MONTGOMERY, Ala. (May 29) -- For Delta State's baseball team, the 10th time's a charm.

The Statemen, winning their school-record 54th game, won their first NCAA Division II baseball championship, beating Grand Valley State, 12-8, before a pro-Delta State crowd of 2,428 at Paterson Field.

This was Delta State's 10th trip to a Division II national baseball championship. The Statesmen had lost in the 1968 and 1978 national title game, and not played on the final night since.

Delta State (54-11) broke out to 4-0, 6-2 and 9-7 leads, then got a little breathing room with a three-run ninth. Will Waldkirch (4-for-5, three RBI and two runs) and Eric Patten (two runs, two RBI) each hit home runs in the ninth.

Tournament MOP Bert Pickard led a number of Statesmen with two hits. Pickard was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBI, including a home run. Also getting two hits were Craig Newton (2-for-5) and Clay Smtih (2-for-4, two runs).

Matt McAlpin (10-1) got the win, pitching 6 1/3 innings, allowing nine hits, six runs (four earned) and striking out five. Scott Ellison pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief to earn his third save.

Brandon McFarland led Grand Valley State (46-16) with a 3-for-4, two-RBI night. Scott Smith, Joe Mertes, Matt Wright (three RBI) and Nick Sandy also had two hits.

Second-ranked Delta State won four-of-five games in the tournament, beating No. 1 Central Missouri State twice. Grand Valley State had won its first three games in Montgomery. Under the tournament format, bracket winners play a single-elimination game for the national title
