, then you will just suffer the disadvantage (see below) of this tactic.

On the other hand, this tactic can be very useful if you have a strong defense and a good attack but your midfield is bad, especially if your opponent have the opposite situation (good midfield and ineffective attack is a sure way to give your opponent a lot of missed chances to counter-attack on)

The disadvantage of this tactic is that you lose 10% of your midfield capacity.

Your ability to counter-attack (assuming you are the non-dominant on the midfield, as described above) depends on the total sum of Defender skill and Passing skill among the defenders of your team. Strictly defenders count, so if you play 5-4-1, you will have the defender and passing skills of 5 of your players summing up to your counter-attack ability.

Passing skill is twice as important as defender skill when calculating your counter-attack ability!

When calculating this "counter-attack skill", experience bonus is added for each involved player, just as normal.

If you manage to make a counter-attack, it is reported as either a missed chance or a goal.

I don't understand what you're getting at. The purpose of a CA is to have a worse midfield while having a good defense and good attack.

Their possession was 66/64. Yes, this is a rather high number, but it really isn't that bad for counter attacking purposes. The fact remains that my defense, on all 3 sides, was better than their offense... AND I had a supernatural center attack vs. their formidable central defense.

The worst part is that I had NO scoring chances all match. You'd figure a solid counter attack whose defense is better than the opponent's offense would generate at least ONE opportunity.

Edited to point out the following sentence from the above post:

On the other hand, this tactic can be very useful if you have a strong defense and a good attack but your midfield is bad

HT is a funny game sometimes, never understand what it's going to do.
Better ratings, but still lose the game, baffling.

Hey, you get home field advantage next time don't you?

I lost 7-1 in a match that was tied 1-1 through 80 minutes.

I should calm down tomorrow. I understand the concept of bad luck ;)

The game is just so frustrating sometimes. I have lost my series two seasons in a row due to bad form and just rotten luck. I don't post about my frustrations very often and I was rather ticked by the margin of victory here. I hope Waterloo gets the hell out of my series.

...which reminds me of one more reason why this match ticked me off. The team that I played shouldn't BE in my series. They finished 5th in a tough III series and threw their qualification match just to drop to my series. I had a good chance of winning and promoting this season too, but this jackass ruins it for me.

I'm sorry YoSoySean
But a) he killed you in midfield and b) his attack generally beat yours, too.

And as we have all learned (at least I have), defense just doesn't mean as much as midfield and attack do.

Sorry dude, still sux. :(

I'm not going to repeat anything I said up there, but I think you greatly underestimate defense (it was just bad luck in this game).

I forgot one more thing. This is the first time my opponent EVER ran a 3-4-3 (unless they did so early last season or in a season prior to that) and they suffered no confusion at all.

Could be he had enough experienced players. Don't know. I usually get some confusion if I go to a new formation.

Maybe you should have scored a goal YoSoy...but with his midfield and attack, it doesn't surprise me how he did.

I do not think that is possible in Hattrick. :p

YoYo, I feel your pain, but. . .defense is largerly discounted for a very good reason. It doesn't help you win, it's just makes you loose by less.

Look at Lytic's teams. Defense, absolutely phenominal defense, completely geared to CA, and he looses, consistantly.

Look at that guy with all Divine defensive ratings who still sits in V(maybe he moved up to IV last season).

Nothing beats a superior midfield but luck combined with some attack.

I don't think this is bad luck at all. Counter-attack works well if the midfield advantage isn't too steep. Brilliant to passable is very steep. Combine that with the fact you were only solid at counter-attack (not really that good) and you are really going to get many chances

yeah.. lytic is magnificent at CA and only got 2 chances, converting 1
