What about Tom Chambers in one of those Lakers vs. Celtics or whatever the hell those early NBA Sega games were called. Chambers could dunk the ball from the three point line. We called it the "Ghost Slam" because Chambers would leap from the 3-point line and then hover in the air towards the basket, floating directly through anyone in his way, pumping the basketball up and down until he slammed it home. A nice move.

Tecmo Bo was the best of all time. The very first Madden game the Eagles QB (obviously Cunningham) was unstoppable. He could run all over the field with the entire defense chasing him. Simply unstoppable.

A more obscure one for me is Stan Musial in my Earl Weaver baseball days. If he was on my team, he'd hit pretty good. If he wasn't on my team, he'd slaughter me. I couldn't get the guy out. I can't begin to tell you how many games I lost due to the guy.

THe whole game was simply toss left, toss right. No defensive player could catch him on the corner.

A more obscure one for me is Stan Musial in my Earl Weaver baseball days. If he was on my team, he'd hit pretty good. If he wasn't on my team, he'd slaughter me. I couldn't get the guy out. I can't begin to tell you how many games I lost due to the guy.I beg to differ. The three man 'league' I was in back in the EWB days had to create the 'Ty Cobb Rule'...no bunting. If you had Cobb in your lineup, all you had to do was bunt and he had a single every at bat. It was impossible to stop.

I remember klima and gretzky.. But i picked roenick.. mainly because he had all the offensive skills.. and was like a 95+ in checking and agression as well.. so he was basically a one man army for the blackhawks

Hell i remember Bo jackson in super nes play action football (the version with college teams and high schools and pros) he was the kickoff returner/rb for auburn.. you literally had to leave your kicker on the 50 yard line to stop him from returning every kickoff for a td..

If you made a guy on Baseball Stars with 15 speed, he could run around the bases and end up scoring just by beating guys trying to pick him off.

Does not really count b/c it wasn't just one player, but I felt like in a thread mentioning this many old school sports games that Baseball Stars needed to be mentioned.

Lawrence Taylor in the original (not Super) Tecmo Bowl could block every FG attempt by your opponent. Not a bad trick to have when you are playing a friend.

Tim Flannery in 1984 Microleague Baseball (Microsports or something like that. Can't remember the name right now) An error in his data stats input gave him an extremely high doubles ratio to the point that he was almost guaranteed 2 a game. It was a nice exploit to keep hidden from your friends for a head to head advantage. :)

But in the earlier version of NBA Live, I know Dan Majerle could hit A 3 pointer all the time. I remeber playing my brother in law, and he took the suns. Majerle had 75 points, all 3 pointers.

Although I voted for Bo Jackson, I just remembered another great player. For some reason in Tony LaRussa Baseball II, Gregg Jefferies was awesome. I'd pick him on my team in a draft everytime because he would win the Triple Crown almost every year, even if you simmed the entire season. He was good for like .350, 60 HRs and 150 RBIs in any given year.

LT could block every FG in Tecmo Super Bowl too, because he lined up right in the path of the kick, and was so fast. Just time that dive. LT gets my vote.

I never played any of the video games mentioned, but there are a couple of players from other games I'd like to mention for the fun of it:

1) Kal Daniels, 1987 (Strat-O-Matic Baseball) - Kal hit .370 that year against righties with power AND speed AND walks. My friends got quite tired of him beating up on them, so they either switched to a lefty (Kal hit about .190 against lefties, so I went to the bench to get Tracy Jones, who wasn't too bad that year), or intentionally walked him. Fun times.

2) Charlie Batch, 1998-99 (FOF Classic and FOF2) - According to Jim, there were three great QBs from the Class of '98 - Peyton (duh), Ryan (you snicker now, but it was understandable then), and Charlie. Charlie led me to, oh, about a dozen Front Office Bowls spread out over 50 or so sim seasons. If only he were half as good in real life...

I'd take Federov or Bure over him, or even Lindros and Hull for NHL 95 (when the one-timers by the center were so easy to set up). Not to mention those defencemen with 99 shots... Al Iafrate was sweet.

By the way, was there ever a more consistently over-rated sports athelete than the NHL series' Alexie Kovalev? The guy was like a 95 every year, even though he didn't really become a real-life star until years later. Neil Smith of the Rangers was the "consultant" on the ratings and just pumped up Kovalev like crazy every year.

Manning was unstoppable in FOF2.

I can't believe TSB Jerry Rice wasn't on the list. all you had to do was run that streak with a v in it at the top of the screen and he'd catch it for a TD like every time even if it was 120 yd pass in the air :)

I never played as the Raiders that much so while I know how great Bo is I can't pick him. LT was simpliy nuts, insane amount of sacks and could block FGs. I HATED playing against him but playing against Bo wasn't as bad since you could just pick run plays all game and take your chances against the pass.

Honestly, I feared Ruth, Cobb, Williams, Frank Robinson, Mays. . . all of em less than I feared Musial. I can only think of two or three times in my Earl Weaver days where I got him out in the 9th inning.

I can only think of two or three times in my Earl Weaver days where I got him out in the 9th inning.In the early 90s I used to enter the stats for each AL team prior to each season and sim through the year as Toronto. The one guy who scared me was Randy Johnson. I think Earl Weaver Randy Johnson must have been like 18-2 lifetime against the Blue Jays. Just unhittable.

Wasn't it in Earl Weaver Baseball that if you hit the foul pole, it wasn't a homerun? I remember that because I was playing against a friend and I had Ruth, who hit a monster shot down the line that hit the top of the foul pole and bounced back into play and I was thrown out at 2nd.

Do you have any idea how hard it was to get him to correctly pronounce Stottlemyer?

The worst part was that there was a mini-bug in the game, where if you typed too many letters the CPU voice would pronounce the name right the first time but then trip over subsequent attempts. Resulting in a sequence like this:

I always found Thurman Thomas to be a great back to use in TSB. He didn't quite have the speed or moves of Bo, but they were good enough to get 300 yard games consistently. The X factor for Thermal, though, was his hands. He had the hands of Jerry Rice. You could send him downfield and he could catch those fifty yard bombs. There were many games in which Thermal had probably 600 combined total yards for me...
