Football Formation Questions

I am doing research in which I need information on football formations, both on offensive and defensive sides of the ball. If you look around, it should not be hard to figure out why. What I need is the advantages/disadvantages for each formation. Obviously I have a good start, but I am trying to cover all bases. If your posting defense, please just dont put 4-3 or whatever. Give information on what makes that 4-3 unique from others and what kind of players you need to do well with it. That also applies to all formations.

The 3-4 defense tries to use 3 big down lineman to clog up as many blockers as possible, making it easier for any additional players (genarally a linebacker) free to provide the pass rush. While most defensive tackles could probably play in either a 3-4 or 4-3, their is a world of difference with defensive ends.

While Jason Taylor or Jevon Kearse can rack up the sacks in a 4-3 defense, rushing the edge - they would get absolutely eaten alive in a 3-4. A 3-4 end lines up typically between the tackle and guard, and frequently will be double-teamed. These small speed guys just aren't built for that sort of scheme.

Is that why computer teams that run the 3-4 have DE's that are like 240 lbs? :D

If you can find a copy of it I would recommend "The Football Playbook" by Sam DeLuca. It's older(1972) but he does a good job of decribing all sorts of formations from the dawn of football until the early 70's. He goes over the pros and cons of each formation, why it was used and what trend caused it to be scrapped. Other nice things like describing qualities needed to play different positions and game planning.
