Injury Prone Quarterbacks

How much does that effect the managing of your football team ?

By this, I mean that if you know that you have an "injury-prone" Quarterback as your starter, you have to pay attention to a number of "variables". Put it in other words : you are never safe of anything.

Let's say your QB if one of the best in the league, he definitely has the talent to be an All-Leaguer year in-year out, but you have also come to realize that he injures himself (more or less seriously) every season as well.

So how do you react ?

Do you say to yourself : "I want to get rid of that burden, and I'll trade him for good compensation and get another good QB" or "it's just bad luck, hopefully next season he'll be healthy for all 16 games" or "well, I still count on him very much, but I need an insurrance policy and will look after a top flight FA QB to back him up next year".

I'm just wondering to which degree do you pay attention to a starting QB on your team, having multiple injuries over the course of his career.

Well, I guess it "works" for both.
But I was thinking "solo" when writing this thread.

In solo, that guy is so gone. I hate injury prone QBs. Usually I'll try to to sign a capable backup and just ride out the star's contract. Then he's free to leave.

In multiplayer, I imagine I would be a lot more tolerant. Just look at Jaime Canter in IHOF. What choice does QuikSand really have but to deal with the fact that the guy will probably only play 10-12 regular season games each year? He's clearly their best hope for a title, and good QB's are very hard to come by. I think in that situation you just suck it up and grab a young QB (which he's done) to start preparing for life after the injury-prone QB.

If teams are starting QBs with a future potential of the mid 40's, it's clear that a guy like Canter is worth keeping and starting, no matter what. The only problem is that you know you have an expensive starter for whom you need a good backup, who will be expensive as well.

Sounds like one of the better great cap decissions to be made.

No decision to be made - I'm very confident he'll be with Chesapeake until retiring (which could be after this season even, he's in his 15th year I think).

The QB is almost always the centerstone of my team, so I pay lots of attention to his characteristics.

Whether I keep him depends on how cheap he is to keep. If he's inexpensive relative to the quality of performance I can get out of him, I'll keep him and be sure there are better-than-normal backups behind him. If he's demanding too much money, he can pack his bags.

True enough.

I felt like among my team's top five priorities were to find an improved backup to Canter (due to his injury proclivity) and to find a long term answer for us at QB. Drafting Lyle (and moving up to do so) answered both needs, and was an obvious thing for us to do. (Not to mention that I happened to liek Lyle a whole lot in that rookie class, and felt I was getting a steal even while people were saying I gace up too much to get the pick)

I also acquired a veteran QB to act as a backup, but was pleasantly surprised when rookie Ron Lyle turned out to be a little more ready-to-go than I had imagined, and ended up winning the #2 QB job on his own. Lyle has already started two games this season due to Canter's injury - but we're hoping Canter can stay out there the rest fo the way this season in the IHOF, which is clearly our best hope for a championship this year or next.

Ron Lyle? That guy could fight! He came damn close to beating Ali and Foreman. I didn't even know he could play QB... Maybe he learned that in prison too... :D
