HOLY FUCKING CRAP!

After Duncan hits with .4 left to take the lead by one, who thought Derek Fisher would hit a buzzer beater to win???

Best shot of the year by the most unexpected (yet not surprising) player.

UNBELIEVABLE!

I haven't seen Fisher's shot yet, but...

Outside of Kobe and Shaq, I think Derek Fisher is the most likely guy to hit a game-winner. I think he's even more likely than Shaq, since Shaq's game is mainly under the basket. No, Derek Fisher isn't a great NBA player, but he seems to keep a level head, and with the exception of this season, he's an excellent three-point shooter, which means that he can make an outside shot when needed. Now that Robert Horry is wearing the opponent's uniform, I think Fisher really is the second-best option for a last-second shot, behind Kobe Bryant.

...

Okay, I just saw the shot, and while it had a bit of a James Forrest look to it, I certainly wouldn't want anyone else in a Lakers uniform except Kobe to take a shot like that.

And I would hope that at least SOMEBODY else on this forum would know what I mean with the James Forrest reference. :)

I was surprised that Horry wasn't even on the floor for the Spurs' final shot. I mean, sure, the play was going to be run for Duncan but I'd want Horry out there in case Duncan needed to dish.

Now I know he probably would not have been covering Fisher, but why was Bowen not on the court for that last play?

How is it possible for a human being to jump, catch and shoot a basket in .04 seconds?

It seems ridiculous to me.

Then again, so is the NBA.

There is no question about whether or not the ball left his hand in time. I guess if you really wanted to argue something you could argue whether or not the clock started right when the ball hit his hand, but that would be tough to prove. It looked good to me.

Vince
05-14-2004, 12:10 AM
Yeah, prime - they're debating whether or not the clock was started on time. I think they know that it won't get overturned, but they are making the effort...token gesture I guess.

They're saying on SportsCenter that the Spurs have filed a protest, saying that the clock wasn't started soon enough...

Anyone notice how MrBug has crawled out of the woodwork and bumped every NBA playoff thread on the board? ;)

I thought it was impossible to catch and shoot with anything less than 6 tenths of a second left... but I suppose the laws of physics are excepted in the case of the Lakers.

I'm sure the league wants to avoid a San Antonio - Indiana finals like the plague...

MrBug708

One can hope eh Jeeber? Too bad the Mav's aren't there so The West Coast can take down Texas, one at a time :)

Isn't the official rule that if the clock is at .3 or less then only a tip is legal since it wouldn't be possible to catch in shoot that much time?

Guess that extra .1 makes a world of difference...

Duncan's shot went through the hoop with .7 so that .1 won't make much difference.

San Antonio is basically filing a protest against their own timekeeper? Or does the NBA appoint a "neutral" timekeeper for playoff games?

I'm only rooting for the Spurs because I detest the Lakers. But usually if there's a Texas team still in the playoffs I'll root for them.

And no, that isn't the same as rooting for the Aggies. That's personal...

San Antonio is basically filing a protest against their own timekeeper? Or does the NBA appoint a "neutral" timekeeper for playoff games?

What they were saying on SportsCenter is that one of the refs starts the clock with a little button that he carries or something. So in the unlikely event that the Spurs win their protest, the only thing that would happen is that they would get an appology from the league and the ref would get reprimanded...

Why should such language be used to start a thread, then only to have more profanity used for comments.

This is a bunch of wasted words if you ask me. Are you asking me?

I believe other words could have been used.

Okay. I am getting out.

This is why I hate basketball. I mean, in football if a team scores a touchdown and goes up 2 with :01 second to go and the other team calls timeout, do they start on the 20 yard line so they can kick a field goal? Nope. It makes no sense.

I was thinking that .4 seconds was too little time, but the replay clearly showed the clock starting when the ball reached Fisher's hands (it starts when the ball is touched, not inbounded), and he clearly got it out before the clock hit 00. How he managed to get an ACCURATE shot off under those conditions amazes me. Has to be one of the greatest clutch shots of all time.

But I'm with Afoci here. Giving the other team the ball at the halfcourt line after a timeout is just ludicrous. Once upon a time, I thought you had to inbound and then call timeout to get the ball in the other end. Yet one more reason to hate the NBA...

It had nothing to do with this game, but back in my playing days, from 4th grade on up, I have been on the losing end of close games where a team got to travel half the court for free because they have a time out. Over time, I have felt that that takes the game out of the players hands in some sense and I have just grown to dislike numerous things about it.

Bah, had you won you'd think the opposite. The rule itself is fine but when you lose by it then it sucks.

Lakers fans love it this morning...Spurs fans not so much.

I often wonder, if Barry Bonds were to play on the Lakers, would heads explode all over the nation because of the concentration of hatred some would have for such an entity?

Geez. Yea, I am sure the timekeeper thought during those .4 seconds. Well, this is really taking .5 or .6 seconds here, but let me skim off a .1 of a second because we really don't want the Spurs in the finals.

It was a freaking awesome shot. How people can ignore a truely amazing athletic feat because they are blinded by hatred I will never know. You would think a sports fan, unless their team was the one on the recieving end, could appreciate a great event. I guess not.

Great, there is nothing like a Laker playoff win. All of the sudden, all the "Laker fans" (read bandwagon fans) start wearing jerseys and flying flags off of their cars. I don't see half of these jerseys or flags during the regular season or after playoffs losses. Its amazing how fans come out of the woodwork for southern california teams when they are playing good and how they disappear when the teams lose.
