Anyone else see this unbelivable game/comeback? Down by 19 at halftime, Maryland had only scored 26 points... come on big time in the second half to win 85-72. Considering NC State only gives up 64 PPG, and today gave up 59 points in the second half alone.. this is shocking. Duke-Maryland tomorrow for the ACC title.

One of the all-time biggest choke jobs in ACC history.

Herb Sendek's teams have a hard time handling success.

Sigh - big Maryland fan, and I leave the house when they're down by 12 early in the first half to go to a neighbor's for dinner. Just came back, and found out they tied the biggest comeback in ACC tournament history?! ARGH!

NO MORE NEIGHBORS!

Yeah, it's obvious that Maryland has no business being considered for the NCAA tournament. :p

CraigSca,
Funny! I did the same thing. My fiance and I were watching (both MD alum) and when they got down by 16 with like a minute to go in the 1st half we left the carnage for errands only to hear on the radio about the comeback.

James,

This was an "invited for dinner by the neighbors" kind of thing, so I had no choice :( .

However, in 1984, when they played Miami in football and were down 31-0 at halftime, I decided to go outside with my buddies to play some football of our own rather than watch the horrid event. Later, when I came home, the first think my brother said to me was, "You know Maryland won, don't you?" It absolutely floored me (and rightfully so). I never forgave myself for leaving that day. Thank goodness for ESPN Classic :)

Having had a couple of days' distance from the game, I don't feel quite as awful about the loss, but dammit it still hurts. Certainly, Maryland knocking off Duke helps.

In all honesty, State played a pretty damn decent second half for the most part. Sure the Terps pressed, but they were usually able to break it. The problem was the when they failed to do so, Maryland capitalized. The big thing the press did, IMO, was force the tempo to Maryland's liking. State would break the press, but wouldn't milk the offense, instead going for the open shot when presented (which makes reasonable sense, except for the fact that State is most effective when it controls the tempo). Those shots didn't fall and Maryland pushed back the other way and usually scored. Add to this Gilchrist, who was absolutely, positively out-of-his-mind and couldn't miss anything, and you can see how Maryland came back. The half didn't start well when Gilchrist flipped up that shot off the glass and got fouled, converting a 3-point play. The press rattled State and Maryland converted another couple of field goals to cut the lead further and by that point, any momentum State had going to halftime was gone and Maryland had it all. Two other moments spring to mind to indicate how it was going: Gilchrist fires up a three from straight on that normally would kick hard straight away, but his shot hits a spot on the rim and backboard that kills the momentum and it drops through. At the time I had thought "Finally, he missed one," looked away briefly from the screen, and looked back to see the scoreboard add three points to Maryland's score. I never saw it go in, I was so sure it wasn't going to. The other was a three-point heave by Gilchrist as the shot clock ran out from over by the bench. When he shook lose and shot, I was sure it was going in. The fact that he banked it only seemed poetic. How do you stop something like that?
