I know we all get sick of hearing everyone else's bad beat stories, but I figured I'd share this hand anyway. There were about 500 entries in this Limit tourney, and on this particular hand I'm already in the money and trying to increase my stack. My username is Matthew619.

Ugh.
You were ahead, obviously, but at least it was a defensible call with top pair and best unpaired kicker. Under the circumstances, with you fairly short stacked, I think I would have made that call against you, figuring you might well have a weaker ace than mine.
At least the dummy who caught his straight didn't win it.
Nice job on the money finish, though.

Congrats on getting in the money. Quicksand is right though It looks like Mr. Ah Kh had a pretty decent chip lead besides you being short stacked. Actually, he maybe should have reraised you preflop. I doubt that the guy with Ac 5c would have called even with his cards being suited. You definitely played it as well as you could have though.

Thanks.
You're right, the guy who had AhKh was a good player, and his only mistake wasn't 3-betting preflop. The other guy had no business being in the hand.
Anyway, here's the breakdown on the winning % after the flop. I read it and weep.
QsQc - 87%
AhKh - 7%
Ac5c - 6%
Hard to believe, but both longshots ended up getting there. One with running hearts, the other with runners to a gutshot straight.
I don't play many tourneys, but every once in a while I jump in one for a change of pace.

Hey, thanks. I was actually in the middle of replying to Quik's post (and didn't yet see yours), and I ended up saying about the same thing!

I completely agree with QS that it is a good thing Ericeights didn't win. At least the guy with AK had a reason to call you. One of my buddies called me after 11 last night to commiserate some. He lost two huge hands. On the first he called a guy who went all in after the flop. My buddy is sitting with AQ, and the flop comes AQQ, the other guy goes all in. My buddy lost to a straight, i am sorry, royal flush. He had been chip leader up untill then. About 10 hands later he dropped another boat to another straight flush. That time he had AA and trip aces after the flop. He ended up going all in. Some guy stayed with A4, and fillled in to draw the straight flush. Those two hands took him from chip leader to out of the tournament. There were only about 40 people left when he was sent packing.
I told him not to call after 11PM again unless he actually won a tournament.

Ditto on the "at least you didn't lose to the A5s straight"
I've been playing sit n' gos for the last week or so and have been doing very well, if I can keep up my current pace in them I'm going to make that my main game online and try to find the time to play a few NL multi's here and there as well. I think I have learned a lot about tournament play and might have a chance to fare a bit better in them now. I had sworn off multi's as total money sinks a few months ago.

Well, this one is even better. Last night, I made it to the final table, and here's the hand that busted me. Enjoy.

I can't believe that he a) bet out at you after that flop (particularly after your opening raise) and that b) he bet into you again after a useless turn card when you had re-raised him on his previous bet.
He has a grand total of 2 outs. And he hits.
The only thing I can think of is that he was trying to represent a flopped flush...but as soon as you re-raised him he should have been out.
Brutal.

I am in no way justifying the insane call. I just wanted to point out that he actually had 11 outs. The two 3's and any spade would have won the hand for him. Clearly playing for the flush when you only hold the 3s is quite possibly even worse than hoping to spike a 3 on the river, but he still did have the outs. :)

This is interesting to me. Vic has only 9225 chips left. The guy with the 3s has over 31K. I don't think I would have made that same play myself, but I can see the logic at least.
Flop: Bet, he'll fold if he missed the flop, might fold even if he has a small piece fearing the flush. Re-raised back: well, now there's 14K in the pot and it'll only cost me 3225 more(that's all the chips Vegas Vic has left). I don't know if I make that call myself, when a short stack raises, I put him on Ax or Kx or any pocket pair, but there is an ace and a king on the board, I cannot possibly imagine that I'm not behind with my 3's here. Maybe I have the flush outs, maybe not. I probably don't fear a higher set b/c its a short stack, but still...
Calling the re-raise on the flop commits you to call the turn bet.
I think it was a bad call, but given the relative stack sizes I don't think his play was as horrible as Subby describes necessarily.
Losing to the 3 on the river sucks, but he did have 11 outs, so it could have been worse.

Vic, living in Vegas, you go to the casinos and play in tourneys at all. Is it alot funner? Good relaxation and entertainment?

True. He did get banned from Blackjack (I think). What casino was this?

Sundancer,
There are six places where I've been told that my blackjack play is not welcome anymore. I really haven't played in over a year.
As for the poker tournaments, I don't really play them much. The ones that I posted here were on PartyPoker, and I sometimes play them for a change of pace.
On a related note, most of you have heard about the power failure at the Bellagio. As a result, the Mirage poker room became somewhat of a zoo with all of the overflow from the Bellagio. I was playing tonight in a 20/40 holdem game, and the atmosphere was kind of surreal. To my left was a 1500/3000 holdem game with Dave "Devilfish" Ulliott, to my right was a 300/600 mixed game that David Sklansky was playing in, and the table in front of me was a 3/6 holdem game with a group of wide-eyed newbies ready to cap the river with ace high.

Dola,
I just finished a live 20/40 session at the Mirage, and I saw something that I wouldn't even expect to see in a 2/4 game.
UTG limps, I raise with black aces, folded to the big blind who calls, and UTG calls. Three to the flop for $130.
Flop: 9s 5d 2c
UTG checks, I bet, BB calls, UTG calls. Three to the turn for $190.
Turn: Qs
UTG checks, I bet, BB folds, UTG calls. Two to the river for $270.
River: 4s
UTG checks, I bet, UTG raises, I call.
UTG turns over Js2s and takes down the $426 pot with the runner/runner 4th to the nut flush. I couldn't even get mad. I just busted out laughing along with the rest of the table.
The long run takes a while to kick in.......
