PANAMA CITY, Fla. - A woman with a history of mental problems rear-ended a school bus twice and fled, then was killed in a head-on collision minutes later, authorities said.
Lori A. Steele, 35, died Monday when her car flipped and she was thrown from the vehicle, Bay County Deputy Tom Ehlers said.
Steele was pulled over earlier Monday after she rear-ended a school bus. No children were on the bus and nobody was injured. She then struck the bus again and drove away at 90 mph, police said.
In the collision a few minutes later, the driver of the other car suffered minor injuries, authorities said.
Steele had been committed three times since August under the Baker Act, which allows police to take custody of people they believe might harm themselves, Gulf County Sheriff's Maj. Joe Nugent said.
Authorities also said Steele's apartment had flooded Monday morning and her apartment manager had called police, but Steele fled before deputies arrived.
Ehlers said that when he pulled Steele over, he had noticed that she had a three turtles in her car, one on her lap. One turtle died in the collision and the other two weren't found, authorities said.
