I finally got around to downloading Mozilla, assuming I would use it instead of Netscape (I don't like IE). Man, that was the easiest installation ever! It automatically matched all of my old Netscape preferences, so I just had to load it and go. Nice! http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/%7Efof/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif

are you using straight mozilla or firefox... firefox is just the browser, so it takes up less space.

I loved tabbed browsing.
But I'm stubborn, I'm still on "old" Mozilla (1.5). Maybe I'll migrate over to Firefox on my next hard drive wipe but on this install, it's had some issues.

I like Opera's tabbed browsing more then Mozilla's. The history feature in Opera's tabbed browsing is 100 times better then the version in Mozilla.

Bah. Last time I checked, Opera was chock full of advertising if you didn't pay for it.

I've heard that even the paid version has ad stuff in it. Just like the NY Times, I can't remember the source, but I do recall reading that somewhere.

no, I have the "paid" version, and there are no ads. I think the tabs in there are more intuitive and work better than Mozilla, but things run/look smoother in Mozilla. Plus there are not as many useful plugins for Opera.

Yeah I have this cool system I do for websites. I visit the main site and then go to the forum (since the forum is the one I spend most my time on) and I do that with all the sites I visit and then I save my session.
So then whenever I open Opera I'm right there are the message board, but if I hit back (which is a button on my mouse as well) I got right to the updated front page without having to do any work. It's pretty nice and the most efficient way for me to browse.

I love Firebird and have been using it for probably 6 months now, but since v0.8 it seems to run slower than IE and use a lot more system resources.... I'm really looking foward to the 1.0 release.

What is the general advantage of Mozilla over IE?
A) Tabbed browsing
B) I've never had a single pop-up
C) Faster load times at certain sites (I may be imagining this)
D) Down with the evil empire! (sorry, dawgfan)

I still have to open up IE once in awhile since some sites are simply unworkable with Firefox. http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/%7Efof/forums/images/smilies/mad.gif

You're all lame. Lynx is by far the best browser out there. I use it all the time.

What about Mosaic or Gopher. In fact, which came first of the three?

Lynx wasn't half bad, for a text browser :)
Mosaic would have been the last of the three. I think it was Lynx, Gopher, and then Mosaic.

As well it should be! :) I remember using it back when I was a CoSysop for a large Southern California BBS.

I think version 0.8 is a step backwards from 0.7. It is a system resource hog, and I hate the new download interface.
Am I the only person who hates tabbed browsing?

What do you dislike about tabbed browsing? I like being able to do all my web surfing in one window.
As for the resource hog issue... well, I'm doing most of my surfing at work on a P4 3Ghz machine with 512 MB of RAM, so I don't really notice a resource problem...

I resisted trying FireFox for a long, long time. Finally I gave in to see what the big deal was.
I'll never go back to IE (except for those few pages that sov mentioned)...

I started a thread a few months ago about me offering to run a telnet bbs for door games. I don't think anyone was interested though.

Cool... I'll have to look into it then a little further... I'm not even sure if the major doors (LORD, BRE,SRE,Tradewars) are even being supported anymore.

They've gotta be out there somewhere...
I dunno if my web hosting company will allow telnet... I'd have to check into it.

It would probably be something I'd just run on my PC here. Even with a 256k upload connection (3.0 mb download/256k upload here). Thats still like 3-4 "nodes" back in the 57.6k modem days. Doors don't need to much.

I am using an Athlon 2800 with 1gb RAM, so I also don't notice it, I am just reporting what the task manager tells me. :)
As for tabbed browsing, I much prefer to know that when I close a window I have not accidentally closed down 3 or 4 different tabs. If you click the close button (The X at the top right of the screen) or right click on the taskbar and select close, it will close all tabs. I just don't like that. I want a window for every page I am viewing.

To answer a few questions, I downloaded everything with Mozilla. I probably won't use anything other than the browser, but who knows. I'm with Ryan, and don't like tabbed browsing. I'm way too used to closing windows. I tried tabbed browsing after getting whatever version of Netscape it first came in, but have stuck with multiple windows.

I haven't gotten one pop-up since making the switch...
And that's very handy because I'm always visiting soccernet. which bombards you with them.
