View Full Version : MLB All-Star Game Thoughts......
how did five (I think I counted right) Indians make the American League team?.....

The same way Adrian Beltre hit .315 with 22 HR and 56 RBI in the first half and didn't even merit a spot on the "Final Five" fan balloting for the final All-Star spot.
In other words, people are idiots.

I'd probably have more thoughts about the game if I could see it.
Not sure when it began, but it appears that Dish Network is suffering a complete outage of all local channel signals, or at least they are in this area (since I got a "we are currently working to fix reported outtages in your area" msg from the customer svc line.

Nolan Ryan must have thought that he shoulda held out for a better contract back in his days so he wouldn't be Taco Bell spots rooting for some lame guy who got 13 tries to throw a ball as a strike.

I guess you guys aren't having a problem with the stupid computer-generated advertisements behind home plate? On my TV it makes the pitcher's upper body look like it is computer generated as well...especially when the white Bank of America slate is up.
Not every pitcher is actually tall enough to get that affect, but it is happening for the catcher and umpire too. Money talks, screw the fans who might actually want it to look like a real baseball game and not an Xbox baseball game...

Wow. That was an amazingly messed up post. Where to start?
1. Texas is not in the AL Central, they are in the AL West.
2. It's Carlos Guillen, not Ozzie Guillen (is he still in the league?).
3. After having one of the worst teams in the history of baseball last year, the Tigers are only 3 games under .500 and only 5 games out of first. They've only got 5 less wins than Texas. Guillen has been a huge reason why.
4. Young leads the league in hits, but he also has had 54 more ABs than Guillen. Regardless of total hits, Guillen has simply been more productive at the plate and defensively. Look at the numbers:
Young
G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB BA OBP SLG OPS
86 384 64 127 18 6 12 53 28 49 7 .331 .375 .503 .878
Guillen
G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB BA OBP SLG OPS
85 330 64 107 24 7 13 65 37 55 7 .324 .391 .558 .948
There is little doubt that Guillen has been better than Young, and has probably also been the best SS in the entire league this year.

While I generally agree with all the points Schmidty made above, it's scary to me that the guy doesn't know Ozzie Guillen is the manager of the White Sox, one of the teams his Tigers has to pass to get to the top of the AL Central.
I mean, Bug could be forgiven the dumb slip as Guillen used to practically mean "Ozzie" in baseball, but Schmidty doesn't even know the guy is a manager of a primary rival of his favorite team? Ouch.

and your observations on Erstad and Eckstein and Kennedy look downright foolish considering that two of them are hitting over .290, and the third is playing great defense (and not too shabby at .264 either)
i know what they are hitting. an empty, powerless sub-.300 avg. doesn't impress me. erstad sucks, and will fall off (from a point that isn't that high anyway). .264 is average, which is exactly what i said kennedy was. eckstein has zero home runs. thats awful. they blow. face it. anyone with any knowledge of baseball would know that an average of .280 with like 8 combined homers doesn't win you much. they also know how unreliable batting average is as a judge of talent. nice try though
as for escobar i did mention him one time on this board. i thought it was that thread but apparently not. i said he had a lot of talent but was extremely inconsistent. he has a 3.91 era (thats your best? ha!) that bears that out. some good games, some bad games. this year he has been been better than he has been, but i wonder if that is just a better defense behind him, becuase the difference isn't much

i give up. i did find a nice thread in which there were said:
in seattle, they have rich aurelia and jeff cirillo on the same side of the infield. both these guys are done
cirillo was gone already, but there is why i can get on CR for thinking aurellia was good. i went on to say i thought they were the 3rd best team in the division, obviously not counting texas
losing mike cameron will hurt tremendously, his defense took away a lot of runs last year. replacing him with raul ibanez is not good, since raul's numbers are an illusion created by hitting in at kaufman field, which is a huge hitters park. safeco reduces a lot of extra base hits, so expect ibanez to regress to a .260 hitter
ibanez is currently hitting .262. mike cameron is currently helping the mets have one of the lowest team era's in the league (yes i know its not all him)
anahiem will be better, but 2002 was an abberation where everyone had career years at once. their infield can't hit, and darren erstad is waaaayy overrated. better hope vlad can carry the load, and garret anderson stays somewhat healthy. colon shouldn't be enough to help the starters, but you never know. expect a good season and a losing fight at the wildcard to ny/boston

i did jsut run across a thread where chief run picked the diamondback to get to the WS. lol. i continue looking . . .
Yes, I did. I picked them to lose to the Red Sox. Here was my posted reasoning at the time (preseason)...
Hey, anyone can come out of that NL West. If the Big Unit is healthy, he and Webb form as good a 1-2 as most teams. The offense should be very good with Sexson and Hillenbrand for whole years, and Gonzalez still around. It's not the best team in the NL, but it's good enough to win the NL West. Once it wins the NL West, the factor of having a dominating #1 pitcher (and maybe two with Webb, if he takes the next step) becomes more important in the playoffs.
Besides, I just couldn't call a Cubs-Red Sox World Series. That's like asking for fate to come down and slap me.
I don't think there is anything unreasonable there. Sexson's injury (and others) hurt them big time. Webb has been inconsistent, as w2ell. The NL West looks just as befuddled now as it did then, so I was right on with that. I just picked the wrong team.
BTW, I also posted this in that thread, a prediction thread, addressed to you, IMTG...

Chances are you never actually made a prediction (in football or baseball), since you have proven yourself to be a bit, shall we say, timid in the area of making predictions when they count?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA
you just made me fall out of my chair!!!!!!!
first im always wrong, now that i have been proven right i don't make predictions! HAHAHAHAHAHA

I said chances are. I didn't say for a fact. It is a fact you didn't bother making baseball predictions. Forgive me if I have to assume you would do the same elsewhere. And you're lucky this forum doesn't go back further than a year and change, because I wouldn't be surprised if you were picking Texas prior to last year.
Of course, I also seem to remember you spent a lot of time picking badly over Colorado-Texas games and Big 12 championships, so maybe that's where I am looking.

Come on guys, IMTG could be off making millions in the stock market or crushing casinos with his predictions, but instead, he shares it all with us! Are we lucky or what?!

Hey, I'm the one that predicted a Cardinals division title. Where are my props? I had the Phillies, Cardinals, and Padres in the NL with an Astros wild-card berth.
Red Sox, AL Central team name goes here, A's, and Yankees in the AL.

Nothing like getting fired right after sitting in the dugout during the all star game.

To be honest, its a classy move by the Astros. They could have easily fired him on Monday , but it would have ruined the game for him.

Yeah, I'm sure he had much more fun being on national TV and having his home crowd boo him as if he was Grady Little in Boston after last year's ALCS.
