If this movie had been made 40 years ago, we'd have seen it on Mystery Science Theater 3000. My wife is making me watch it, but it's actually pretty good from a UIC standpoint.

I mean, look...it stars John Schneider - what made you think it would be anything but awful?

The funny part is, the closest thing to a plot is the whole "woman geologist (or whatever she is) proves boss wrong" angle...except any potental for a plotline was ruined by the fact that she first offered her boss a shred of proof of her theory approximately 3 minutes before the first earthquake happened - and they tried to act like the guy screwed up by not following her advice and warning the West Coast to evacuate. Exactly how far were people supposed to get in 3 minutes?!

I'd rather watch Reagan - The Sodomy Years, starring James Carville...but hey, I'm married and the wife is close to going into labor, so I'm not in the best position here.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought this. I am actually waiting for John Schneider to pull Margot Kidder out of a burried car at some point during the movie.

I'm surprised at how bad the acting is. I always thought that Beau Bridges and Fred Ward were decent actors.

I think Fred Ward has had the luck of having some roles that suited his talents well, which is different than being a decent actor.

I'm not sure I'd give Beau Bridges even that much credit.

My wife, who usually loves natural disaster movies no matter how bad, summed last night's installment up this way -- "John Schneider was worse in this than he was in "Night of the Twisters." Trust me folks, that is not a ringing endorsement.

Good God this movie is awful. They should have just spliced Bruce Willis' part from Armaggedon into this movie, and he could have played Roy. Who is the guy who plays his son - he looks very familiar, but I can't place him.

'10.5' Draws 20.4 Million Viewers for NBC




Maybe there's a secret desire among television viewers to see California crumble in an earthquake.

The first part of the NBC miniseries, "10.5," was seen by 20.4 million viewers on Sunday night, the most popular movie on NBC in five years, according to Nielsen Media Research.

The NBC tale, to conclude Monday night, starred Kim Delaney and Beau Bridges in a mythical look at California's fate during an epochal earthquake.


The movie did particularly well among the affected area's neighbors. The top-rated cities for "10.5" were Seattle, Wash.; Las Vegas and Portland, Ore., according to Nielsen Media Research.


The last NBC movie to do as well in the ratings was the second part of "Noah's Ark" in May 1999.

This isn't a novel concept - disaster movies always do well. I don't recall any of the 70's movies being particularly well-written or acted, either.

Plus, I was cheering when LA Island was created. I was just hoping they'd attach a few tugboats to it and haul it off to South America.

Oddly, when super-geologist Kim Delaney was showing her outlandish predictions of what was going to happen if her "superfault" theory was correct, it included the entire west coast (including the Baja peninsula) falling into the ocean.

Was that before or after her milli-second romance with her sidekick, when out of the blue, she reached over and kissed him? Such depth to that relationship - reminded me of When Harry Met Sally. You could just see it building over the 2 or 3 seconds right before she planted one on his lips.

And as a former Director of FEMA, Roy sure didn't know his ass from a hole in the ground. Although oddly enough, that's precisely where it ended up.

The son was played by Ivan Sergei, who most notably was one of the stars of Jack and Jill which was on the WB or UPN I think a couple years back.

I love disaster movies personally, mainly because the storylines are so ridiculous and full of holes. This one was no exception. One of my favorites was when they dropped Kim Delaney and her partner at the evacuation camp in Barstow to set up the command center there even though minutes earlier she had said that that area needed to be evacuated. I also love that the fault stopped right before swallowing them up-like God had stepped in and protected the two who had saved so many other lives. Then there's the apparant time travel to get all six warheads in place in less than 24 hours, though Fred Ward got his just rewards for that with the entirely laughable scene where he was pinned by the nuclear warhead.

I actually liked Beau Bridges as the President and Kim Delaney as the geologist. The rest though...and for the record Night of the Twisters was worse than this movie. :) Oh anyone catch John Schneider's character's first name? It was Clark, as in Clark Kent, who he's the father to in Smallville. That was a nice tip of the hat.

Overall it was mindless fun and well worth watching. Not every enjoyable movie needs to be a well-acted tour de force.

I also like how at the end of the movie when the island parted...

You could see people on other island... Which you have to be within a few miles.

Then when they should the US as a whole, it looked to be about a 50 mile gap in between the two. So that I thought was pretty stupid.

Don't forget the "Indiana Jones camera trick" when the car that John Scheneider and his daughter was in was filling with dirt. Before the daughter (who turned from detached "high-maintenance queen" to expert tracker in the first hour of the movie) could get out of the car on the first camera angle, the car had filled in about 70% with dirt. Then, when they panned to the second angle, her side of the car was nearly empty of dirt. It reminded me of the closing door in the openining seen of Raiders where the door goes from 70% closed to 50% to 80% to 60% while Harrison Ford scoots through.

And, don't forget the biggest tribute in this movie. The tribute to Duke of Hazzard when Luke Duke (err, John Schneider) is forced to leave the sinking car via the front seat window ;)

'Cause I gotta tell you, I'm not sure if it was her or the assistant, but if I had been there, I would suffocated them both to keep from hearing that wretched whining/sobbing things she/they were doing.
