COVINGTON -- A woman was caught trying to use a fake $1 million bill to buy $1,675 worth of merchandise at a Wal-Mart, and was later found with two more of the bills in her purse, police said.

"It looks real, but of course there's nothing real about this," Covington Police Chief Stacey Cotton said Tuesday. "People do crazy things all the time. I think it's just another example of some odd things that occur."
A clerk at the store immediately noticed the bill was fake when 35-year-old Alice Regina Pike handed it to her on Friday, Cotton said.
Pike then tried to use two gift cards with only $2.32 of value on them to buy the merchandise, but when that didn't work she again asked if the clerk could cash the $1 million bill, Cotton said. The store then called police.
Pike, of Porterdale, was charged with forgery. There was no listing for her phone number in directory assistance, and she could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Ms Pike's diabolically clever scheme almost worked but due to the keen observation skills of the well trained WalMart clerk her plan was thwarted.

I'd have just gone to the games aisle, opened a monopoly game and gotten her the change. After all, the customer is always right.

$1 million bill woman says she was confused
Thursday, March 11, 2004 Posted: 8:14 AM EST (1314 GMT)
A police report says Pike tried to pay for the items with the fake bill and even asked for change.
ATLANTA (AP) -- A woman who tried to use a fake $1 million bill to buy $1,675 worth of merchandise at Wal-Mart said it was all just a misunderstanding -- she thought the bill was real.
The United States Treasury does not make $1 million bills.
"You can't keep up with the U.S. Treasury," said Alice Pike, speaking from jail.
Pike, 35, was arrested last week at the Wal-Mart. The bill was a novelty item that can be bought at gag shops. Pike told police she got it from her estranged husband, who is a coin collector.
Pike said she first tried to buy the merchandise with two Wal-Mart gift cards. But the cashier told her the cards only had a total value of $2.32. That's when Pike says she pulled out the $1 million bill.
"All I've got is this," Pike said she told the cashier.
"I wasn't trying to pass off the bill," she said. "That's ridiculous."
A police report says Pike tried to pay for the items with the fake bill and even asked for change.
Prosecutors must decide whether to prosecute Pike on charges of first-degree forgery.

I love this line:
"I wasn't trying to pass off the bill," she said. "That's ridiculous."
Oh, okay. So what you're saying is that you legitimately thought that:
(a) Your estranged husband, who is a coin collector (like THAT matters) would just hand over $1 million in legal tender. Uh-huh.
(b) People waltz into retail outlets with $1 million bills on a regular basis. WHAT, THAT'S UNREASONABLE? okey dokey
(c) That the fact that your are accused of passing a fake bill is the reason this is ridiculous? No, it's that you can vote and procreate.
Yikes.

No, it's that you can vote and procreate.Well, after this little episode, she may not be able to vote for awhile.
As for procreation....
"Three generations of imbeciles are enough" - Oliver Wendell Holmes, Buck v. Bell, 1927. This was one of the low points for the US Supreme Court, since it permitted states to sterilize over 60,000 people based on "eugenics," a science that promoted the idea that social inadequacies are hereditary. Tragically, the Supreme Court's decision was used by Germans as a way to legitimize the same conduct in Germany, which, of course, eventually led to the Holocaust.
Eugenics was later discredited by the Supreme Court, and Holmes' pronouncement was pretty much retracted, in 1942 (Skinner v. Oklahoma).
I wrote a paper on the topic in law school, so this subject holds some interest for me. Still, reading articles like this makes one wonder...

To nitpick a little, while elements of Nazi Germany's agenda included the murder of the mentally ill and other so-called "undesirables" as a supposed means of cleansing the race, as well as to conquer and drive out the supposedly racially inferior Slavs (etc.), the Holocaust was grounded on anti-Semitism in its deepest form. Two distinct elements of evil intent.

Sure, but all I was suggesting is that the foundation laid in the 20's in Germany was assisted, in part, by the US's legitimizing this practice. I agree, though, they took it to a whole new level by the time of the Holocaust.
