View Full Version : Four Georgia Boys (retrying "from the swamp...")

OK, so my first shot at this failed miserably when the dumb S.O.B. left school after not playing a down in college (academic troubles). This time, I decide to track four guys. They're all Top 100 recruits from my home state of Georgia. I restart a few times until I get some Top 100 guys from a high school or two with which I have direct ties, and here are the players:
QB Albert Brookins (#43), Bradwell Institute
T Kelvin Palmer (#58), Brunswick
QB Darren Abdul-Malik (#75), Tucker
DT Doug May (#84), Shaw
Well, Tucker High less than 1/2 mile from my home, and Shaw is in Columbus, and the school district I lived in and would have attended had I not gone to a private high school. My brother is a Shaw grad. Abdul-Malik and May definitely give this a "local flavor" for me. As with the first try, I'll be fast-simming an SC8 school and reporting on these guys' progress, then when they enter the draft, I'll be very loosely controlling Arizona (just signing FA's to keep 'em competitive) in the NFL. Details on these guys in the next post.

SCOUT DETAILS
QB BROOKINS
According to my SC8 scout (lousy with QB's), Brookins likes to run an above average amount of times. His strength is at avoiding the INT, and his biggest weakness is in timing receivers. He's got average ratings consistency. After four games, he is 39 for 85 (45.8%) for 609 yards with 4 TD's and 2 INT's, and has rushed 88 times for 546 yards with 6 TD's. He's looking like a mobile QB.
T KEVIN PALMER
My SC8 scout (poor with OL) says that Palmer's best at pass protection, weakest at run blocking, and that there's a very low ratings consistency.
QB DARREN ABDUL-MALIK
He likes to run "all the time", is best at touch passing and is worst at avoiding INT's. His ratings consistency is very low. Through four games, Abdul-Malik is 63 fro 107 (58.8%) for 1083 yards with 6 TD's and 8 INT's.
DT DOUG MAY
My scout (Pretty Good with DL) says that this kid is best at defending the run, weakest at rushing the passer, but that his ratings consistency is high. He has 29 tackles and 5.5 sacks through 4 games.

WEEK ONE
QB ALBERT BROOKINS
Three schools contact him this week, and two give offers. The Dawgs look like the early favorites to land him. FSU contacted, with no offer. SC8 Columbus (my team, recruiting managed by AI) also makes an offer.
T KEVIN PALMER
Also gets contacted by three schools, with two offers. As with Brookins, the Dawgs look to be the early leader. His other scholly offer is also from Columbus. Georgia's 92 prestige, and decent proximity, appear to make them the prohibitive favorite to land him.
QB DARREN ABDUL-MALIK
He gets his first scholarship offer, from all the way out in Oklahoma. The Sooners, with only a 52 rating in his chosen major (medicine), don't look to be a serious threat to land him. Texas also contacts him this week, and they have an 88 in medicine.
DT DOUG MAY
The kid outta Shaw High attracts the most early attention of the Georgia Four, with four scholly offers. The Dawgs, Tech and Nebraska join Columbus in asking him to come play for them. Florida also contacts him, but with no scholly offer yet.Tech's 94 rating in Dentistry looks daunting, but actually Columbus *could* be a player here. They have a 79 in Dentistry, and are right there at home for him.

WEEK TWO
QB ALBERT BROOKINS
Boston College and FSU both come to the table with scholly offers this week. BC has an 82 in Random Number Theory, the highest among Brookins four offers, but he is visiting Athens already. Georgia could be a good situation for him. They have three good QB's under scholarship, but none will be eligible past next season.
T KEVIN PALMER
LSU comes to the table with a scholly offer, but he's also visiting Athens now. Being a Prestige*/Dist guy, I doubt he's going to pass up the in-state school with 92 prestige. Georgia has a 16/99 T with 3 years left, and a 23/82 with 2 years, but their best freshman tackle is rated 23/47.
QB DARREN ABDUL-MALIK
Columbus makes an offer to him (78 in Medicine). K-State (41) makes contact as well. His offers are Columbus and Oklahoma. Still looks like a wide-open field for him.
DT DOUG MAY
Florida becomes the fifth school to offer him a scholarship. Tech still appears to be a slight favorite.

