This saves the US the embarrasment of having to possibly ban them from the team, and potential relay-mates from the possibility of losing a medal.

Not so fast. My money says Marion is part of the 4x100 relay team. Not to mention she has two other events still to qualify for.

Call me crazy... but this good turn of fortunes for the US Tack & Field team seems a bit too good to be true.

Oh, thats right....she did finish in the top 6.

Bummer.

I'm curious... are there many American sports fans who believe Montgomery hasn't been using drugs?

Only the top four are automatically in the relay pool. The other two are wildcards, and don't have to have finished in the top six or have even made the finals in that event. Additionally, all members of the US track and field contingent can be part of the relay pool once they are in Athens. Gwen Torrance or maybe Marion Jones ran a leg in the 1600m relay under this rule in either Sydney or Atlanta.

Is there a chance you bumped into him when he was in Toronto training with Ben Johnson's coach?

(thats just my clever way of saying hell yeah hes been doping)

(thats just my clever way of saying hell yeah hes been doping)Nods. That's what I figured.

I actually mis-typed... I meant to ask about Jones, not Montgomery. But I doubt you could realistically feel one was guilty but not the other.

I dunno, she was married to CJ Hunter, who is also a cheater. And she didnt go down for that.

I dunno, she was married to CJ Hunter, who is also a cheater. And she didnt go down for that.Exactly. She was married to Hunter (cheater), is dating Montgomery (cheater), was training with Francis (cheater) and is linked to Balco (cheaters). But apparently, we're supposed to believe that she herself has never cheated.

Apparently, this woman just has a lot of bad luck.

Hell, she probably got pregnant to mask the effects of Steroids.

(Okay, maybe Im being a bit far-fetched here:) )

Couldn't have happened to a nicer couple of cheaters

WOW nothing like a drug scandal to boost the publicity (if not the popularity) of a sport. Track and Field talk on FOFC

If they were really innocent.. they should have taken drug tests on the spot when the allegations first came out.. would have been over and done with..

(this goes for jones.. lance armstrong... etc)

I get the really bad feeling they all are guilty.. sadly

I think Armstrong has taken and passed several drug test. I could be wrong but I remember having a major problem with drugs a few years back and they just removed a biker from the race for failing a drug test.

Are there more than a handful of Americans who give a shit about track & field? I stll have very little idea who Montgomery is, steriod scandal and all. It's track & field!

Agreed. I sitll have no idea who Montgomery is. None at all other than he wont be in the Olympics. I knew Marion Jones from those Nike adds and the last time around.

Seriously, I can almso count the number of track & field athletes I know (all time) on one hand: Jessie Owens, Ben Johnson, Carl Lewis, Bruce Jenner, Marion Jones, Montgomery (don't even know his first name), Flo-Jo, Jackie-Joyner Kersey (sp?), Dan & Dave... I think that's all I got.

Ksyrup

And their existence or lack thereof in this world has had/would have virtually no impact on me. Other than, I would have lost a few laughs over the Dan & Dave commercial fiasco years back.

These people are, for the most part (shot put?!), great athletes. But in my mind, it's like sticking Mozart on an accordian.

Then again, I won't be watching the Olympics anyway. There'll be too much going on in real sports that I care about to watch sports/events/competitions I would rank below golf (and I hate golf) on my list of exciting sports to watch. And that doesn't even factor in the soap opera TV coverage we'll be subjected to.

Lance Armstrong is the most tested athlete in the world.

Regardless, tests wouldn't have done Jones and Montgomery any good in the public eye. They are charged with taking drugs that BALCO specifically formulated to avoid detection in all currently-known drug tests.

I'm pretty sure Colin Montgomery has never tested positive for any kind of drugs...

The big deal is over the fact BALCO supposedly cooked up this THG stuff, that cannot be detected. Jones has been tested many times, and has said to anyone who will listen that she has never failed a test, and until she does they should all shut the you know what up. The testing is so far behind the doping that's it's virtually irrelevant. Those who get caught are either pathetically brazen or pathetically stupid.

Or they're pushing the legal limits with something that's detected indirectly (like with doping) and accidentally cross the line.

Dola, and the Festina scandal in France was kicked off by a team staff member getting caught with the goods, not by a positive drug test, IIRC.

The only reason THG was discovered was an anonymous coach mailing a sample to the USOC. There are probably 4-5 other drugs out there like that. The thing that is going to suck for Track & Field in general is that now they're saving frozen urine samples so that whenever they discover a previously undetectable drug, they can go back and test for it. There could very well be a number of medalists in the Olympics disqualified months/years after it ends. I'd guess 10% at best of the athletes are actually clean, so this won't end. And just wait 3-4 Olympics from now when the possibility of genetically engineered athletes comes up.

Noone mentions this enough when talking about the two in the sports media.

Neither has ever had an Olympic final caliber performance and then passed a test which detected THG.

LOL. I think with her failing to make the Olympics in the 100, Popsicle is dropping this promotion.

Ben Johnson had horse legs when he was on steroids....Marion Jones has a horse face.....therefore she is guilty :)
