Question:

How do I target my pitches on PS2? I use the left stick to move the ball to my target area until it fades out but my pitches always end up going straight down the middle. Do I need to be doing something else to "set" the location I want it to go to? Thank you.

I've only played on Xbox, but you need to keep holding the stick. Don't let it go after the cursor fades out.

CamEdwards

you can also go into game options and change it so that the ball cursor doesn't fade out.

SackAttack

Yeah, you need to hold the stick in place until you release the pitch. Also, the degree to which you put more 'oomph' on your pitches will affect location - if you're throwing your breaking stuff harder, the location is going to be a little more unpredictable.

Celeval

Yeah, I had that problem... you're doing it right, need to change to make the cursor not fade out; or as long as you hold the joystick down, it'll be fine.

Once you start hitting the button to pitch you can release the L-stick. But you have to hold the button for power and then release and then press it again when the cursor is moving down to the green area... (or something like that) I've only played 3 games.

I'm looking to play online and get my ass kicked by anyone. I suck!

I'm still trying to hit it out of the infield most of the time. I don't like any of the angles for hitting. There's definitely some frustration  .

I can hit it out of the infield, but my specialty seems to be bloop singles into the outfield. In playing 12+ games, I've only managed to hit two home runs (one by Nomar, one by Ramirez).

Homers are hard, but I'm getting better. I still think Pro is challenging.

I'm hitting a good number of singles and gap doubles on Pro - after 2 games on rookie and 8 on Pro, I've got I think seven homeruns as a team (3 in the first two games). Playing as the Cleveland Indians (some signing, some trading) - but no power at all.

Do you have to use the control stick at all when hitting? I don't know if it's just a fluke, but my only HR (hit by Josh Phelps) has been when I pressed up on the control stick, and then swung.... that was my first Dynasty game, afetr playing a few exhibition games. I was winning 1-0 going into the top of the ninth, and kept Halladay in there with 40% stamina... he gave up a HR on the first pitch, but I still kept him in there (I don't trust the Jays' bullpen). He thanked me by giving up 2 doubles, and I lost the game. :(

The controller detection really sucks in this game. I have the Logitech Rumblepad, and it wouldn't work until I installed extra logitech drivers... The rumble feature is nice, though... lets you know when you're targeted pitch is out of the strike zone.

If anyone has the same controller as me, how do you tell individual baserunners to advance a base? It says things like "POV(90)" in the config screen, and since I don't know what that means, I changed it to use the right control stick... but now I can't take a lead on any base, or it'll make them try to steal the base...

Celeval

I have a Logitech one that is working well for me, not sure of the type.

You'll notice with multiple runners on that one of the boxes in the upper right is highlighted (the lead runner, usually). You select your 'active' runner using the four buttons you throw pitches with/throw to bases with... with only one runner on, that guy is active.

The POV() directions are for the manual direction pad. It controls your one active runner. So if you have runners on first and second, with the guy on second highlighted - if you want him to go to third, press left on the pad. If back to second, press second. If on first and third and you want the guy on first to go to second, press (button 2 on my controller) to select the guy on first, then up on the pad to send him to second.

Question: Would it be possible to play a Dynasty and only control the AAA or AA team? If I control the AA team, I could get my guys called up to the AAA or MLB team, and would receive a lot of the drafted guys... or if I'm the AAA team, I could lose players to the MLB team or gain them from draft, AA, and MLB...

Is this possible, or do I have to control all three teams?

FBPro

You have control of all of them, not sure that it is possible to not have control of some and have control of others.

Is there a one-pitch manager mode? Is there an option to have the computer take over certain things (ie. hit for you, field for you, etc.)?

Celeval
03-15-2004, 02:40 PM
There is a manage mode, not sure if it's one-pitch; haven't played around with it yet. You can quick-sim, slow-sim (with the option to interrupt to manage or play at any time), manage, or play and game (including AAA and AA). I know there are a variety of assisted play options, but haven't used any of them - again, not my style, so haven't tried it.

Eaglesfan27

I use assisted fielding which I'm finding gives fairly nicely realistic results based on the fielders range and fielding ability.

The manage mode will likely seem cheesy to most, but I enjoy it. It's a mode where you press a selection from choices such as "pitch to batter", "pitch around", "intentional walk" among a few others. It instantly resolves the play and is a very quick way to play the game. You can sub pitchers in at any time. While on offense, you can swing away, hit and run, run and hit, steal a specific base, double steal, bunt for a hit, among other options. Of course you can also pinch hit for anyone. Since I am really bad at offense (playing on the allstar level) I enjoy using this mode to help keep my offensive players with realistic stats (well it's hard to say how realistic they are as I'm not even an eighth of the way through the season) and I enjoy it for checking in on my minor league teams as well as giving me some control when I don't want to play out every game of a 162 game schedule.

PS I highly recommend checking out sliders at operationsports or another similar site.

