For those of you who don't know what Deadwood is, here is what IMDB.com has to say:
"Deadwood"...a hell of a place to make your fortune. In this original HBO series the year is 1876 and it's two weeks after Custer's Last Stand at Little Big Horn. Deadwood, located on a tract of stolen land in the Black Hills of South Dakota, is in the grip of gold fever, attracting outlaws, carpet-baggers, greenhorns, miners, prostitutes, ex-soldiers, and ex-lawmen. And, because the town was settled on land ceded to the Sioux nation, no U.S. warrant is recognized there; it's entirely lawless. Combining fictional and real-life figures, such as Wild Bill Hickok (Keith Carradine) and Calamity Jane (Robin Weigert) "Deadwood" is the wild west as it might have been and probably was. "Deadwood" is from award-winning writer/producer David Milch ("NYPD Blue") and the stellar cast also includes Timothy Olyphant, Molly Parker, and Ian McShane. You can learn more on the official site, which includes bios, video downloads and more. "Deadwood" premieres tonight, Sunday, March 21st, 10pm/9c on HBO, immediately following "The Sopranos"
I am quite excited for this show. HBO is generally right on with their shows and I think this will be no exception.
So who else will be tuned in?

The community is small right now but I thought it would be fun to have one. I'm a huge history / western buff.

I'm watching, but make sure the kids are in bed. I hear the first couple of minutes are pretty intense.

Oh really Sach?
I haven't heard anything other then see a few previews and read what IMDB said. I think this show has a chance to be quite a fixture.

Im going to be watching. The language is supposed to be very intense all throughout the show. The review I read said that you are kinda numbed to the swearing after a couple episodes.

The one preview I read was overblown that the Calamity Jane character sets all sorts of records for use of a specific female-related expletive.
I'm just ticked off that we have to wait for The Wire.

I've definitely put it into my Tivo for recording, not sure when I'll actually watch it, but it looks really good!

I heard a review on NPR. They actually played a clip of it, and there were more bleeps than a Snoop Dawg video. But, the reviewer made a point to say that if you could look past that, and some horrific violence, it was an excellent show.

It can't be worse then the Sopranos... can it?

I watched the first 20 minutes or so. I was unable to look past the language to see what was actually happening in the show. Seriously, South Park is one of my favorite TV shows, I cuss like a sailor, but that was to the point of absurdity, I saw it adding nothing to the show at all, but subtracting a ton. Don't think i could sit through a whole hour of it.

Yeah, it seemed like the whole concept for this was "Hey, let's have a bunch of cowboys say fuck and cocksucker a lot! That's breaking the mold! That'll sell!" Past the language, there wasn't a whole lot to hang your hat on. Perhaps it'll get better after the establishing episodes.

I enjoyed it. It was rough in the language department, and I'm glad I couldn't see too much of the ambush scene, but I think it's setting up to be a pretty interesting story. I hate the saloon owner, but I have sort of a respect for him, too. We'll see how it goes, but I'll keep watching. I doubt it will lose me as fast as The Wire did.

I've noticed with the HBO series, you really have to give them 3-4 episodes to let them establish who all the characters are. I remember watching the 1st episode of The Wire thinking "Okay, that's not too special." After watching through a couple more episodes, I began to absolutely love the show. With the history of shows that HBO has put out, I'm always willing to give them a couple of episodes as leeway.

My wife & I watched it. She hates westerns and I enjoy them. She found the show interesting enough to watch it at least a few more times.
We didnt flip off HBO for 3 hours, watching the Six Feet Under rerun, then the new Sopranos finally Deadwood.

I watched the Deadwood premiere and enjoyed it. I love westerns so it wasn't that hard to get into it. I like how "dirty" the show is. It's not your typical glamour western.

I really, really like the show. I like Westerns in the first place and I liked the whole set up of a lawless town. It should be interesting to see Swarengen vs. the more moral folk like the ex-Marshall and Wild Bill. And it doesn't glamourize anything. I'll keep watching :D.

Exactly. While the language may have been a bit over the top in the first 20 minutes or so, I think it was in part to set the mood. They're aiming to take a pretty gritty look at Western life.

I'm not too nuts about the "lead" character ("Montana"), he's pretty wooden... but I'm sure this will be an ensemble show anyway. Was I the only one a little disappointed to see the Irish guy gone so quickly? For mere screen presence, I found him to be possibly the most interesting character in the episode. But, I guess there wasn't much to do with that character... oh well.

Don't get too attached to Wild Bill, btw. Historically, he dies in Deadwood in the year they are filming the show... actually a few months after they started.

I agree completely. The criminal was the best actor of the bunch.

I am really enjoying this show. It is nice to see another show following the OZ blueprint. The casting for the most part is top notch. The madam of the Bella Union saloon is fucking hot!
Also very glad to hear that HBO will bring it back for a 2nd season.

I wasn't all that impressed with the first episode, but it's definitely been growing on me. The only thing I'm not sure about is, at the rate they're killing off characters, will they have enough left to get through the season?

I think the first episode was pretty rough around the edges. 2-4 were much, much better. I found the last one a tad slow, but I'm really looking forward to next week. I too hope there is still a logical direction for this show to go in season 2, because right now this is my favorite show.

I agree that the pilot was not as good as the rest of the episodes cthomer. In my opinion it's not up to the standards of some of the other HBO shows like Six Feet Under and The Wire, but it could be heading there. The addition of the new saloon people has been a nice touch. Brad Dourif as the doctor is great!

Deadwood wrapped up the first season this week. I don't know how long it will be before it returns...it was often 18 months between seasons of OZ...but I am very much looking forward to next season. I agree it is not as good as HBO's best but still very much worth watching. Iam McShane as Swearengen has been absolutely perfect IMO.

I will say this: the second to last episode, where the main bad guy delivers his monologue while getting head? I'd put that up with the best scenes ever. I'd put that up against a fucking Michaelangelo. Beautiful.

The show definitely got better and better as it went along, I liked Swearingen getting more introspective and focusing on his problems. Can't wait till next season!
