I was really enjoying this season's Sopranos, until last night. I'm sorry, but that self-indulgent, piece of crap 20 minute dream sequence has no place in that show. I suppose if I felt inclined, I could study the thing over and over again 4 or 5 times and figure out what all the symbology was so I could then "rightfully" feel "in awe" of David Chase and his staff, but who has the time or inclination? Just a might bit too over the top for me. I'll watch again next week, but any more crap like that and I'm liable to be through with it.

Well I definitely cant say I would stop watching the show if they did another dream sequence but that first one was awful.

To me it seemed like the dream made it clear to Tony that his cousin Tony is making life difficult, he hates the gray haired mobster(cant remember his name) and he loves his wife. Other than that I have no idea why we had to spend 19 minutes watching that crap.

Kinda interesting that Artie was the only live person in the car during the dream though.

Never watched it. Never will.

My firm belief is that no show can possibly go beyond 3 seasons on TV without significantly dropping in quality. Virtually all my favorite shows were cancelled/ended before they were over the hill. I think it's always better to be left wanting more than to have too much.

Ah, I loved the dream sequence. It points to Tony losing his grip. The falling teeth, the bullets melting in his hand - all signs of impotence. Especially since a vast majority of the people in his dream were dead. This season has been about Tony losing control and coming to terms with what he's done and how unloved he really is. The dream episode really helped capture it.

Let me take a stab at it - is his name...Tony? :p

I agree with everything you say. But was it really necessary for this to be 20 minutes long, with only 2 more episodes to go in a season, when we wont get the next season until January 2006 at the earliest? It started out great, but he bangs a hooker and then we have to spend 20 minutes to realize that him and Carm should really be together.

I was reading another board and someone had an interesting take on the sequence. He felt that when it was written/shot, it was when this was supposed to be the last season, and this would have been the wrap-up as he was dying (or right before). Also mentioned that they adapted in the Tony B. aspect to make it applicable in the context.

Well, I saw it as an interesting set up. If it was like 10 minutes long or 5 minutes it wouldn't have the same impact. Having it as long as it was, showed the downward spiral Tony was on... even in his dreams.

And I really don't think it matters that there are only 2 more episodes in the season. The Carmine/Sack gang war is going to be the cliffhanger at the end of this season. They have to build up to it next episode... with Tony S going further off the deep edge (and perhaps Tony B getting wacked). Then the last episode is when full fledged war breaks out, I think.

I too thought that it was great. I love the dream sequences. This is just different TV than people are used to. From people I talked to today I'm getting the feeling that you either love it or hate.......no in-between

Here here.

This show has always been about Tony Sopranos psyche as much as it's been about the mob, guns, sex or anything else. I have loved this season for the way they've focused on Tony. I do miss the older more established characters and the comradarie of the crew but what it comes down to is that the show is about Tony and his mind. I tend to look at it as if i'm watching an 80 hour movie rather than a bunch of TV Episodes, if that makes any sense.

The last time Tony had extended weird dream sequences.....he knew Pussy was a rat and had to get rid of him.....I think this is a sign that he may have to get rid of Tony B.....

Kinda interesting that Artie was the only live person in the car during the dream though.

I think the reason Artie was in the dream so much is because Tony wants to lead a normal life like Artie. Much of his dream alluded to the fact that subconsciously he wants to go straight i.e. going with a strong women who wouldn't take his crap, unlike Carmela (Charmaine), talking to his old football coach about becoming a coach himself. The other reason for this has been his mishandling of certain situations this season for example: Feech being sent back to prison instead of being killed, allowing Tony B. to stay alive after he knew he had something to do with Johnny Peeps murder, and also allowing Chrissy to stay alive after coming into his club firing a gun. Maybe I'm wrong and Tony has a plan, but either way it should make for an interesting finale.

MKy gut reaction is that Artie is an informant and may not be alive much longer.

Ok, after last week's debacle, was last night's episode great, or what? I was back in "please don't let it be 10pm" mode. Great, great stuff.

Very good episode indeed. I didnt want it to be 10 even though I watch Deadwood. That family dinner was kinda weird with everyone sitting around in silence.

Very good episode. Now we have a good old fashioned mob war to look forward too. I felt like chearing when Tony told Johnny Sac to F-off.

I really liked the episode too. One thing though, if they had suveilance on her club and rely'ed on her so heavily, wouldn't they have been following her too? Especially since she said Christopher would talk. You would think they'd have agents all over her/her apartment.

No, cause if Chrissy would have refused to join the program, they couldn't haul him in anyway and it would have blown the case. Her mistake is not refusing to talk and getting a lawyer the very first time she got busted.
