Aggie's Hire New Basketball Coach

Associated Press

College Station -- Texas A&M moved quickly today to fill their open coaching position, coming to terms with Michael Ryan. Ryan, a local high school basketball star who went on to play for the Aggies, recently retired from the NBA because of a serious car wreck he sustained last Christmas.

In his first press conference, Coach Ryan emphasized his commitment to the fundamentals of good basketball. "This team," he said, "will be a team that does the little things really well, rebounding, passing, handling the ball. We're out to recruit student athletes who will help build up the reputation of this program. Right now, we are the doormat of the Big 12. It is a sorry state of affairs when you find yourself looking up at Baylor."

As many Aggie fans recall, Ryan has little love lost for Baylor University, a school he claimed played with a bounty on his head. Athletic Director Steven Barnwell said, "As a player, we all loved to see Ryan on the court and watch the passion and desire that he had for the game. Ryan will bring those things to the table as a coach, and he will end up being one of the smartest decisions we've ever made."

Some critics of the hiring say that A&M should have pursued a high-profile coach with experience. Ryan has no coaching experience, but has spent a lifetime on the basketball court. It will be interesting to watch and see how he handles the many challenges facing him as he attempts to rebuild a program that is the perennial doormat.

Aggie's New Coach Fills Staff

Associated Press

College Station -- Coach Ryan announced three new staff members today. Gino Sutton, a graduate of Lafayette University, will serve as the recruiting assistant. Bullin is 39 years old, and is considered to be a pretty good recruiter. Ryan said, "Coach Bullin is just the kind of guy you want to send to student's homes to meet their families. He is a great basketball guy who can make a great pitch for our school.

Also joining the staff is Steven Fowler who will serve as Ryan's scouting assistant. Vest, who is only 26, has a pretty good eye for judging talent and does a good job of projecting the potential of players. Vest is a graduate of Hartford.

The third member of the staff is Reuben George, a 37-year old graduate of New Hampshire. He is considered to be one of the rising stars in the coaching ranks and has one of the best offensive minds to ever coach the game. Coach Ryan, who was a great defensive player in college, said that they balance each other well and they will make a great team of coaches.

In other remarks, Coach Ryan announced that within the coming months they would finalize the schedule and begin preparing for the recruiting season.

Aggie's Finalize Schedule

Associated Press

College Station -- School officials released the upcoming season's schedule today. In a calculated gamble, Coach Ryan sought to play all but one of the non-conference games against Texas teams. In a statement released today Coach Ryan said, "I am excited about the upcoming season. We are going to be playing a lot of Texas schools. Hopefully, this will help us in recruiting more of local athletes if we can beat these teams. We are also traveling to Duke to play our last non-conference game. This should be a good test for where we are as a team before the conference games begin."

Already controversy and we haven't spraypainted the floor maroon at the Frank Erwin Center yet. :D I mean, if that happens during the course of this dynasty, the Texas A&M Athletic Department denies all allegations and all receipts from the team's trip to Home Depot were accidentally shredded!

Yeah, I guess the timing probably isn't pretty good. Sorry about that, I'm sure it's a pretty sore subject there.

Recruiting Season Starts in Aggieland

Associated Press

College Station -- The Aggies find themselves with 4 scholarships to fill for the upcoming season. In an interview this morning, Coach Ryan said that the team was looking to recruit a center, small forward and point guard specifically and then looking to target the best available player. This is the first chance Coach Ryan has to put his stamp on the team. When asked what type of players he's looking for, Coach Ryan replied that he was looking for athletes who have proven to be good students in high school first. "Besides being smart, we're looking for guys who've been productive in high school. We're looking for a center who can rebound and play defense, a small forward who can score and play some defense, a point guard who has a good assist to turnover ration and good free throw percentage. It should be an exciting couple of months for us."

Early leads on who the Aggies are targeting include:
