View Full Version : And I Thought *I* Was a Nerd
Coffee Warlord

Kid just walked into the office, looking for an internship this summer.
Now, I consider myself to be a rather formidable nerd. This kid (who goes to MIT) beats me by leaps and bounds. Proof?
Listed on his resume as hobbies: Stamp Collecting & Math Tutoring.
Wow.

Nope. But he has Piano Tutoring experience!

He tudors Hillary Duff, Angie Everhardt and Jessica Simpson...so yeah it's just a hobby...

I am tutoring this really hot girl in math as a hobby.

Yeah, but I think you have a different "hobby" you are trying to get her to participate in...so that doesn't count as being a nerd :)

Does it list anything else as hobbies? Or is it safe to assume all he does is collect stamps and tutor people? Maybe he's a swinger as well, but didn't feel the need to put that on his resume. :D And if he tutors Calculus, he could be rich right now.
Coffee Warlord
03-22-2004, 03:49 PM
He does tutor Calculus. Multi variable calculus & diff eq.
He's a psycho, I tell you.
Edit: I take pride in my geekdom. But my level of nerd-dom pales in comparison to stamp & math boy.

See now, instead of "stamp collecting" the guy should have put "philatelist" - the meaning of which might be confused with doing multiple chicks at the same time, or something similarly un-dorkish.

He *did* list Ultimate Frisbee as a hobby as well, but since the other two were the aforementioned Stamps & Math, I think it's a bad attempt at a cover story, especially since he filled half a page on his resume with his various piano playing gigs.

Wait a minute now. Ultimate Frisbee is very cool, and counters two of the geek points at least. Motion to reconsider.

Coffee Warlord

Yes, ultimate frisbee rocks.
However, how he can list that in the same line as fucking MATH TUTORING.
Motion fails.

Someone without enough experience to fill a full page, obviously!

Who lists hobbies on a resume?
Geeks, nerds, and college interns trying to fill space.
In regard to the Ultimate Frisbee, realize that you are two geeks who think it is cool. Therefore the level of coolness has been mitigated. Add one nerd point back.
Motion for summary judgement.

I take pride in my geekdom. But my level of nerd-dom pales in comparison to stamp & math boy.
This thread takes me back to my college days. Going to school at MIT made me realize that there are many, many levels of geekdom.
Me, I'm with Coffee Warlord. A geek to some people maybe, but on the whole, a fairly typical member of society. I guess I'm a regular guy that likes some geeky things (like sport sims). I would say that most of the people I hung out with fell into this category.
The most bizarre bunch of folks at MIT were the "power-nerds". Every sterotype that you can come up with regarding nerdy behavior could be applied to these guys. They practically lived at the library, rarely showered, drank lots of Jolt and had all of the social graces of a peanut butter sandwich. Scary, scary folk.

Well CSPAN and CSPAN2 are the best venues to actually find out what is going on in government. The news channels and newspapers and internet always give there biases in reporting. CSPAN is the only one that shows our government without bias.

The key between being a geek and not being a geek: don't publicly reveal and discuss something that would identify you as a geek. Everyone has geekish habits. I for one like dressing up as King Arthur at Medieval Festivals and jousting with Nerf lances.
