View Full Version : Who is the most hated team in all of sports?

During the last four days, I have had a few friends visit and all of them were rooting for Duke to lose. I listen to PTI and Tony refers to Duke as the Yankees of college basketball. That got me to thinking. Who is the most hated team in all of sports. Now the waymade my list was to choose which team in each individual sport garnered the most hate from the fans of that sport. Not necessarily my team's biggest rivals but generally hated by fans of the sport. Then I ranked them. Here is my list

1. Yankees(MLB)- I think the Yankees are so far ahead of every other squad I would actually put them 1,2,3. It seems whether they are winning or losing, the Yankees generate more hate than any other franchise in sports

2. Duke (NCAA Basketball)- This one is a little stunning just because Duke seems to be what college basketball should be about. No major scandals, until very recently most of the players stick around for at least three years, success, and a coach who generally does not embarrass his university. But if you ask most college basketball fans who they hate the most, They answer usually is Duke.

3. Hurricanes (NCAA Football)- It makes no difference whether it is Jimmy Johnson's team, or Erickson's, Davis's, or Coker. Whether they are winning championships or sucking under probation, the Hurrincanes are the hated ones. Much of it is can be considered deserved by some (You won't hear me say that! :D ). Maybe I am more sensitive to it as a fan of the Canes, but I can not think of a team that brings more joy to the college football fan in general when/if they lose

4. Lakers (NBA)- I know there are not huge NBA fans here but the Lakers seemed to garner the most hate. From the stars sitting in the front row to Shaq domninating in the middle, the Lakers gone from the darlings of the sport when they won the first of their last three championships to the team that signifies the evil that is NBA basketball

5- The Ravens (NFL)- This was the toughest one for me to figure out for me. Even though the Patriots have won two of the last three championships, no one really HATES them. And the year they did not make the playoffs they was no outpouring of joy either. So I went with the Ravens. They had the trifecta. A hated owner(Modell), a hated coach(Billick) and hated players (Lewis, McCallister etc....).

Yes I did leave out the NHL. I am not a big fan of the NHL and generally do not watch until the Conference Finals at the least. I will, for once, refrain from talking about something I know nothing about ;)

Yeah, there's no way the Ravens are #1 in the NFL.

College football is a tough nut to crack. I'd say there are lots who would put Notre Dame, Nebraska, and the other two Florida schools up there with the 'canes.

But, in all of sports, Steinbrenner is so far beyond everyone else it's not even funny.

Oh, and for the NHL, it's easy. If you're north of the border, it's the Leafs. If you're south of the border, it's the Red Wings. It might be the Rangers but they suck so bad it's not even worth it. It would be like hating the Clippers. Sure, they're in a big city and could have financial resources, but they suck so you just can't hate them.

There's the Yankees, and then there's everyone else.

Ps. Notre Dame is still by far the most hated overall in college football, but it will only take a couple of more years of mediocre football for them to lose that honor.

Yep SI, hate the Red Wings. For some strange reason that I've never quite figured out, the Rangers are my favorite team. I hate every other New York team in professional sports, but ever since I was about 5 I liked the Rangers. But yeah, in recent years I've found other teams to like because they suck so much. :)

1. Chicago Cubs - anyone that wears red hates blue. :)
2. Kansas - did they beat us 3 times this year?
3. Nebraska - Yeah, we're finally there you Cornhuskers.
4. Lakers (agreed) - I can't stand all the St. Louis Laker bandwagon fans.
5. 49ers - Now that Terrell is gone, who can I scream at?
6. Redwings - I can honestly say I get mad just seeing someone wear a Redwings jersey. We sat smack dab in the Redwinds section at home in a playoff game a few years ago, all I remember is the cops showing us and a few Redwings fans, the door.

1) Yankees.
2) Notre Dame.

These seem like no-brainers to me. The rest is debatable IMO, but Duke is probably up there right now (even though I like them a lot).

College football: Notre Dame

MLB: Yankees

MLB - Red Sox - Yankee fans can get annoying, but nothing beats the whininess of the Red Sox nation. In second place are the Braves...their fans have been treated to a club that could bankroll a $100 million payroll for a decade, but they still whine. Try being a fan of a team like the Reds who have to work with half the money.

NCAA football - Notre Dame...by far.

Piss off!

You can hate the Rangers. They are hateable for what they've done to salaries and the like (see: Bobby Holik).

Then there is Colorado. The most hateable team in the world.

Red Wings would be on the list for the most beloved and respected.

Perhaps your misguided hatred for the Red Wings comes from the fact that the Red Wings have beaten the Rangers so badly in the last few years. Or that the Red Wings are that which the Rangers strive to be?

Regardless.... PISS OFF!

Well, that was a personal list based on my biased. I agree though, Man U could be most hated. But, I would have to gather, also most loved. Illions of their little fans running around out there. Just like the Yankees. They basically are the Yankees of professional soccer.

