View Full Version : Most Uncomfortable You've Ever Felt About a Particular Message Board Thread...

I frequent another message board (yes, I *cheat* on my beloved FOFC...I can only take a trout in the rectum for so long, then I need some other stimuli), and a thread started yesterday - very innocently, I thought - inquiring as to the whereabouts of a particular board member.
Well, I went back to the thread today to see whether he had surfaced, and it turns out that this was an internet romance gone bad. The posting member is a female, and apparently she got drunk and slept with some guy from her past, effectively ruining an 8-month relationship with another member, who had helped her overcome her past alcohol problems. Naturally, he feels betrayed - both by the drinking and her choice of company - and he is refusing to answer the phone, respond to email, PMs, etc.
How do I know all of this? Well, she posted a plea to him, explaining how she screwed up and begging him to call her, and he posted (just this one time, I might add) to give the rest of the story (her drinking and sexcapades), and as I left the thread, she was back to begging for another chance.
I have to say, reading that thread was the most uncomfortable message board experience I have ever had. I felt like I had walked into someone's house and was watching them sling shit at each other. Except, of course, it is a free, public message board.
What is it about the internet that people are so willing to bare their souls to a bunch of strangers, when otherwise you wouldn't dare do something like this in front of a group of people you've never met?
And of course, to make matters worse, the peanut gallery's comments did not exactly help, as you might imagine.
So...anyone had a similar experience? To me, this goes beyond an HM-type advice thread. It's one thing to ask advice from time to time about dating, sex, death, life, etc., as occurs around here. It's another to have a virtual breakdown for all of the world to see.
*shakes head*
I'm not going back to that thread.

Yes, this is my underhanded way of getting everyone interested in King's X. Come for the emotional trainwreck, stay for the music.
Well, if you're going to go over there, (a) you didn't here about it from me, and (b) check out the band. Seriously. You might as well get something worthwhile out of it...
Actually, if you ARE dead-set on going over there and want something legitimately funny to laugh at, go into the debate forum. I think the FOFC liberals would almost feel a kinship with Reagan compared to the wacko conspiracy theorists on that board, and I think the FOFC conservatives would have a mild heart attack.

Ten minutes to explain what? Why you were momentarily infatuated with a bigger and meatier cock to slob? No explanation is needed. It's a known fact that bitches love to fill their stink-holes with the biggest pieces of meat they can find, and you just happened to find an enormously delightful slab of 'grade A' beef. That fucking mammoth cock didn't actually "mean" anything though, right? You just had a big gaping itch that needed scratching. A few slams up the ass and a quick gulp of gargantuan manhood is all you fucking needed. You've had your fill, now you're back. I fucking get it....Why the fuck can't Freak?

Dude, a whining female that just cheated on a guy does not deserve your pity. That's interesting. My wife commented to me once that she thinks I might have some latent slightly-misogynistic tendencies that manifest themselves by me holding men to higher standards than women. Specifically, she says that I am more likely to excuse or forgive character flaws in women, because I don't expect very much from them in the first place. I wonder if this is an example of what she's talking about. I'll admit that for whatever reason, it is easier for me to "excuse" her behavior, but I'm pretty sure that if it was a guy, I'd hold him to a higher standard. Interesting, I may have had something confirmed today that I've wondered about myself since she brought it up a while back.

Ksyrup, how can you even stand that message board.
Ksyrup
03-23-2004, 02:49 PM
It's an interesting study between this board and that one. I go there mainly to get updates on info about the band and to talk music since, naturally, it's more of a 24/7 topic over there than it is here. There are a number of people I've become very good friends with, and with whom I regularly email and exchange bootlegs and CDs of bands of mutual interest.
But frankly, I wish the board would get vetted every now and then, as some of the topics and people who post them do not give the band a good rep. Of course, it's mostly the band's fault, since they are allowing a couple of guys, on their own dime, to run their site. That's been a point of contention for me and a few others - they hanve't put a dime into the site, so we, the fans, are footing the bill.

Nah, no need for me to rubberneck, I suspect I've seen it all before.
I've seen the sort of thing you describe quite a few times over the years at a variety of forums, and you're right, it can get downright uncomfortable to watch sometimes.
As to the "why" of it, I don't believe there's any one dominant reason but there are several reasons I'd say are common, such as:
-- The Drama Queen (or King). This one is probably pretty self-explanatory. Some people enjoy high drama and/or angst so much that if none otherwise exists, they'll happily create some. And at some point, they'll be involved in another thread just like the one that has you shaking your head.
-- The Truly Disturbed. At some point in threads like those, you may find yourself saying something like "y'know, somebody would have to be really f'ed up post something like that". Well, if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck ...
-- The Chemically Unbalanced. Perhaps the most disturbing of all, when someone gets waaaaaaaay out there, only to sober up in a day or two & regret it dearly. Usually ends with their leaving the forum in question.
-- The "Huh? Who? Me? Once in a while one of these threads gets going and it seems to come as a great surprise that whatever remark was made generated any controversy/upset. It's like "umm ... no, everybody else around here doesn't have carnal knowledge of a duck ... OF COURSE WE'RE SHOCKED THAT YOU DO !".
Those certainly aren't all of the causes, but I believe I've at least hit some of the highlights.
FWIW,
Jon

