View Full Version : OT-Front Project TV
I'm getting ready to remodel my home theater and replace my bigscreen with a front projection TV. Something about a 120" TV just seems too good to resist... :D
Anyway, I've been doing a little reading over at avsforum.com and was curious if anyone here had a projector and what their experience with them were like.
Thanks

A dedicated theater... lucky you!
avsforum is good... don't forget to read up and get advice from www.hometheaterforum.com (http://www.hometheaterforum.com)
I don't have one of my own but have auditioned high-end CRT, DLP and LCD front projectors, the cheapest being $22k CDN. If I had the coin and the space, I'd definitely go with DLP.
I'm actually leaning towards DLP, but I hear that there's a possibility of seeing "rainbows" with them and I want to check one out before I spend the cash. I'll probably have to find a store that will let me demo it in my home for a couple days or somebody with a decent return policy.
Thanks for the link to hometheaterforum.com, I'll have to check them out as well.

I bought a DLP set in March. I have never seen this rainbow phenomenon. To me it seems like much myth.
As I have documented elsewhere (and I think this applies to HDTVs in general, but I know it applies to Samsung DLP's) be prepared for standard def stuff to look worse on your new tv than it did on your old set, especially if you have digital cable or satellite.
The Samsung DLP's also have a "color wheel" which is constantly spinning as you watch tv. When looking in the store, be aware that you are likely being bombarded by sound. Unless you watch tv at home with very low volume, the hum of the spinning wheel will be noticeable.

I'm actually one who is especially sensitive to the rainbow effect. I bought the Optoma H30 several months ago, but even with that faster color wheel, I saw rainbows. No one else who was in the audience ever saw a single rainbow, so I'm clearly in the minority. I loved the DLP image, but found the rainbows too distracting. It made a few movies unwatchable (black and white with subtitles with colors all over the screen is no fun).
Once I move in August, I'm setting up a new room with either the L500U or Z2 (unless something better comes along).
What projector are you looking at?
