Ok, good idea but what's up with hitting the 9 dialing 911? Are they saying that pushing a nine on a turned off phone dialed 911? That's what it seems like. That's just crazy.
Who thought of this genius plan?? It shouldn't take much thought to realize that this isn't a good idea.

If you mess up and call 911 by accident, you should be charged $50. I bet nobody would call it then

How many people are going to put the little thingy on the 9?

1. I'm sure you have to press and hold the 9.
2. There is a function to lock the keypad, for exact situations like tossing it into a pocket, bag etc... You have to hit a combo of keys/password to unlock it. I'm sure these morons were not using it.

Well, if the cell phone from hell does it and you didn't even know the thing was programmed that way, and I surely would not have imagined, you shouldn't be charged.
I once had a fax machine that broke and called 911. I don't think I should be charged for that either.
Most of the time they will call back if you accidently call 911 but the fax was in control and they couldn't reach us.
Now, I read a news story a while back about a woman who dialed 911 because McDonalds wanted to charge her for extra dipping sauce. They didn't charge her but IMHO $5,000 dollars wouldn't be enough.

74k in one year in one county seems to indicate way more than moronic users even for Florida.

The same people that are hitting the button/having it accidentally go off, are the same people who wont use these guards. The guards make your phone look dumb.

Its called "Keylock." Not exceptionally hard to use it.

This woman should have gotten sent to jail for this dumb shit. Unacceptable.

people are very stupid. Toss in the fact that tons of 13 year olds have cell phones, and plenty of older people with no real expereince with technology have them. That number sounds plausible to me.

1. Didn't say it was hard at all. I just would never have dreamed that the phone would have such a dumb feature. Since using a phone in and of itself isn't hard I wouldn't have necessarily read the manual. In fact, I do have a cell phone that I bought but had turned off and I never read the manual. Luckily I never pressed nine or it isn't that type of phone. I have no clue.
2. I agree with the jail time comment.

Actually, my phone will allow you to dial 911 even if the keypad is locked. I've pulled my phone out of my pocket with 911 ready to dial a couple of times.
It's a Sanyo 4700, if you care to know.

Come to think of it, I'm getting more confused.
Presumably the point of allowing 9 to dial 911 is to expedite the dialing in an emergency. Locking the keypad defeats this purpose. If you've taken that much time might as well just press 11 and send.

Ok, I just don't understand sentiments like this. Is the problem here the cell phone or the loudmouth guy?

I hate cell phones myself. I don't believe that communication needs to be that intrusive or immediate. That's why I don't use mine.
Separately, I hate the type of person that cell phone users become once they have one. I'm talking about unsafe driving and not turning the ringer off kind of thing more than talking at a restaurant. That one I don't get either. If two people are there talking loudly to each other do you give them the same talking to???

Considering a good 90% of Cell phone users are rude, Id say a combo of both. Cell Phone users need to get banished outside. Just like us Smokers.

So, you hate them but you want them to be banished to where you are. Very strange.

I can go without smoking for 30-45 minutes while I eat. Someone can surely go 30-45 minutes without talking on their cell phone. And if they "desperately need to" they can go outside.

Most phones will allow you to dial emergency numbers even when the keypad is locked. Over the past 6 years or so, my cellphones have dialed emergency numbers a few times (though our emergency number is 999, which is much easier to dial by accident)

Ok, but you haven't answered about two people talking to each other. It's a restaurant not a library. Hey, I agree with a lot of what you're saying but this just doesn't make any sense.

You havent the noticed the difference between 2 people having a conversation at a table, and people talking on their cells? People shout into them bastards

I feel that in that situation, you should make yourself part of the conversation. A friend of mine used to pull out his wallet (you know, the kind that folds down) and start yelling "BUY! BUY! BUY! SELL! SELL! SELL!" into it. That usually shut people up. But we're both inconsiderate assholes. That may not work for everyone.

I think you're falling for the same myth that emergency rooms are overrun on a full moon myself. This has been studied and disproven that any connection exists but people insist it's true. It's because they NOTICE that it's a full moon and they falsely put two and two together.
I've seen both conversing people and cell phone users talking too loudly all the time. I'm sure you have too but since you hate cell phones you NOTICE when they do it. You have then fulfilled your own bias. JMHO.