College Football:
1.Notre Dame - I'm so happy they suck!
2.USC - If your on the west coast, and you've been to one of their games, you would start hating them the first quarter (after the 10th time they've played their fight song)
College Basketball: Duke - Hate them cause their good.
NBA: Lakers: I don't hate them because their good, I hate them because of Shaq's big mouth and Kobe: the wannabe Jordan.
MLB:
1. LA Dodgers: What would you expect from a Giants fan?
2. Yankees: Their whats wrong with Baseball.
NFL: This is a hard one, because I hate a lot of teams.
1. Raiders: I hate their fans, bunch of west coast trailer trash...they think their the best franchise in history, yet they only have 3 Superbowl rings.
2. Cowpies...I mean Cowboys: Rivalry between the Niners and Cowboys has been classic. Emmit is overrated...
3. St. Louis Rams: Damn Lambs.
4. Green Bay Packers: Mid to late 90's were a great rivalry. I at least respect Brett Farve because he's great. Never respected Warner(OVERRATED).
5.Anybody who plays the Niners on Sunday.
NHL: Dallas Stars - Go Sharks
Soccer:
1. English National team (you know you're Irish whenever you refer to the English as 'the evil')
2. French National team - Just because their French

Whatdya know? Me and Sharpie agree on something!

Touché. A couple decades ago, I think USC would have been mentioned right after Notre Dame on most college football lists. Now that USC is back, pretty soon the rest of the coutnry will get to re-learn what us UCLA Bruins fans have never forgotten and always known: USC fans are a bunch of the most egotistical, arrogant sonsofbitches around--and they are usually filthy rich, too, thanks to Mom and Dad (GPA doesn't get you into USC...not sure it's even required on the application...).

The band reference is great. And with Tommy Trojan riding up and down the field waving his stupid sword, yeah, you can gte to hatin' them pretty fast.

No offense to individual $UC fans here. Just know that you're a member of a no-good group of fans. ;)

Responses to some of the teams chosen

1. Notre Dame- Man some of you are showing your age! They are sooooooo last century :D Seriously I think that ND has lost its national appeal thus the national hate

2. Europe soccer(football?) teams- I purposely left the pro teams out because it all depends on the league you follow. I enjoy watching FC Barcelona in Spain (even though this year..... :() And they tend to draw the ire of the league And after six years in Germany, I think Bayen Munich haters would dispute this.

3. USC- I think I see this one as being more of a west coast thing but if they keep stealing good players from the folks in the east and don't start playing their games at a decent hour (so the folks back east can see them) they will get there :D

4. NFL- I see that many folks had the same problem I had. Lots of regional hate (Packers/Vikings) or hate based on classic battles (Cowboys/Niners) Not necessrily one that transcends the entire sport. As far as the Raiders go, my final three for the NFL were Ravens, Cowboys, and Raiders. I explained the Cowboys earlier. Raiders still have Jerry Rice on the team and got rid of Romo. They can't get that much hate can they? :D

BTW I noticed no one chose the Pats. I guess winning does not necessarily encourage hate for a team. Or maybe three championships is the starting point? Not that they will get it this year :D ( Relax Pats fans)

It's pretty much just the Leafs for me. Here's hoping for another 37 years without Lord Stanley.

The Dallas Stars and New Jersey Devils would be next but nowhere near the team from the center of the universe.

Being a Redskins fan, my hatred has always been greater for the Cowboys.

Now that the Eagles have TO, they may move to the top of the list.

My biggest sports hatred has to be for the Yankees, though. Jeffrey Mauer(sp?)!!!

For college football, it has got to be Notre Dame simply because they have the arrogance to negotiate their own exclusive television contract with a national network. They can lose 10 games every year and I will still despise them over that tv deal. Why should we be subjected to the Irish every single week? NBC could do better with their money.

As a Philly person, we hate every single team not in Philly. We have a special hate for the Cowboys, Giants and Redskins. The hate is at its highest before we play each of them. If one is really successful that hate is even more focused on them.

Rangers, Devils, Islanders alot of hate there as a Flyer Fan. Oh Buffalo, Pitssburgh and Detroit also.

I used to love the sixers, but now I hate them. I moved on with Larry Brown and I'm a Detroit Fan. Untill Iverson leaves, I hate the sixers. But of course, I hate the Rockets, Lakers and Celtics the most these days. Oh and the Nicks...

As a Baseball Fan. I hate the Yankees, Braves, Cubs, Astro, Cardnials, Marlins and every other non Philly team.

Remember, We hate all the teams not in philly, but those mentioned above we have a special hate for.

Pick the team with the most storied history of championships in its pro sport and chances are if that team isn't the team everyone most loves to hate, it's a strong contender for the infamous honor. I don't know who created the saying "everyone loves a winner" because I've yet to see it.

It's interesting, but those same teams seem to be the most popular as well. You're likely to find Yankee "fans" all over the globe, much more so than any baseball team. Same for the Wings. The Wings tend to attract large (predominantly Wing-supported) crowds in almost all their away-games. It's hard to imagine a NHL team with a larger following.

The difference of course is that the Yankees are evil, while the Red Wings are good.

It's quite simple. I don't see why so many people are getting it wrong. Well, at least half of the equation at least.

I think the most hated team in college football is the one the wins the most (every insult i heard this year seemed to be against the "bucknutts" or the "suckeyes"

there are a LOT of people who hate the Pats. But I agree that the most hated team is the Raiders

I know that I hate a lot of teams because of their fans. If you are an obnoxious prick about your team, you can be pretty sure that I will start rooting against them immediately just for the joy of seeing you unhappy when they lose. It just happens that Cowboys fans are perhaps the most insufferable lot on the planet. Or maybe Notre Dame fans.
