Hey man, I'm moving down to Chucktown (not sure how long I can do that ghetto slang thing) in 3 weeks and I'm just wondering what there is to do down there? I'm living downtown, so how long does it take to get out of there in the morning and get to work in North Charleston? Any place I need to hit? Anything I need to know about the town? What are the cable and internet rates? Will I be a lonely liberal?

Jestine's Kitchen (In Charleston);
The Old Post Office (On Edisto Island) and get the grits.

Both very yummy.

Edisto is one of the last barrier islands in the area that has not be infested by the developers. Worth seeing if you are into that sort of thing.

If you're living downtown, getting to North Charleston will take you probably 30-45 min. each morning...traffic is pretty crazy.

Foodwise, you're in luck: there are a ton of great eateries about, although few are cheap. I actually wasn't as impressed with Jestine's as albionmoonlight, although as far as "down-home" eating goes it's decent. The South End Brewery has great local brew and cooked beast. Tommie Condon's, while touristy, is a great pub to hang out in.

The great thing about being downtown is being able to walk around to all the bars and clubs (if you're into that scene). Charleston is very dressy-dressy when it comes to their scene, so it's standard to see scads of beautiful girls in their high-end dresses. You'll also be near the Battery, which is a lovely place to hang out.

Not sure about cable (ours is free, somehow), and internet is the same as anywhere. While liberalism is not as entrenched as conservativism (this is the old south, and I mean that in most every sense of the word), you'll be near the College of Charleston, which helps somewhat.

Other things to know:
Traffic is bad. There are accidents every day, and things can get pretty hairy. Always be alert.
Those kids running around in military uniforms are almost always from The Citadel, unless they're wearing sailor duds.
60 Minutes did a story almost a year ago about how Charleston's port is poorly defended in the event of an Al Qaeda attack (if you watch the Sopranos, last week you saw part of the report (with an edit to talk about Jersey)). So that's something to keep in mind. ;)
Minor league ballgames at The Joe (Charleston River Dogs, a single-A club) are a lot of fun, and the park is cheap and lovely.
