stupid yes, but something has to be said about the fact that this guy HAD to have been the prime suspect, and it took them 14 years to catch him.

Well, think of it this way:

1. He was convicted of rape in 1993, and we don't know how long he was in jail. He might have only recently gotten out, and didn't want to bring attention to the storage place by immediately going there.

2. I'm sure someone put 2 + 2 together about the rape and the murder being related, so he likely felt some continued pressure and felt like it was safer to leave well enough alone. Especially since 14 years had passed and no one found out about the storage unit.

3. The other thing we don't know is whether he had been renting the unit before the murder. If so, there was no reason for him to not put it in his name at the time. And maybe he didn't have anyone close enough to him to confide in to change the name on the unit once he was convicted of the rape.

I'm glad he got caught, but I don't really think he was stupid. As the years went by, he probably felt more and more confident that no one would ever find the storage unit.

Maybe but the da said no one expected him to still have the body there and he does know a bit about the case I'm sure.

Also, he had a month to dispose of the body before she was reported missing. He couldn't have found another place to dump the body? I'd say I'd rather take my chances with the body being found in the middle of nowhere than in a storage shed rented in my name. You'd likely still go to trial either way but the latter is a slam dunk.

Maybe he's not stupid but my money says otherwise. :)

Sure, he could have disposed of it somewhere else, but not too many killers do as good a job as he did in hiding the body. Fourteen years! Scott Peterson sure could have used his advice...