You can, however, move from play to manage at any time - so you can manage while in the field and play while at bat; or vice versa.

True, but in MM you don't see any of the action. With that being the case OOTP would seem to be the better option.

There are no baseball games for the PC that I am aware of that will have these features. I think that atleast one of the other console games will have options such as this but really haven't checked them out much yet. None of them are out yet.

You have to unlock all of the players on a specific Legends team before you can use any of them, and AFAIK, they're not available for the FA pool.

Thanks. Well that sure is lame. I think I'll be long done with the game before I accumulate enough points to unlock even one team.

As I've now been playing the game more and more, I am really starting to love it. The pitcher/batter interface is just so good. I'm finally at the point where I've developed my eye at the plate, and can start turning on inside pitches to really drive the ball.

One of the reasons for my initial lack of success appeared to me once I started my dynasty. I wasn't hitting well in exhibition games, mostly due to the fact that I was going up against teams' #1 starters (and I was playing good teams--not Pitt or Milwaukee). Obviously its harder to hit these guys, and that's a reason why I wasn't doing so well. But once I get into the #3-5 slots, you can really see the difference in ability. And today I was able to chase Nomo out of the game in the 1st.

Loving the game. Can't wait to keep playing.

No.

You can have historic players in a dynasty if you select the option to make them available during the dynasty setup.

This is really sad, but I have a generic USB 8-button, dual analog stick gamepad which MVP will not recognize. I've confirmed it's calibrated and all that jazz, so why won't the game recognize it?

SackAttack

Because that's one of the travails of playing the PC version. When you have to QA 30 bazillion video cards, and controllers, some stuff inevitabily slips through the cracks.

You would think that someone would've thought that maybe, just maybe, limiting the user to one of six controllers would have been just a bit too limiting, but then again, what do I know? I'm just the consumer who now has to go spend more money just to play the game. Grrr....

samifan24

Ok, I'm playing the PC version and here are some initial thoughts: first off, I am stuck "playing" with my keyboard since EA opted to only support six or eight controllers for the game, so I can pretty much only pitch and swing. I've managed most games in a test dynasty with Tampa Bay (just for kicks) and those games seem pretty reasonable, but when I actually "play" my pitchers always get hammered with one or two huge innings and everything else is pretty much 1-2-3. Hitting is difficult and, as others have mentioned, homers are few and far between. I played an exhibition game as the Bucs vs. the Brewers and it was a good, close 3-2 game because I pitched on Rookie and hit on Pro. I switched levels every half inning and found the results to be pretty fair, although I have not touched the sliders so they may improve this a bit. I have to admit that I really haven't been able to get into the game, mostly because I have yet to purchase a LogiTech controller. I'll have to get back to everyone once I get the controller, because I'm thinking I'll enjoy the game more when I can actually do something other than hitting two or three buttons per game. Just my initial .02 though.

It looks like I'm either gonna sell, trade, or trade in my MVP. I'm just not getting any enjoyment from it at this point, and with ESPN just a couple more weeks away, it looks like it's up to Sega to once again save the season for me.

(Although MLB is doing an admirable job of filling the gap...)

From what I've been reading about ESPN from a beta copy, it's better than MVP as far as dynasty mode, but not near as good on the field. ASB got some really low scores from EGM... what's the point? Once again, console basball will be fun vs a friend, but ootp will take up most of the "solo" time once again.

As hard as I wish for a console game (ala NCAA 2004) that will "WOW" me, or at least keep me interested, another series goes by and I'm back in my comfy computer chair curled up with a text sim.

Yeah, I think as a whole we're just so fed up with console sports games games. The bottom line is this: With baseball games, you can take Soriano (never walks), and if **YOU** have a good eye, you can have him walk every time assuming you get the pitches to do so.

I think what most of us secretly want is good manage only mode for console games. To be honest, I really don't see what the issue with it is. I'm not a programmer (Well, I took a Pascal & basic programming class in high school), but I don't think it would be too hard to modify the "CPU vs CPU" game and make it a manage only game. But then again, some games can't even get CPU vs. CPU right.

I would guess the minority for that feature is the reason. I mean, look at High Heat... as good as a manage only game as it was, how come they went under if there is such a demand for that type of game?

I played High Heat 2000 so much that I still miss it today. Most people thought I was crazy watching a game play out while just making managerial decisions. LOL. :)

I would love to see that as an option in MVP, as the manage mode is just too simple and basic in thought.

Yeah, like I said earlier, High Heat was great at the one pitch manage option.

I haven't played it in a year or so, but did High Heat offer financials? I think back in the 01-02 version, they didn't have financials, which naturally means no player movement.

What a shame, because if it did, I'd be still playing it today. I'm sure there is enough support to churn out a roster each year.

Yep. FPS Baseball was another great one. But to me, High Heat might have been better. One pitch mode was a dream. 10-15 minute games, with realistic results.

I'll do some research and see if there's any mods that make these games still worth something.
