I'm not a tennis aficionado by any means, but I've watched a little here and there over the years. I'm sure there is a simple explanation to this, but I've never heard why the seedings are different in tennis than in other sports. Right now the 14 seed and 9 seed are playing in the semifinals in the women's French Open. In other sports those two seeds couldn't meet in the semis. I realize that there are many unseeded people in tennis tournaments, but that wouldn't seem to make the seeds line up differently. So does anybody why it's this way?

They seed the top four into separate quadrants and draw the next four into those quadrants. And then draw the next four. Etc. It is not a standard true seeded bracket. I don't know why they do it this way.

Thanks for the info. That still seems weird to me, but at least I know how they are seeded.

I think it is done to create variety. The Top seeds don't change much so it makes sure that every week you don't see the same matches.
