View Full Version : Welcome To The Year's Most Boring Sports Day

I hate this day every year. No sports. Nothing. You would think someone (besides the WNBA, ugh) would step up and fill this day after the All Star break with something.
No baseball, of course. Football is a week away from rookies showing up for camp. Basketball and hockey are in their offseasons. Wimbledon is over. Golf doesn't start until Thursday. The MLS generally plays on the weekend. And even European soccer (for the most part) is in its offseason. Crud. The sports fan in me despises today. ;)
Hopefully, we'll get the Laker moves worked out, some big upset will happen in the Copa America, and several huge trades will go down in baseball. Oh and hockey will agree toa new CBA (yeah...right...).

I've got a softball game tonight at 8. You're more than welcome to come out.

Not European, but Copa America is in swing.
Tonight on Telefutura it's Chile v Costa Rica at 6.15pm, then Brazil v Paraguay at 8.15pm.
So I'm happy :)

I can handle one day off. Maybe Jimy Williams wil get fired today. Great reaction he got during introductions last night!
The NBA free agent period just started - maybe that'll provide something to hold your interest for 24 hours.

Most Boring?? Come on.
The Tour is finally moving into the mountains. Right now Richard Virenque has a ten minute lead on Armstrong.
I think it is a pretty exciting day for sports.

Even if we pretended to care about cycling, one day of racing in the middle of a 3-week race, and that being the only sporting event of significance for the entire day, does not make this an exciting day for "sports." For fans of cycling, maybe.

Most of the US is at work or asleep during the tour de france. It still provides US sports fans with no evening viewing.
Interestingly, even the dreadful WNBA punts this void. Their only games today are at 1pm and 2pm. Who is running this league? I am curious as to what the actual attendance (as opposed to tickets sold, which is the announced attendance) at midweek daytime WNBA games is. 30? 60? hundreds?
The MLS has two games, but neither has national coverage.
Tonight on ESPN: The Great Outdoor Games. I find some of this interesting (moreso than a WNBA game, anyway).
It really looks like Copa America is the best bet. The fact that it's broadcast in Spanish makes it more interesting.

I'm taking my wife to the Sarah McLachlan concert tonight. I'm going to go run and hide now.

Our local AM sports radio talk show guy does a segment every day at the end of the show to annoy a couple of his friends who always talk about how much they hate the WNBA. He and his producer talk "knowledgeably" about the standings, best players, win streaks, etc. (although they're just making it up as they go), while Natalie Merchant's Because the Night is playing in the background.
It's hilarious.
- We have the Tour de France all day long (and until the 3rd week of july)
- There is also La Copa America (South American Continental competition), soccer. Until late July too.
- It is also the U-19 European Championship (soccer)
- Then in August, French soccer championship starts again.
So, that's not that bad actually.

My wife is a big fan of hers and I took her to that concert as well on a previous tour. I'm not ashamed that I did something to make her happy, she does plenty to make me happy ;)

Well baseball is trying to bridge the gap. The AAA all-star game is tonight. ESPN2 will be showing the game at 8:00 EDT. Some good players who didn't play in the futures game will be on hand.

The reasoning behind this is, they want to bring out a lot of kids who are at day camps and such. For the Shock, it actually works pretty good, from what I have been told. Of course, I mean that in a relative sense. Attendance isn't really that great either way, at least when you compare it to the other major sports.

WHY, GOD, WHY?!? See what you've driven this man to by having no sports on this day? Give this man, something, anything where he can say "Sorry, honey, I can't go. The NBA Draft is today" or "Sorry, I can't go to that acoustic abomination because I have to watch the international whiffle ball championships on ESPN." It's just not right. Why have you forsaken us, God?

It's not so bad. His wife is a hottie, and his sacrifice will likely be rewarded.

I took my wife to see Bryan White and LeeAnn Rhimes a few years back. Long-term, it was well-worth the waste, uh, I mean investment of time.

But it does. It was something. It was certainly more than what we're getting today.

Come on, WNBA or the home run derby? I know which one I'd be excited to watch.
