Riight.
WNBA washout to coach basketball minor leaguers (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/news/story?id=1803574&partnersite=espn)

Apparently, the owner is a woman. So I see the impluse. But I guess no other woman took her seriously, so she went after a young one. But maybe she'd have been better just getting the girl a date with one of the washouts? I mean, what veteran will take her seriously? What young guy will take her seriously?

"You know, when I was in college." Or my personal favorite, "When I washed out of draft camp in the WNBA..."

But hey, they got their headline. She's in the record books. Now people will promptly forget - until she marries one of her players or something or better - someone else in the league.

NASHVILLE RHYTHM OWNER APPOINTS FIRST FEMALE HEAD COACH OF A MEN'S BASKETBALL FRANCHISE
ABA's Anthony makes history by choosing former Vanderbilt standout McElhiney for top job

NASHVILLE, TENN. - In an unprecedented move in the world of professional sports, the American Basketball Association's (ABA) Nashville Rhythm basketball team owner, Sally Anthony, has named a woman to take the team's top coaching position.

Ashley McElhiney, will become the first female head coach of a men's professional basketball team. She joins one of only a handful of female coaches of men's teams in any sport throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Anthony said the groundbreaking decision was an easy one after looking at McElhiney's basketball resume.

McElhiney, a Tennessee native, was an All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) college performer for the Vanderbilt Commodores in 2002 and 2003, won Vanderbilt's most outstanding defensive player award three years in a row, and was named to Vanderbilt's All Century team.

"This is an incredible opportunity for me on so many levels," McElhiney said. "I'm thrilled to be a part of building this team from the ground up. I'm also grateful to Sally for letting me take the reigns in what has, to date, been uncharted water for a female coach."

As basketball goes, McElhiney is very familiar with the territory.

During her career with Vanderbilt, McElhiney dished out 683 assists and led the entire SEC in assists as a sophomore. She was a second team all-SEC selection as a junior, made the list of ESPN's top five point guards in the nation and was a member of the Gold Medal winning 2001 U.S. World University Games team. As a senior, she was named to the AP All-SEC Team, the Women's College Hoops All-American Team and was even awarded the Nashville Kiwanis Club's Female Athlete Award. In 2003, McElhiney was a third-round draft pick of the WNBA's Indiana Fever and the 35th player taken overall.

"Ashley brings a tremendous work ethic, playing experience and a dynamic personality to the ABA," Anthony said. "That's what this team needs and that's what the ABA needs. I'm excited to watch her take both by storm."

Anthony has long been an outspoken pioneer, and an entrepreneur, when it comes to opportunities for women in sports, entertainment and business. One of only four female ABA owners, Anthony says McElhiney's hiring can be a stepping stone and an entrŽe into the NBA for female coaches.

"I've said from day one that my goal was not only to put a competitive team on the floor, but to give qualified females opportunities they are not normally afforded," Anthony said. "Ultimately, I think the Nashville Rhythm, and the ABA as a whole, can be a stepping stone for a qualified woman to coach in the NBA. If women like Carly Fiorina can successfully lead companies like Hewlett Packard, I think it's pretty clear Cheryl Miller or Nancy Lieberman could have phenomenal success leading an NBA team."

In a news conference Monday, May 17, Anthony also announced the name of the new Nashville ABA franchise would be the Nashville Rhythm after the public was invited to weigh-in with suggestions as part of a recent promotional contest. The Nashville Rhythm's home court will be Allen Arena at Lipscomb University.

The team recently announced its first free agent camp which will take place at Lipscomb Saturday, June 26, 2004 and will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost for each player to participate will be $125. Visit www.NashvilleRhythm.com for more details.

In February 2004, a group led by pop/rock artist Sally Anthony purchased the Nashville, Tenn., expansion team of the American Basketball Association (ABA). The ABA is an up-and-coming league that provides equal opportunity for a diverse group of owners to build successful sports franchises across the country.

Anthony, a singer and music entrepreneur, was recently named one of ten emerging independent artists in music by Jim Beam. Her music is played on Top 40 radio stations and has been featured in numerous magazines including JANE and LAUNCH. In addition, she has toured with various artists including Enrique Iglesias, James Taylor, Christina Aguilera, Tom Petty, The Wallflowers, Chris Isaak, Merchant, the Black Crowes and Oasis.

Anthony's upcoming album, Vent, is scheduled to be released July 13, 2004.

I'd post her up and go to the hole on her, though I'd likely get called for an up-and-down or a double dribble. Still, she could go over-and-back on me anytime. Just stay away from the kicked ball violation!

I'm thinking more along the lines of standing her up in the paint and getting called for a 3-second violation.

Little does this picture tell you, but she has an ass the size of Jane Curtain's in that SNL skit.

She probably looks like a Bartlette Pear.

DOLA:

A former standout guard for Vanderbilt, McElhiney was taken by the Indiana Fever in the third round of last year's WNBA Draft but was released before playing a game.

Boy, does THAT look sexy on a resume.

You don't get anywhere with groundbreaking for it's own sake. We're not exactly talking about Pat Summit here.

I'm just wondering how being a successful college player translates into being professional coaching material? Even if it is a lower tier league. She definately has an uphill battle winning the respect of the players.
