So my wife and I just moved into a 2 story townhouse from our apartment. Everything has been good so far (except that I can't figure out how to get my wireless network set up, and can't get my cable internet on my laptop), until tonight. I was coming down the stairs with two boxes that I just emptied, and I slipped on a step. I thudded down 5 steps on my fat ass, scraping my arms on the railings before coming to a rest on the floor of the family room. I'm not really hurt (more sore than anything), but I just needed to vent. Moving sucks!!!!! We only moved about 3 miles, and have the apartment until the end of June, but we can't seem to get the damn apartment fully cleaned out. I suppose I should go to bed now, except that it requires my going back upstairs, and I know that those bastards are just trying to kill me.

Thanks for the venting.

I feel your pain. I'm also moving and I also tripped down a few steps today. Fortunately, I didn't fall quite as far or as hard as you did. However, I'm also hating moving at this moment.

I must second this response. :)

I've fallen and I can't get up.

our stairs have 2 rails missing from them - I've fallen down the buggers TWICE, and kicked out one rail each time.

be careful - the stairs will NOT give up.

The first time I ran down my stairs I hit my head on the ceiling (its low at one point), fell flat on my back and slid all the way down.

In one of our apartments, I slid down our carpted stairs not once, but twice. Unfortunately, my wife (gf at the time) finds this sort of thing terribly funny, and so laughed at me hysterically both time.

She did ask me if I was alright, but when someone is laughing in your face, it takes away from the sincerity a bit. Maybe I'll get her a Best of the Three Stooges DVD for Christmas.

I'm so glad I'm not raising my kids in a 2-story. Looking back, I'm not sure how I didn't kill myself as a kid. I almost broke an ankle jumping from the top down to the next platform, though, and remember numerous times when I came barrelling down the stairs a bit too fast and almost lost complete control.

Never had a good old fashioned tumble, though.

I just moved into a two story house for the first time, and my three year old will be here next week.. Thanks for making me paranoid. :)

You haven't lived unless you've had a tumble. Go find some stairs and throw yourself down them.

I'd be particularly paranoid about my 4 year old. She's simply too big for her age (4'1", 65 lbs., turns 5 in August), and she trips over her own shadow. She makes Gerald Ford look like Fred Astaire.

Not necessary. I've hired a security firm to give me a good kicking and beating to make me feel more secure.

I have survived living in a 2-story house so far. Actually now the hangout in my house is the attic, so we have to go up 2 sets of stairs... I slip a lot, but usually catch myself, but occassionally I fall on my butt.

There were two occurances that were unfortunate, one not having to do with stairs. If you have holes in your floor that lead to a basement, make sure that you keep an eye on your children. I know from expierence that it doesn't feel great to fall through onto cement.

Also don't give your kids laundry baskets. Make them carry their clothes downstairs without a basket. Those baskets are not very safe to slide down the stairs in, not that I know from expierence or anything... :)

I did the stair fall a year and a half ago. I slipped and shot up in the air, hitting myself in the face with a glass mug, then landing with the small of my back sqarely on on step. I though for sure i had broken my back.

My son did that on our stairs, of course, he was playing around and slipped....he went down the stairs, hitting his head off of the rail and the wall, and then hit head first on the floor.

He's okay, at least short term, but the beauty of it all is I don't have to tell him to "not play on the stairs" anymore. It's like he wants to police himself nowadays or something? :D

I broke my tailbone in the 3rd grade falling down our stairs, and I wasn't even playing around. There isn't much more embarrassing than having to take a pillow to school to sit on when you're ~10 years old.

I swallowed my tongue once when i fell down the basement stairs.MY dad heard me choking and picked me up and started throwing me around like a rag doll till i could breath again.

I don't think they teach that method in school though:)

Just be happy you have that big ass to cushion your fall.:D

Update:

I am sore. My ass is sore, my legs are sore, and my arms are sore. I am being VERY careful on those stairs now. I'm going to wake my wife up and we are going to watch Shrek 2. Then I think I'm going to buy myself a papasan chair. Those are nice and safe.

i seem to trip more running up the stairs. see i have been getting up the stairs of my house in under 2 seconds for 5 years now, heh, so sometimes when i'm running up them and the tips of my feet don't grab the end of the step good enough, i'll fall and bust my shins up. always fun.

Shin-busters are fun, especially on the non-carpeted stairs leading to the basement.

I can't tell you how many times I fell down the stairs when I was a kid. Thing is, the worst stairs related injury I ever suffered was when I was running UP the stairs. I was downstairs and someone called me from upstairs. I started sprinting up the steps but I stepped just a bit too low on the top stair and kicked it really hard. I'm not certain whether I actually broke my toe or not, but it swelled up quite nicely and it was hard as hell to walk for about a week...
