Much research has been done on the subject, and the fact is nobody knows.

Well as the story goes, the inventor of this unique snack had his family and friends test taste them. He knew right away that he had a product that would make him rich. Since the cookie is in that shape of an O and gold comes from the mineral ore, he decided to name his creation "oreo's" which has since dropped the apostrophe and now these tasty cookies are affectionately known as "oreos".

Actually, the creator of the famous sandwich cookies was a Greek immigrant to the U.S. He envisioned a dessert made of two chocolate cookies surrounding "a mountain of icing". To name his creation, he took the Greek word for mountain: "Oros". The marketing department of Nabisco didn't want to directly name the cookie after a foreign word, so they added an "e" to the middle of the word. Hence, "Oreos".

This is so very close. Of course to go with the fact that it needs one different fact to be different, the different fact is this. When the cookie was first made, it was shaped like a mountain. Now after numerous tests, it was transformed into its current state, but its name was still drawn from its first shape. That and the fact that after eating two bags and laying on your back your stomach will look like a mountain.

The Afoci got nothing.
"Oreo" is actually the compression of an acronym. At the time Oreo cookies were introduced, Nabisco was in neck-and-neck competition with another snack company called "The Owen Russ Company." One day, a Nabisco executive spotted an Owen Russ salesman standing at a bus stop eating some Nabisco cookies. The Nabisco executive relayed the sighting to his colleagues, and they named their next cookie "Oreo" which comes from "Owen Russ Enjoys Ours."

Just walked by the car up on cement blocks. Undid the tiedown that holds the door shut and fired up the generator so the computer should work soon.
I got nothing.
