I was looking at the new release section and saw that "Freaks and Geek" a TV show from 1999 that was canceled after 12 episodes was comming out on DVD. The 6-DVD pack contains the entire 18 episodes that were filmed and includes the episodes that never aired. Suggested retail $69.99.

I have to woder what they will not put out on DVD now days. Or, better yet, just exactly what it costs to make a DVD collection? Also,6-DVDs for 12 episodes aired, you have to wonder what is up with that? Just how much of a following can a show have that never made it to midseason(13).

Seems like a huge waste of shelf space to me.

I guess comming next from ABC will be the 10-DVD pack for Manimal!!!

Freaks and Geeks actually had a decent following, although not enough to justify keeping it.

So that doesn't frighten me nearly as badly as Jem and the Holograms on DVD...

This show was REALLY good. Too bad nobody watched it tho. I remember watching a bunch of them when it got burned off during the summer, and I was pissed it got cancelled.

Agreed. It was an excellent show. Great writing, acting, all of it. It really captured the "feel" of being a geek in highschool. The scenes where they talked about and played Dungeons & Dragons were fantastic.

Definitely a show worthy of DVD-hood. I have a bunch of eps. on tape. I figure I'll pick up the DVDs when the price comes down a bit.

Agreed on the price thing. $50 bucks is a bit more than I want to pay for a DVD, even if it is the "whole series." Maybe Ill rent it or something.

Airwolf

Mr Rogers(this is something that should be made into dvd somehow)

Hogan's Heros!

Hogan's Heros

Sledge Hammer Season 1 is being released this Summer (supposedly).

MST3k is already available in 5 boxsets or in 10 single movie editions.

Hogan's Heroes is supposedly being worked on for a release later this year.

yea i have the mst3k sets.. but the movie selection aren't exactly some of the greater ones they could have picked..

I've heard the sledge hammer rumors myself. i'd probably pre order it if it came to be true :)

The problem with MST3K and video releases were the movie clearances. They didn't secure the rights to a video release when they made the shows, and some of the companies have refused to make reasonable deals on the backend. There isn't much you can do about those issues at this point.

Freaks and Geeks has a following that has continued to grow since the show got cancelled. Thousands of people went to freaksandgeeks.com and signed a petition so that it would be released on dvd, and the creators of the show put a lot of work in making it a really complete package for the fans. I think there is actually a limited edition 8 dvd set, bigger than the one you mentioned, with two additonal discs comprised entirely of special features. That show was sweet, so I think it's awesome.

Actually I recently received the Freaks and Geeks DVD set as a gift and as a fan of the show it's definitly worth it. You get all the episodes plus at least one commentary for each, although many have two. There's deleted scenes for each episodes and a bunch of other special features too, like cast auditions. Watching this show again, in the right order, makes me like it even more. I would catch it whenever it was on NBC or eventually ABC Family and glad I can see all these episodes now. In fact, it's probably one of my favorite shows of all-time, although that's on the basis it never really went downhill because there were only 18 episodes.

Tragically, two things I really want on DVD don't seem like they are ever coming out:

Season 2 of Twin Peaks (Season 1 was released a long time ago)
Hoop Dreams

That is Truly Outrageous!

No worries.. I'll kick my own ass for even knowing anything about Jem and the Holograms.

On a different topic, I'd love a "Space Above and Beyond" set...

You'd be surprised how well midseason canceled DVD sets can do. The show Firefly was canceled in midseason in late 2002 after they only made 13 episodes(and only aired 10 or less), yet so many people bought the DVDs they are gonna make a full budgeted hollywood movie about it. A movie about a show that was canceled midway through the first season, go figure. Its all because the show was good/different enough to get a good following, but Fox was too impatient to give the show time to attract more viewers.

Fox did the same thing with the show Wonderfalls. Wonderfalls this year got great reviews from the critics, but Fox canned it after a few weeks because of not too hot ratings. Fox is just incredibly impatient. I don't recall if Freaks and Geeks was on Fox, but I do remember it getting great reviews.

That was a horrible show, this "Space Above and Beyond." Very strange. Sort of wanted to be Starship Troopers aka 90210 in Space, but lacked the satirical nature of Starship Troopers that made it the great film it was.

Two movies I'm waiting for on DVD (and have been a while)

Moving - The Richard Pryor one where they move from New Jersey to Boise, Idaho
and
Orgazmo - Come on, Trey and Matt's college project movie "Cannibal: The Musical" made it to DVD, how come this one hasn't yet either?

There was an article in a local paper about the F&G DVD release basically saying it was so expensive because they had to add an extra $10/set just to secure the rights to use the original music.

I guess a big problem with a lot of old shows is that they didn't negotiate video rights on the music when they originally used it and now a lot of that music has become "classic" and adds too much to the price. They mentioned a couple series (I think The Shield was one) actually stripped out the original music and replaced it with cheaper alternatives in the DVD box set. A couple examples they gave of shows that will probably never be released on DVD entirely because of music licensing issues are Miami Vice and WKRP Cincinatti.

There's also a demographic question. A sitcom watched by millions and millions because it is sandwiched between two bigger shows on a major network may not seel nearly as well as a smart, well done show in a bad time slot when the network gave it very little chance to develop a community and a fanbase.

If, say, a million fans of a series are rabid, love it, and are interested in a DVD, even though it has low viewership, that's a lot better than a show with a large viewership but low demand for the DVD. Some of the best selling shows on DVD (Babylon 5, Buffy, Farscape, Sports Night) are clever shows that suffered through bad timeslots or smaller numbers of viewers despite being known as cleaver and witty and such. None of those shows had the fanbse, in terms of sheer numbers, of an ER or a Law and Order, but the DVD's sell very well.

It's just another way networks make money. It's free syndication without having to qualify.

Anytime someone answers something like this to a lot of questions (why do networks do that, why do companies release this, why is this game made), the implication is always that they want to make money. All busniesses do, it's the nature of business. That simply begs the question.

Why does the company beleive that this will sell enough to make money? That's the question.

I answered why they think they can make money in the next sentence. Add to that the feedback a network will receive from a show with a cult following and it is a pretty simple equation.

That show Wunderfalls is already cancelled? Is this the show where the girl talks to God through inanimate objects? It seems like every other commercial on Fox was for this show. How many episodes aired? Damn, they don't mess around.

Since the subject of commercials came up, did naybody see the nasty looking preview for Nip / Tuck? I have never watched the show, but the preview was unsettleing.

Timeline....
Space above and Beyond 1995-1996

Starship Troopers 1997
Starship Troopers 2 2004

Not sure if you can rip off a show that does not air for another 2 years into the future Mr. Peabody. :D

Yup it was, and no they sure don't mess around. Tim Minear, the creator of the show, was also one of the creating forces for Firefly. So that makes two well recieved shows in a row that hes seen tanked by Fox. Don't know if Wonderfalls will get the same DVD following as Firefly if it goes to DVD. I saw a couple of Wonderfalls episodes, and I agree with the critics that it had a lot of potential.

Never thought of that, but it makes sense. Miami Vice and WKRP would sell well...too bad they would have those issues though.

I loved Sledge Hammer. Maybe they could bring Max Headroom to DVD too.

And Freaks & Geeks was a damn funny show, but I didn't find that out until it was canceled, unfortunately. It was a show that could have been marketed much, much better (oh, and Linda Cardellini wasn't a bad reason to watch it, either).