What is it about the internet that people are so willing to bare their souls to a bunch of strangers, when otherwise you wouldn't dare do something like this in front of a group of people you've never met?
I think it's the anonymity and the barrier of physical distances that enables one to share some truly amazing things one would never do with someone you see on a regular basis.
I've shared some very private things. That's part of the reason why I used my real first name for my handle on FOFC. It forces me to think twice before pressing submit. Otherwise, especially in a moment of dispair, you could write some soul wrentching stuff, press click, and not realize until later that millions could be reading your words.

BLS is a strange album, since it consists of songs written before they actually became KX (aside from 2 of them which are mid-90's Doug demos) from around 1980-1983, re-recorded. An interesting idea for an album, but many of us didn't like the fact that they weren't explicit about how old the songs were on the album. So, many people thought they were new songs, which rightly came as a total shock. There's some definite 80's cheese on that album, but some great power pop-ish stuff as well, that surprisingly fits into the current "scene," even though written 20 years ago.
They've got a ton of stuff coming out this year, aside from a new (NEW!) studio album - Jerry's first, long-awaited solo album, described as Beatles/Jellyfish; Ty's new Jelly Jam album with the DT bassist; Doug's third Poundhound album; Supershine, which is Doug and Bruce Franklin from Trouble; and possibly, an album from Doug and Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam. They start a new tour within the next month as well.

Do they sing in their music?
KX? Yep, 3-part harmonies. Here's a quick blurb about them from the allmusic.com site:
"Few hard rock bands are as widely respected yet criminally overlooked as King's X. The trio (bassist/vocalist Doug Pinnick (javascript:z('1DOUG|PINNICK')), guitarist/vocalist Ty Tabor (javascript:z('1TY|TABOR')), and drummer/vocalist Jerry Gaskill (javascript:z('1JERRY|GASKILL'))) seemed destined for the big time with their irresistible blend of melodic Beatlesque (javascript:z('1BEATLESQUE')) harmonies, metallic riffing, and prog rock detours, yet for reasons unknown, never truly broke through to a mainstream audience..."
In short (hey, I'm an attorney, do you think I know what short is?)...they were labeled as Christian rock in the late 80's/early 90's, and got unfairly pigeonholed, and they've never really escaped that label. Their first 4 albums were made with Sam Taylor (of ZZ Top fame), who played up the Christian stuff, much to the chagrin of the band. The lyrics were spiritual, but in a not-so-open way (until Taylor hit people over the head with it on Faith Hope Love, but that's a whole different story). In fact, the first 2 albums have a CS Lewis connection (Out of the Silent Planet being the first album title, and the name of the first song on the second album), but are not overtly Christian in a "God is my rock" type way.
They parted ways with Taylor after their 4th album, and the music became less overtly Christian, happy, and "progressive." It's difficult to describe what they sound like now. They have been credited with being one of the first bands to pioneer the grunge (drop-D tuning) sound, and Pearl Jam, STP, and Alice In Chains all admit to being heavily influenced by them. But, they never hit it big. Even with Dogman, which was released at the height of grunge (1994) and produced by Brendan O'Brien.
They've kinda accepted their place now, and do a massive amount of touring and side projects. I think they're content with where they are after having been named on VH1's 100 most influential hard rock artists. They were quite honored by that, considering no one outside of the industry knows who they are, yet many bands love them.

Great thread. :D
Unless he's actually in on it I nominate sholiz for most gullible human award in 2k4.

The part I liked most was threatening to send BaconRind over to kick his ass.

Gotta love Smegma's response:
Most of the moronic shit put on this board has no merit whatsoever (just take a look any post by Teena, Rev, or F&B). Make no mistake about it though, I ALWAYS speak the truth. Just because you admitted that your 'Freak' thread was a sham doesn't change the fact that Freak's toddler dick is preventing him from 'getting any' and Elf is in fact a cock craving cunt.
LOL!

Everytime i google "crappy progressive rock" I get sent to Rush boards. :(
Man I come by the site maybe once a week these days, read only about 10-15 threads per visit (and if it weren’t for the fact that the eNFL site was down, I probably wouldn't have even stopped by tonight) and I run across this!
*Ponder* what's it all mean I wonder?

I was meeting with a guy tonight that saw Rush back in 75 at a teen center in St. Paul. He said they were unbelievable. There weren't more than 100 people there to see them. He talked to all 3 of them after the show. He said he told them that they were gonna be huge, because they were like nothing he had ever heard or seen. Cool stuff to hear.
