New ZFL Fantasy Contest

This is a contest open to all fans of the ZFL, GM and fans alike. In previous ZFL contests, the fans have had very impressive showings vs. GMs, and this contest could easily be the same. In fact, we're going to pit the GMs vs. the fans. Here's how it works:

1. There are 3 teams. The GMs east, the GMs west, and the fans.

2. The three teams will compete in 3 arenas: Most points, highest average score among team members, and highest overall individual score. I'm guessing the GMS west beat the other two teams in all three arenas (:p), but we'll see.

3. Here's how to score points: I will give a list of 25 stars of the ZFL, some of them among the league's elite, others are decoys that you might only think are among the elite. Every member of your team will select the group of 10 that you think are the league's 10 Best players and rank them.

Do you think Flamebeard or Tom Sanders is a better player? Hmm? Rank the top 10, baby. (But wait...are Flamebeard and Sanders even in the top 10? And if so, where?) From the list of 25 players, every team member submits a list of the top 10 ZFL players, in order. Though you may strategize with other teammates, it is wise to submit individual, seperate lists of 10.

4. I have the list of the top 10 in a sealed envelope. Here's how they were determined:
A. All ZFL players are already mathematically ranked between 0 and 20 (though no one in the history of the ZFL has risen above an 18). Any player with a higher number than another is considered better than any player with the lower number.
B. In the event of a tie numerical ranking (there are several), the first tie-breaker is by position:
1. QBs first,
2. Then the position players
3. Then o-linemen and d-linemen
4. Lastly, kickers
The second tiebreaker is by age. A younger player will be considered "better", since he theoretically has more years to contribute to his team.
The final tiebreaker is team's record last year.

5. When you've submitted your list, your ballot will be scored as follows:
A. 1 pt. for every correct member of the top 10
B. 1 bonus point for every member in the correct place
C. 1 additional bonus point for every member of the top 5 listed in the correct place.
A perfect ballot, therefore, would be 25 points. (Shyahhh! Good luck.)

6. At the end of the contest, each team's scores will be tabulated. The team with the highest average score will be awarded the gold, the team with the highest cumulative score will be awarded the silver, and the team who had the highest individual score will take home the bronze. Of course, one team could take home all three medals. And wouldn't that make the rest of you all feel stupid?

Are you ready to play?

Looks very tough. Out of curiosity (if you're willing to reveal it), what's the lowest mathematical number of the 25 players you've listed?

Looks very tough. Out of curiosity (if you're willing to reveal it), what's the lowest mathematical number of the 25 players you've listed?

Mathematically, the listed players range from 18 to 13. There are, of course, several 14s, 15, etc. That's why I had to enlist the complicated rules of tie-breaking. And, yes, this is going to be tough. Truth be told, I would be surprised (and impressed) if anyone scores more than 10 points on a single ballot.

I'm also debating whether to reveal the top 10 at the end of this contest or not...would that give too much away? Until now, the players' true abilities have been hidden inside the grading system. Perhaps I could list the top 10, but not in any particular order, or perhaps I won't tell at all, and just score the ballots myself.

A hint or help for you: I tried to do this myself, without looking at the numbers. I found it helpful to consider how the players interract with their team...for example...if a team's o-squad or d-squad is absolutely dominant over every other team, you have to figure there are some big stars (not just a collection of decent guys) on that squad. If a team's squad is successful, but there's no other real talent on that squad, there must be a big star hidden in there somewhere.

Finally, BIG HINT: players that came into the league at a young age a few years back would have progressed more than recent stars or those that started at an older age.

Sorry, duh on me. Go ahead and post them right here. I won't score your ballot until the end of the contest, so others won't get clues from your score on how you did. Others can, however, debate your selections :D

Okay! The first ballot is in, which means the GMs east have the lead in all 3 categories by default at this point...

And, since Dolphin volunteered to be the sacrificial lamb, you can all tell him now how much you disagree with all his picks. Do you really think Thumbless is #1?? Oh, and did you notice how the Milwuakee guy put TWO of his own players in the top 10? The only other team he did that with was San Antonio. C'mon, is Milwaukee really that good? :p :D

Come on Revrew. You only gave us 25 players to chose from. And Bruce is the best kicker all time. Even if he isn't in the top 10 of YOUR 25 list, Superman is way better than him. :p

For what it's worth rev, I'd rather you kept the numerical grade of the individual ZFLers and their actual rank in 'goodness' to yourself and just score us on our guesses. If you want to release some of the information, maybe at the end you can give us the rankings of the 18-25th players on the list for example, which can still lead to some heated debate over who actually made the top 10, much less top overall player.

I'm inclined to agree with you, JAG. I figure part of the allure is not actually knowing the mathematical equations.

But it's so hard just to sit on all this information and keep it mum!

(By the way, at this point, the East is leading in ALL THREE medal races! C'mon fans and West!)

Maybe you could throw out a scrap, like the #6 overall player, at the very end. But it's more interesting not knowing exactly who's ranked where. You can't very well claim your player is number one knowing that he's fourth.

But anyway, the numbers can and will change, so maybe it's not that big a deal. Maybe you can just keep a record of it and let us know five seasons from now.

Hm, the East is leading in all the medals? Looks like I have to update my ballot. :)

Given how this thread has waned, I have arbitrarily decided it is time to end the contest.

Which means...our winners are....

The Gold Medal for highest average team score goes to: The Fans!

The Silver Medal for highest cumulative team score goes to: GMs East!

The Bronze Medal for the team with the highest individual score: GMs East!

Oh! GMs West are completely shut down!

In other news:
With a score of 8, the highest individual score goes to: DolphinFan
Honorable mention to fan Katon, who put together an impressive streak of 4 consecutive correct picks, all in the correct order. Had he only moved the whole lot of 4 perfect picks up one spot, he would have easily outscored everyone else.

Other interesting tidbits:
1. Of the 10 top players, 7 of them are offensive or defensive lineman.
2. None of the top 10 players are quarterbacks.
3. Of the 3 skill position players to make the list, ALL 3 are in the top 5.
4. One player, who several put on their list, and some quite highly, isn't even in the top 20.

Good contest, men!
