View Full Version : OT - Does your team have a national championship?

Somewhere along the way since Saturday, it was mentioned that Georgia Tech is looking for their first ever "official" NCAA national championship (since the college football crown isn't an official NCAA awarded title).

I mentioned to my son that this week was a very rare opportunity, possibly two national championships in two days with Georgia Tech (my team) & Tennessee (my wife's team) going for titles on back-to-back days.

That started me wondering ... does "your school" have a national championship in the trophy case?

For me, right now (and quite probably even after tonight), the answer is no. GT has had good basketball, baseball, & men's golf programs in the past but never a championship outside of football.

While I'm asking, I'll tell you the other thing that I've thought about several times since Saturday -- if I'm this nervous, I honestly don't think I can truly imagine what it must be like to be 19,20,21 years old & have both an opportunity & a pressure situation quite this big laying on my shoulders.

FU has a d-1a football championship and the only player to score 100 points in a college basketball game, but nothing too major.

Yes, football in 1959 and basketball in 2002-2003 (plus numerous lacrosse titles).

Yeah, Minnesota has won a few. A few in hockey, a couple ancient football championships, a few in other sportslike golf and wrestling.

Whenever anyone takes a shot at Norm Stewart saying he never won a national title, I point out to them that Norm was the starting 1B and a pitcher on the 1954 College World Series champion Missouri Tigers. :)

I also believe Mizzou has a track team national title, and maybe women's gymnastics.

I went to UCLA and have a vague impression that we might have one of those championship things.

Hmm I wonder if my school holds the record for NCs? If not they have to be up there. I think we have around 40 track and field national championships :)

Of course the 94 basketball NC and 64 football NCs too.

EDIT - Arkansas, of course.

UC Davis won the D-II basketball championship a few years ago (I think in 1998). It has come close in football a number of times, but never quite pulled it off. I think it has some championships in some minor sports, too - it has always had a very good all-around D-II athletic program, although that is coming to an end, as it is moving up to D-I (D-IAA in football).

Stanford would have been my second team, knowing all of those golf titles they won. UCLA I think had a lot of volleyball titles. OSU both baseball and golf, probably. USC had a little bit of every single sport.

I figured we'd might sneak something else in there but I knew we had some track banners to go along with basketball trophies, but that's it.

Yes, we've got a few. And tonight we add another.

I turned down a flight, rental car, a free place to stay and lower level game tickets for $470. Might not have been my best move.

Arizona State:

Besides national titles in smaller sports such as Badminton, Archery, a few Women's Gymnastics, we've had half a dozen Womens' Golf titles and 5 Men's Baseball National Championships (65, 67, 69, 77, 81).

None in basketball or football...though we finished #2 in 1975 (12-0) behind an 11-1 Oklahoma team.

Looks like we've won 16 national titles in all.

Yup, we've always had a great track program, but it was world class back in the seventies. And of course, there's that basketball championship back in '66... :)

Edit: Oh, and it's 21, not 20 Ragone. Get the numbers right... ;)

Part of the point of this one at least - there ARE no "official" NCAA football (D-IA) championships, IIRC. Of course, there's no reason to have playoffs

I'm just one of those guys who believes if Georgia doesn't win it, I would like to see the championship in the state. Plus, UGA beat Tech this year, and that is all that matters. :D

My Univ. of Dayton won 2 Division III football championships before they were forced to go I-AA non-scholarship and essentially kneecap the program, and I believe that's it.

Two basketball titles, 1974 and 1983.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few individual champs, particularly in cross country or something like that.

Women's cross country won several national championships. Joan Benoit and Julie Shea both won individual championships, I think.

Plus, when I was on the NCSU track and field team, our 4x100 meter relay team won the NCAA's.
