I've been thinking about getting a subscription to either a history, or, preferably, military history magazine/journal. I've never really read any in depth, so I'm working with a pretty clean slate of knowledge on this. My favorite subjects usually tend to deal with 20th Century history, mainly the World Wars and Europe, as well as ancient and medieval times. Any recommendations would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

Hey Ice,
It's been a while since I read either one, but back in my history teaching days I would read Military History and Military History Quartely occasionally. From what I remember of them MH was more for the layman/amateur historian, while MHQ was for the more serious historian. You can learn more about them here:

Hope that helps

I concur with Thomkal's assessment.
Despite it being outside your stated area, I'd highly recommend North and South magazine. It is head and shoulders above any Civil War magazine out there, presents an even-handed viewpoint, and draws some heavy-hitting scholars. Good stuff.

World War 2 is a quality publication.

What's wrong with reading books?

What's wrong with reading books?
I enjoy reading history books as well but truthfully, don't have as much time as I would like to do so. Most of my limited book reading time involves fiction, and I can easily take a magazine to the gym when I work out.

Although, they're more Americana then military, I would recommend American Heritage and its quarterly sister AH: Science & Technology.
They have had articles such as: the history of Bourbon, the history of the sidewinder missile and even the history of the paper clip (amazingly, it was interesting.)

Military History is always good. Military Heritage offers a very similar product. Problem with Military History is they give no discount for a subscription, so I just wait till they come out and decide by subject matter if I want the issue. MHQ is a better magazine, but much more expensive.
