OT: using router with 2 different OS

As can be seen from previous posts, I am entirely computer illiterate. So I ask you guys to help me out. Anyway, I am thinking of getting Windows Xp for my computer. However, I currently have a cable moden that goes through a router to give wireless access to my girlfriend on her notebook. I want to upgrade, she doesn't want to. Is it possible to have the router installed with the two operating systems? Thanks.

Yes, I had a similar setup at home for awhile. We had Windows 2000 Pro on both I then upgraded to XP and had no issues. Though we were not using wireless.

Not a problem. I currently have an xp and 98se machine running at home but like FBPRO not wireless.

So long as the computer supports the wireless network card that is pulgged into it the router should not care what type of OS that its running.

more to the point:

since TCP/IP is the standard for networking, it won't matter what OS's are running behind the router...

OS390, Linux, Mac, Win3.1, DoS, Win9x, win2k, winme, winxp, os2, beos, etc.

as for the wireless as long it supports some form of 802.11 you'll be okay.

Well, there is one potential problem, which I'm having, and haven't figured out how to solve yet. I have a desktop with 98se and a laptop with XP, and while I have no problem connecting to the internet with either of them, they are not seeing each other (and thus, things like file and printer sharing are not working).

been there.... in fact, i think you might be me. i have 98 on the desktop and this laptop has win2k and i can't use the m$ networking features so i don't bother.

The problem with XP and the file sharing is because it is more restrictive than prior Microsoft Windows versions. If they were all running XP, you'd have an easier time. You should be able to go from XP to 98SE, but not from 98SE to XP. It's a Microsoft thing and has nothing to do with anything else, as I understand it.

I have linux, XP, and 98SE on my LAN at home and everything works smoothly. I have had laptops on the LAN as well from time to time running 98SE, 2k, XP Pro, and various Linux/BSD flavors and there is no problem. As long as the OS does TCP/IP, works with DHCP, and the physical hardware has the right drivers/etc...you're good to go.
