View Full Version : CM question: player values

Got a quick question for CM veterans. How are the player values set, or what do they represent?

I'm thinking market value, but I'm a bit confused.

Reason I ask is that I bought a player on the transfer market. I remember clearly that his value was under $10000 before the transaction, I think it was $4000. After haggling with the team that owned his right for a little while, making offers starting at $3000, and finally buying the player for $8000 or $10000. I was very happy with the buy, as the player is a 21 year old striker with 17 in finishing, 11 in heading and long shots, and 12 in off the ball, skills I thought he could build on and become a fixture for my Luton Town team.

Now comes the weird part. The player agrees to a contract, everything goes right according to plan, and surprise, he shows up on my roster with a $40000 value. Where did that come from??? Not complaining, just trying to understand...

Anybody got a clue about this?

reputation, of the club, the player, the league he plays in etc...

Only a guess, but the higher value is your scout's estimation of what he's worth on the transfer market. You were bidding on a value set by the other team's scouts.

Players value are dependent on a lot of things:

Firstly what club he is at. A player at a lower league club side is not going to be worth as much as a player at a Premiership side (even the same player)
Secondly his contract. A player with 5 years left on his contract is going to worth more than a player whos contract runs out next week.

Things such as the player reputation (linked to 1st point) also effects his value. A player known around the world is probably going to have a higher value than a player who isn't even known to the supporters of his own club!

In your case I would hazard that the move of club promted his value change. His move has made him more high profile and hence his value rose

Thanks everyone, makes a lot of sense.

Come to think of it, I don't think I remember one of my players with reasonable skills with a value lower than 40k. That player was playing for a Conference team, while I am in division 2, so this may be the explanation.

Thanks again.

The value displayed is a neutral valuation of the player in question - ie. his value if his club had no real interest in retaining his services (but weren't going to free transfer/transfer list him).

The 'real' value that a player will be sold for can be far higher or lower than this value depending on the situation involved, for instance a key player with a long contract will tend to go for a much higher value than that shown, a bankrupt club might let players go for a pittance to cut the wage bill etc. ...

The club a player is at actively affects his value, for instance a youngster playing at Man Utd is instinctively thought to be of more value by most pundits than one at Darlington, due to the prestige of the club, the fact that the club thought him worthy of being on the books and the coaching he's recieved at that club (which might be better than he'd recieve at a smaller club) - this happens both irl and in the game.

Hope this helps,

Marc

In my current career, I was promoted to Manchester United from Hull. Once I got to Manchester United I found I had a very large transfer budget. I bought a few players from my old Hull team and their value went up significantly once they joined my team. Also, due to a club (Valencia I believe) being in receivership, I managed to buy a player with a 30 million dollar value for 3 million. He is by far, my best value pickup. I love how the team's selling point can vary widely based on a large variety of factors.

In my current Tamworth career, one of my best players, Mark Hicks, just went up from $375 K (yes, I am using dollars--and Fahrenheit, too--so sue me ;) ) to $2.5 M! I just went from second division to first division and it's obvious that is the impetus for the change. But his rate of change seems far higher than just about anyone else on my team. Not that I mind. ;)

This info is certanly helpful. I had no idea how this worked before.

Curretly coaching Kettering. Just managed to land a loan for a dominaing young ACM from West Ham. Easily the best player in Confrence. A steal at 650wk. Of course we still suck though.

A similar thing happened irl with Bobby Zamora at Brighton, once we reached the first division Premiership clubs started taking an interest in him and we eventually sold him for a few million, he was just as good when we were in Div 2, but because he was competing at a lower level he wasn't attracting the same amount of interest (and so his valuation would have been lower).

PS. Don't forget to use your muscle if you're a big club - you can often get players cheap in that situation by offering insulting deals to smaller teams, waiting for the player to get a sniff of the offer from the media and start sulking ... then putting in an only slightly less insulting offer (which the club will sometimes accept as their player is now looking to move).

Of course this is most effective with unprofessional players, who might not be the sort of people you really want at your club?

works when you show your interest too in CM03/04 no ? (I knew you could do it with the offers in previous versions but now I prefer trying to do it only by showing I'm interested in getting the player).

Yes, but to a slightly less extent - rumoured interest will never have as much effect as having placed a physical bid ...
