View Full Version : Geography Rally Game
WSUCougar
06-01-2004, 10:28 AM
Rules:
> This is a mileage game. The object is to be the player with the fewest accumulated miles. There are ten stages (destinations) to the rally. You are striving to get the shortest distance between your destinations.
> You will be told the destination of both the current and subsequent stage. Plan accordingly.
> You may not duplicate someone else’s destination. Duplicate entries are disqualified, unless the original poster edits or deletes their post and uses a different destination.
> The top five posted answers are the only ones that count. Everyone else is grouped into “the pack” (kind of like the Tour de France, although I don’t know the specific rules involved in that). The pack scores the same answer as the 5th-best answer for the question.
> IMPORTANT: Once a minimum of five answers have been posted, anyone (usually the person with the best answer, but it doesn’t matter whom) can post the word “Pack” as a one-word post to end the round. The round does not end until someone does this, so the time limit on a round can be very short or very long.
> Only the top five answers count. It doesn’t matter how many answers are posted beyond five – only the top five count.
> Editing and deleting answers is permissible, but edits must be made before the word “Pack” is posted. Edits or entries made after the word “Pack” is posted disqualifies that entry.
I’ll wait for a bit to see if there are any questions, then we’ll proceed with the first stage.

Ok... and how specific of a location can we get? Building names? Street Names? City names only? etc, etc.. ;)

06-01-2004, 10:38 AM
What form do you want our answers to take? Should we be posting things like highway/street names? Or are we just posting a series of cities, for instance?
Or is this still evolving?

QS just worded my question much better than I did...
WSUCougar
06-01-2004, 11:51 AM
Sorry for the delay.
The destinations will be along the lines of "a city in Sweden" or "a Pac-10 college town." Cities and towns, worldwide.
RPI, the goal is to move from your current destination to the next destination in the shortest number of miles. If you are in Dallas, for example, and need to go to a Pac-10 town, you'd want Tucson or Tempe rather than Seattle or Pullman. The variance will depend upon where each individual (and the pack) starts that stage.
WSUCougar

Okay, everyone starts in the same spot, which is Washington DC.
Stage 1 Destination: A state capital located west of the Mississippi River.
And for planning purposes only (don't go there yet!):
Stage 2 Destination: A state capital located east of the Mississippi River.

Congrats to SplitP on the victory, and to everyone for their active participation. Sorry about the timing, wade - perhaps next time we will do it by PMs to avoid that issue.

WSU: Fun game! I don't know that PM's would be better because it would cause confusion about duplicate cities, etc... I just deal with my oddball schedule ;)...

If I may offer my thoughts...
Too be brutally honest, I wasn't all that enamored with this game. It became more of an exercise in refreshing the screen as fast as possible, or going on the internet to find obscure towns/cities. There didn't seem to really be much "strategy" involved - just basically keep a general path in mind, and you're fine.
Now, something with PM's would help the first issue, I suppose, but not the 2nd. Don't really have ideas about how I might like to really see things change.
With that said, I appreciate all the effort you put into this WSUCougar - clearly, it took a good deal of work to run this thing, and it was a very enjoyable distraction from work for me.

I agree with RPI-Fan that if you were the first one to post, you typically had the shortest distance. Take for example the AFC/NFC South question coming from Canada. If you weren't the first 2 to pick Indy or Nashville, your score suffered.
Maybe destinations with more equidistant options would help.
It was fun and something to do, but not that strategic.
