Recently, the bus drivers here decided to go on strike. The news reported that cars were being stopped, this weekend, by bums wanting rides to the liquor stores early in the morning. Very funny indeed. The sales of Listerine will probably be going up as well, to compensate for the lack of rides to said liquor stores.
Of course, this comes about right around the time that the Light Rail (Ventura's "Train to Nowhere") is set for her first regular runs.
Sucks for guys like me who take the bus during the winter months. I am about 5 blocks away from downtown, so it's not that bad. The worst is figuring out how to get home late at night. I can bike when it gets warmer. My sister in law goes to school at the U and interns at the Capitol...about 10 miles away. She is kinda hurting.

Dola:
I thought this was funny too.
Taxpayers League (is that an FOF Multiplayer league?) President Questions Need for Bus Service
The head of the Minnesota Taxpayers League says the lack of commuting problems caused by the bus strike shows buses aren`t that much needed in the Twin Cities.
David Strom says transit "just isn`t that important to the smooth functioning" of the Twin Cities transportation system.
Strom`s organization has been a voice against raising taxes and for less government spending. He says he`d prefer to spend bus and rail money on road improvements.
Officials have reported no obvious effects on traffic attributable to the Metro Transit strike, which began Thursday.
DFL Representative Alice Hausman of St. Paul says it`s hard to see the collective effect of the strike on people`s lives, but she says "that does not mean that the impact is not severe."
Meantime, the strike prompted one Minnesota lawmaker to ask that freeway ramp meters be turned off altogether.
Republican Senator Dick Day of Owatonna, sent his request to Lieutenant Governor Carol Molnau. She is also head of MnDot.
Day is asking that high occupancy lanes, or "sane lanes", be opened to all drivers.
Governor Pawlenty`s office is considering all options to cope with the strike.

I agree that the roads need to be improved. Anybody driving through the Minneapolis beltway will agree that the quality of the hiway surface is horrible. The have hotlines set up to report the worst pot holes. What this doesn't report is that Minnesota is finally accepting the .08 alcohol law. We should be getting more federal money for the roads...which means better quality gravel to fill in the pot holes. HEHE

Hmmm. My sister just got a new job at the U of M hospital and she lives out in Hopkins. I wonder if this will have an impact on her. She mentioned to me before that she would probably have to take the bus.

Day has been trying to do this for some time, so not a real big surprise he's using the strike as a reason. That said, I still agree with him.

There are bus lines that are running. It is separate from Metro Transit. Something like Suburban Transit or something. This and the handicapped lines will still be functioning. This may be an advantage for your sister.

There is one other bus line I see other than Metro transit, Suburban sounds like it could be right. Though the campus buses are still running, which is all I really need to worry about right now.

yeah.. this strike definitely sucks. I'm a U of M Student who is also interning at the Capitol, so its kinda pissing me off now. Not to mention that the suburban transit lines are usually done for the day by the time I get done at the Capitol.
