ok, im a windows guy myslef...but, my girlfriend has a mac, and she just bought a scanner that needs to have OS X 10.2.something.

however, in trying to install it, we realized she hasnt updated her mac in 2 and a half years (!!!). so, she still has 10.1.5.

now, on the mac system, as best i can tell, you cant go all the way up to 10.3.3, the current system, without getting every update before it. they arent all-encompasing updates.

and in looking around the mac site, we are stuck on 10.1.5, and cant find whatever the first update in the 10.2 series is. so, does anyone know what to do?

also, mac keeps trying to tell us to install all these language packs we dont want....we are just lost. can anyone walk us through this please?

I know you dont want to hear this, but I think 10.2 is a paid upgrade. Well, rather 10.3(Jaguar) is the most current system. Essentially shes running Windows 98, 10.2 is Windows ME, and 10.3 is Windows XP.

that would suck. why wouldnt 10.2 be mac 11 then? thats like false advertising.

thanks for the reply, i will hold out hope someone else can prove that wrong though!

please, anyone?

10.2 is a paid upgrade, yes. It's weird but that's the way Mac does it. Instead of releasing whole new versions like Windows ME, XP, etc, they keep the same OS but release periodic paid upgrades like 10.2

Mac OS 10.3 is on sale at the apple store for 129 dollars. I don't see 10.2 on sale anymore. Unfortunately, you need to pay to upgrade. 10.3 should run 10.2 peripherals fine according to my friend.

My wife got a new powerbook last fall, and it ended up being right before 10.3(Panther) came out :(

Use the education store, and its only 69.
Though the machine she has may not be able to run it.

Get Panther. Going from 10.1 -> 10.3 will be a HUGE difference. I refused to use OS X until Jaguar came out, but Panther is a godsend. It will make your Mac heaps faster, as well.

It's well worth it.

thanks guys. ive heard bad things about 10.2....any truth?

if we get 10.3, do we have to uninstall 10.1 and all that, or does it just go "right on top" of it?

It should go "right on top of it" without any problems according to my friend (a long time mac user - I've tried to convert her, but she always resists.)

To save some cash, try to find a way to get the education discount. In this case, its 60 bucks.