WEEK THREE
QB ALBERT BROOKINS
'Bama weighs in with a scholly offer, but their 47 in RNT doesn't look too impressive. He's still visiting UGA only.
T KEVIN PALMER
'Bama, FSU and Texas have made contact, but with no offers. Still only visiting the Dawgs.
QB DARREN ABDUL-MALIK
He gets a new offer from Mississippi State (34 in Medicine), and the Dawgs make contact, but with no offer. For a top 100 guy who is Acd*, so far he doesn't have any attractive offers really. They are from Columbus (78), Oklahoma (52) and Miss. St. (34). Texas has contacted, but not offered. He'd appear to be ripe for the taking by them, with their 88 in Medicine and high prestige.
DT DOUG MAY
He gets his sixth offer, this one coming from Iowa. He's still visiting no one, and it looks like he'll be the most hotly-contested of the Georgia Four.
QB DARREN ABDUL-MALIK does get no love maybe due to the fact that he comes from Tucker ?

Same here, though Abdul-Malik sounds too similar to Abdul-Khaliq, which scares me. http://www.fof-ihof.com/phpBB2/images/smiles/icon_puke.gif
Sounds more like Abdul-Jabaar to me ;)

WEEK FOUR
QB ALBERT BROOKINS
He is now visiting FSU in addition to UGA. Scholly offers and visitn requests from 'Bama, BC, and SC8 Columbus.
T KEVIN PALMER
No one else has gotten a visit out of him A&M, LSU and Columbus have all given him offers along with Georgia, and four other schools have contacted with no scholly offer. Still, he's looking more and more like a Bulldog every week.
QB DARREN ABDUL-MALIK
Still only Miss State, Okie and Columbus have made offers. Four others (UGA, K-State, Texas and Toledo) have made contact.
DT DOUG MAY
Visiting two sschools now: Georgia and Florida. The Gators have an 81 in Dentistry. I'd still say it is pretty wide-open for him.

WEEK FIVE
QB ALBERT BROOKINS
Look out, ladies and gents! Michigan has come calling. He's now visiting FSU, Michigan and UGA. The Wolverines lead with a 95 in his major, but they're far away, and came in a little late. Interesting. He finishes his high school regular season 103 for 195 for 1535 yards, 8 TD's, 5 INT's, and with 1074 rushes for 1099 yards and 13 TD's.
T KEVIN PALMER
Ohio State becomes his 2nd visit school. With him being Prs*/Dis, they might have a legit shot.
QB DARREN ABDUL-MALIK
Toledo gives him his fourth scholly offer, but they are a 15 in academics. Still no visits. He finishes the year 126 for 221 for 2099 yards with 13 TD's and 10 INT's, and rushes only once all year for four yards. Buc would love this kid, but only one rush for the season definitely doesn't sound like a Tucker QB!
DT DOUG MAY
He's now visiting Ohio State along with Georgia and Florida. Finishes the year with 66 tackles and 10.5 sacks.

WEEK SIX
QB ALBERT BROOKINS
Brookins commits to UGA. This looks like a great fit for him. The Dawgs have three good QB's, but they all have 0 or 1 year eligibility remaining. They have two crappy guys with 3 and 4 years left each. Assuming they sign no other QB this year, right now the road is clear for him to red-shirt one season, and start the next. Georgia's current coordinator lieks to run the "I", a good formation for an option QB, and he's Excellent at QB development.
T KEVIN PALMER
Kevin will be keeping pass rushers off of Albert in Athens for the next few years, after committing to Georgia as well. He does *NOT* have the wide-open situation that Brookins has, though. Georgia is fairly deep and young at offensive tackle.
QB DARREN ABDUL-MALIK
This little dynasty could get *REALLY* interesting in a hurry, 'cause Abdul-Malik has one and only one visit school now....GEORGIA! Columbus, Oklahoma, Mississippi State and Toledo all have offered schollies, but right now it looks like he could be battling for playing time with our friend Brookins. Given the lack of QB depth beyond next year, it would make sense for Georgia to sign two QB's if they can.
DT DOUG MAY
He now has four visit schools: Florida, Ohio State, Georgia and Nebraska. Also, 6 other schools have offered schollies.

Be pretty easy to track them if they all signed to Georgia. ;)

WEEK SEVEN
QB ALBERT BROOKINS
Committed previously--UGA.
T KEVIN PALMER
Committed previously--UGA. More potential bad news for him, playing-time wise. The Dawgs sign another Top 100 T! Emmitt Cameron from Pike County (AL) HS, rated 78, signs as well this week.
QB DARREN ABDUL-MALIK
He now jumps from one to four visit schools. Columbus, Oklahoma, Mississippi State and Toledo visit, but Georgia drops all interest. I guess they got their man in Brookins. SC8 Columbus (78 Acd) might actually have a shot at this kid. He is Acd*/Prs. The nearest academic school so far is Oklahoma (52). Who knows?
DT DOUG MAY
May joins a parade of Top 100 guys heading to Georgia. He commits this week. The Dawgs have SIX commitments from Top 100 players now. There is a good amount of talent at DT already in Athens, but only one talented player (14/73) has more than two years eligibilty left. May appears to be in line for at least three years of signiificant playing time.<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

T KEVIN PALMER
Committed previously--UGA.
QB DARREN ABDUL-MALIK
He commits to.........COLUMBUS! Yup, a Top 100 player winds up at an SC8 school in year 1. Pretty cool. He'll almost certainly be a four-year starter. Columbus BEST QB is rated 10/30.

