This contest is to predict the final table results at the upcoming World Series of Poker main event, the $10,000 NL Hold'em tournament.

Each entry will contain 9 names, ranked in order of confidence from 1 through 9, 1 being the higest, you will earn points based on how high each player finishes, with bonus points awarded for each person you pick that makes the final table and for picking the winner. Scoring will be weighted based on confidence as well. A perfect entry last year would have looked like this:

1. Chris Moneymaker
2. Sam Farha
3. Dan Harrington
4. Jason Lester
5. Tomer Benvenisti
6. Amir Vahedi
7. Young Pak
8. David Grey
9. David Snyder

For reference, thread on the odds of winning for many of the expected competitors can be found here: http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/~fof/forums/showthread.php?t=24711

Scoring:

A player must make the money to qualify for any points. 1 point is given for each person that player outlasts after he makes the money, multiplied by your ranking of that player. A bonus of 50 points*your ranking factor is given for each player you choose that actually does make the final table, and, if you pick the winner, 200 points * your ranking factor is awarded.

PM Entries to me. The deadline for entry is end of day(midnight) Friday, May 21st.

Here's a sample entry and sample scoring that will hopefully clarify everything.

SAMPLE ENTRY(note, the results are fake and are just given to show the different scenarios):

1. Chris Moneymaker
2. Scotty Nguyen
3. Phil Hellmuth
4. Howard Lederer
5. Phil Ivey
6. Gus Hansen
7. Dutch Boyd
8. Johnny Chan
9. Erik Seidel

For this example, lets say 100 players are paid in the WSOP. In this example, Moneymaker, Hellmuth, Lederer, Hansen, Boyd, and Seidel do not make the top 100, and are thus worth 0 points each.

Chan finishes 45th, outlasting 55 players. Ranked 8th, his factor is 2, he is worth 110 points.

Ivey finishes 8th, making the final table. He outlasts 92 players, and has a factor of 5 since he was ranked 5th in this entry. He is worth 460 points for his finish, and a bonus of 250 points(50 * 5) for making the final table for a total value of 960 points.

Scotty Nguyen wins the whole thing. The multiplication factor is 8 since he is rated 2nd. He outlasts 99 others, giving him 792 points for that, plus 400 for making the final table, plus another 1600 for winning the entire tournament, making him worth a massive 2792 points.

Your total score with this entry would be 3862.

Don't hesitate to ask questions if anything needs clarifying!

Keep this thread under wraps ;)

Since ESPN will be running 22 weeks of the WSOP (Preliminary Tournaments and the Big One alike..) I want to try to avoid spoilers. No shot in hell, of course. ;)

BTW, I wonder if all they're going to be showing is the NL Texas Holdem prelim tournaments, or if they're going to show the Stud, Horse, and Omaha tournaments as well. If you think folks were confused with the rules for NL Hold Em, wait till they get a load of Omaha H/L ;)

9. David Snyder

If I'm not mistaken, that should be "David Singer"

David Singer is correct, MJ4H, and good point Fozzie, I know a lot of people don't want to know what happened until the televised event.

I'll be following on the net as close to live as possible(at least during the work day), but i'll make sure to post the results in clearly marked threads w/ no hints as to the actual outcomes in the title names, so those that don't want to know the results until TV time will not be force fed the info by myself.

With the popularity that poker has gained I suspect it will be very hard this year to shield yourself from finding out in advance who is the winner.

I don't imagine split pot games will carry nearly the same level of excitement on TV. Imagine Vince Van Patten... "and they're all in on the flop, here comes the turn, the suspense is building, here's the river, it's the jack of diamonds! We've got a split pot!"

I'd send my picks in now, but I'm afraid that some of my players might get injured before the deadline. :D

Ok, so do I get extra points if Ben Affleck makes the final table? :)

If you listed Affleck as one of your picks you do!

Can't be any more confusing than the rules to scoring on this contest. :)

Yeah, the exact scoring is a bit complicated, hopefully that doesn't prevent anyone from entering. Just understanding that you get points for how high people finish, and a bonus for making the final table, and an extra bonus for picking the winner, and that your picks are weighted, so your top pick counts for more than your 9th pick, is hopefully good enough. :)

FWIW, I have PM'd my picks to Subby(the first person to PM me his picks) for accountability's sake.

bumpity bump

A few people have submitted lists with 10 names. My understanding is that the "final day" they always start with the last 9 competitors. While the last 10 play at one table the night before until they are down to 9. That makes the 'proper' final table a bit confusing, but I am referring to the 9 participants that start on the final day.

For those that submitted 10 names, I'm just taking the the first 9. Anyone is free to amend/send new lists though, so if that affects who you picked feel free to re-send.

bumping this again. Deadline is ~friday night midnight.

Only 8 entries so far:

radii
Delebar
Subby
albionmoonlight
corbes
quiksand
hoopsguy
shorty3281

I'm hoping for more participation than just this with all of the poker discussion that goes on around here.

Good variety in the choices so far, no one has been picked in all 8 entries(though one person has been picked in 7 of the 8 entries).

I'll try to remember to submit my final 9 when I get home tonight. Is there a list somewhere out there showing who's already registered for the tourney?

That's as good as I've got off the top of my head. It shows the odds for most of the top names. I can't really do any more surfing for things like this at work so I don't know if there is a more complete list of names out there. :)

Here is a list of the standings for Player of the Year over at cardplayer.com:

http://www.cardplayer.com/player_of_the_year/

499 names there for you, good luck with the other 1500 ... guessing Moneymaker and Varkoni (sp?) weren't on the list when they took it down.

Another bump. I have entries from:

radii

Subby
albionmoonlight
corbes
quiksand
hoopsguy
shorty3281

Up to 11 people, any more poker players around to enter? I'll try a nighttime bump tonight just in case there's a small crowd that's missing this as well.