Here's how they're looking after Pre-Season Processing:
QB Darren Abdul-Malik (Through eyes of Lousy scout):
He's on "my" team, so I can see his red/green bars. He's rated 20/70 overall, with his best rating being 100 in 3rd down passing. He's 8/30 in avoiding INT's, and better at short and medium passing than long. His scramble frequency is only 7.

Surprisingly, Columbus is red-shirting him. I guess the AI is now hard-coded to red shirt if there is a lot of growth potential and enough older guys to fill the position, which is a good thing in my opinion. He could use the year to get better, even though the starter this year will be 11/30.

Brookins is red-shirted this year. His ratings are a disappointment. Nevertheless, he actually has a chance to play next year. There are two studly QB's at UGA (86/100 and 62/94) but both are in their final year of eligibility. The only other guy has two years left, but he's only 23/51. Of course, if the Dawgs sign a better QB this year, that would be problematic.

Happy now, Jeeber? ;)
Seriously, this is an easy career to jump in for a few minutes, do some simming and reporting, then jump out. It is a "reporting" dynasty, not a "decision-making" one. I'll quick-sim through 2004, let you know if Columbus or UGA signed any freshmen who might challenge any of the Four Georgia Boys for playing time, then go back to OOTP6.

Columbus signed a QB rated 34 overall. Should be no threat to Abdul-Malik.
Georgia signed the #171 QB in the land. According to my Terrible scout, the overall impression is 53. Probably won't be significantly better than Brookins.
The Dawgs signed two more T's, but they are 69 and 71 overall and should be backups to Palmer.
With all four DT's having at least a year of eligibility remaining, the Dawgs signed no one at that position next year. May should be the top backup at the very worst.

2005 PRELIMS
(after pre-season processing)
QB Darren Abdul-Malik (Through eyes of Lousy scout):
The kid outta Tucker High progresses *very* nicely during his red-shirt year, to the point where he has mostly red and very little green. He's on "my" team, so I can see his red/green bars. He's rated 53/70 overall, with his best rating being 100 in 3rd down passing. He's 65/79 in short passing, and 54/65 in medium.

He is, by *far*, the best player on Columbus' team. The next-best? I guess it would be a 35/60 FB. After him, take your pick between a 34/34 T, and a 25/52 G. He should play every snap of every game if he doesn't get hurt. My guess is that he's the best player in the SC8 by a wide margin, especially at this early juncture. (Can't help but be reminding of a certain Tucker QB choosing Troy State over Nebraska, LSU and Mississippi State in real life... ;))

He has a shot at starting this year! He actually has the best current rating of the three UGA QB's according to my scout. The 5th-year Senior on the roster, Brenden Bishop, is rated 27/51. The freshman signee? Only 11/42. Yup, the Dawgs have had two straight Top-200 QB's show up in Athens with disappointing ratings.

Didn't progress much, and barely stayed eligible. Nonetheless, he should be no worse than the #3 tackle, and therefore primary backup. 5th-year Senior David Henderson (38/81) and fellow member of Class of '03 Emmitt Cameron (38/61) look like they're ahead of him.

2005 WEEK ONE
The Dawgs are at home on TV1 against NC State, and Columbus is off. Georgia is ranked #26 in the preseason.
The AI decided to started 5th-year Senior Brenden Bishop at QB for the Dawgs, so Brookins only got to play the very last series of the game, and overthrew his only pass of the day. The Dawgs were humiliated at Sanford Stadium 47-21.
T Palmer didn't play as much as I though he would. He was in on five running plays, and five passing plays. He didn't have any KRB opportunities, but he did give up one sack. This was a *very* inauspicious start to this dynasty...

2005 WEEK TWO
Iowa State at #45 Georgia (-6)
Columbus at #44 Auburn (-8)
Georgia has a much better go of it this week, and they have a *NEW* starting QB, Albert Brookins! :D On Brookins third play from scrimmage as a starter, he threw a 56-yard TD pass, and the route was on. Georgia won 41-0, and when the smoke had cleared Brookins was 8 for 14 for 166 yards with 2 TD's and 1 INT. Palmer is in on 11 snaps this week, with no sacks and no KRB opportunities again.
One would expect that an SC8 team on the road against an SEC team wouldn't stay as close as the 31-3 loss that Columbus suffered to Auburn, but having a legit starting QB like Abdul-Malik seems to make a big difference. He was 17 to 34 for 244 yards with 0 TD's and 3 INT's. However, his passes kept drives alive several times. In fact, on his first snap of his college career, at first and 10 from the 20, he connected for a 33-yard completion into Auburn territory. When the drive was through, he had marched Columbus all the way down to the Auburn 7, where the drive stalled and a 24-yard FG was successful. Columbus runs the Wing-T, and rushed 34 times for 56 yards, so Abdul-Malik was practically their only offense.

2005 WEEK THREE
Columbus (0-1) at #8 Tennessee (1-0) (-14)
This one was the height of humiliation. The Vols put up 89 points on the board. Columbus' only score was an interception return for a TD. Abdul-Malik was 2 for 13 for 16 yards on the day. His backup fared no better: 3 for 12 for 14 yards with 1 INT. The only good news is that the next game is against an SC8 foe.

2005 WEEK FOUR
Both teams off.
2005 WEEK FIVE
#43 UGA (1-1) at #25 Ole Miss (3-0) (-6) (TV4)
Rome (1-2) (-3) at Columbus (0-2)
Abdul-Malik, stifled by the Wing-T, still shows his great value to Columbus in this 29-23 win. Columbus trailed by 3 with only 58 seconds to play in the game, and took over on their own 27. Three plays and three Abdul-Malik completions later, they were kicking the game-tying field goal to send it into overtime, where the defense stopped Rome, and a 25-yard TD run was ripped off on the first play. On the day, Abdul-Malik was 14 for 19 for 137 yards with 1 TD and 0 INT's. He had 0 bad throws, 1 drop, 3 defensed and 1 blocked. Nice day!
Brookins has a fine day on the road, but it isn't quite enough as the Dawgs fall 28-21 to Ol' Miss. He was 19 for 32 for 272 yards, with 1 TD and 1 INT. The one INT was on a desparation drive that started with only 27 seconds left at Georgia's own 16. He had three bad throws, 5 defensed, 2 blocked, and was hurried twice. The starting tackles played every snap, so Palmer didn't see the field at all today.

2005 WEEK SIX
#26 Air Force (3-1) (-12) at Columbus (1-2)
#48 Arkansas (1-2) at Georgia (1-2) (-8)
The good news for Abdul-Malik and Columbus is that this is the last time this season that they should be woefully undermatched. The bad news is that they lost 49-10. Abdul-Malik had a decent day, though. He was 11 for 21 for 231 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT on the day. He had two bad throws, 5 defensed and was hurried twice.
Brookins led Georgia to a 28-16 victory on the strength of 16 for 32 passing for 182 yards and 3 TD's. For the second week in a row, T Palmer didn't see the field. DT May performed well in teh first academic period, with no grade below C. Maybe he'll stick around.

2005 WEEK SEVEN
#45 Georgia (2-2) at #3 Florida (4-0) (-17) (TV3)
Columbus (1-3) at Macon (3-2) (-11)
Columbus was able to run very effectively against Macon: 50 carries for 282 yards and 6 TD's! Adbul-Malik was a *very* nice complement to the running game, though, going 12 for 15 for 155 yards with 0 INT's to keep several drives alive as Columbus rolled to a 44-24 win.
Brookins, Palmer, May, and the Dawgs had a bit rougher go of it, shall we say. Georgia was spanked 49-3 by Florida. Brookins was 8 for 21 for 54 yards. Palmer was on the field for 10 uneventful plays.

2005 WEEK EIGHT
Vanderbilt (0-5) at #49 Georgia (2-3) (-10)
Albany (2-4) at Columbus (2-3) (-15)
Things looked good early for Columbus, when Abdul-Malik hit a 16-yard TD pass to give them a 7-0 lead. However, things went downhill quickly from there as they fell 44-24. Abdul-Malik, nursing a bruised ribcage (probable, 1 wk) was 9 for 17 for 111 yards with 1 TD and 2 INT's.
Brookins had a much easier time of it today. In a 52-7 win, he was 12 for 19 for 163 yards with 2 TD's and 0 INT's. Palmer a little field time today at tackle. He was 1 for 4 in KRB in 10 running plays, and allowed 1 sack in 10 passing plays. He hasn't inspired much confidence so far in his limited playing time. At the end of the second grading period, May still has no grade lower than C.

2005 WEEK NINE
#43 Georgia (3-3) at #34 Auburn (4-2) (-5)
Columbus (2-4) at Savanah (4-3) (-2)
Despite the Wing-T run-first philosophy, Columbus is learning that when they put the ball in Abdul-Malik's hands, good things happen. They win 45-17 behind his 19 for 29 passing day. He threw for 236 yards, 2 TD's and 0 INT's, and is considered fully healed.
Georgia really struggled today in a 34-23 loss that wasn't nearly that close. Georgia trailed 24-0, and the Tigers coasted from there. Brookins was 13 fo 34 for 230 yards with 2 TD's and 1 INT. Palmer did not play.

WEEK TEN
#31 Kentucky (6-1) at #46 Georgia (3-4) (TV5)
Marietta (2-4) at Columbus (3-4) (-11)
Sheesh. The teams threatened to break the little scoreboard down in Columbus. Marietta prevailed 52-37 when the dust had cleared. Abdul-Malik was 16 for 33 for 223 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT, as the two teams combined for 900 total yards.
Brookins had a very good day against Kentucky, leading the Dawgs to a 37-24 win. He was 14 for 28 for 254 yards with 1 TD and 0 INT's. Once again Palmer did not play.

Both teams off.
2005 WEEK TWELVE
Augusta (5-3) (-4) at Columbus (3-5) (TV5)
#45 Georgia (4-4) (-12) at South Carolina (3-5)
Albert Brookins and stingy defense were the order of the day for UGA. Brookins was 19 for 34 for 240 yards with 2 TD's and 0 INT's in a 17-7 win.
Columbus lost 24-21 to Augusta on a last-second FG. Abdul-Malik struggled in this one: 12 for 23 for 115 yards with 0 TD's and 0 INT's.

2005 WEEK THIRTEEN
Columbus (3-6) at Valdosta (6-4) (-11)
#1 Tennessee (10-0) (-12) at #42 Georgia (5-4) (TV4)
This was an awful day for Abdul-Malik and Columbus: 5 for 17 for 57 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, and a 48-7 loss.
Georgia fared no better. The AI chose to start Bishop this week for some reason unknown to man, and he responded with an 11 for 27 performance. Yuk. Brookins didn't play. Palmer got in on 8 garbage-time plays and was 0 for 2 in KRB.
Bad week all around for the FGB's.

04-18-2004, 06:44 AM
2005 WEEK FOURTEEN
#50 Georgia (5-5) at #32 Tech (6-4) (-2) (TV4)
UCONN (4-6) at Columbus (3-7) (-4)
Columbus got a nice 34-27 win this week, although Abdul-Malik had little to do with it. he was 9 for 19 for 121 yards with 0 TD's and 2 INT on the day.
Brookins returned to start for Georgia, but today proved to be a complete embarrassment. Tech rolled to a 72-7 win, as the Dawgs only score was a kickoff return for a TD. Brookins was a dismal 5 for 19 for 38 yards with an INT. :(
Palmer had 17 garbage-time plays on the day. Nothing eventful.

Neither team maeks a bowl game, so I quick-sim to the end. Here are the final stats for the guys from this year...
QB Darren Abdul-Malik, Columbus
126 for 240, 1646 yards, 7 TD's, 10 INT's, 111.3 rating, 24 stokes
QB Albert Brookins, Georgia
114 for 234, 1599 yards, 13 TD's, 5 INT's, 120.1 rating, 29 stokes, SEC All-Academic QB
T Kevin Palmer, Georgia
6 games played, 0 starts, 1 for 6 KRB, 2 sacks allowed, 37 pass plays, 39 run plays. He did, however, remain eligible, which is good considering his 5 asp and 15 int.
DT Doug May, Georgia
Academic probation. Got his GPA up to 2.53, with no grade lower than C+. Maybe he'll stay.
Georgia signed the #384 QB in the country, Ken Ligon out of Colquitt County High (home of Ray Goff). They also signed a DT and T, but neither should threaten May or Palmer for playing time.

Georgia (0-0) (-2) at NC State (0-0)

In Georgia's game, QB Albert Brookins was instrumental in engineering a 21-point fourth quarter to give the Dawgs a 35-24 win. He threw two TD passes in the decisive quarter, and was 16 for 29 for 226 yards with 0 INT's on the day. In the Columbus game, QB Darren Abdul-Malik is the only semi-bright spot in a dismal day. He is 12 for 25 for 181 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT in a 52-7 blowout loss.
QB Albert Brookins and company didn't fare much better down in Baton Rouge. Brookins was 11 for 25 for 161 yards with 2 TD's and 1 INT, DT Doug May only had one tackle and 1 hurry, and T Kelvin Palmer only was on the field for two uneventful (at least or him) pass plays.
