Grieving family finds wrong body in casket

BELLAIRE, Michigan (AP) -- Authorities misidentified two teens in an auto crash that killed one and left the other in critical condition, stunning parents who realized their son was alive after seeing the wrong body in the casket.

For days, one family kept a bedside vigil for a bandaged-up boy whom they believed was their badly injured 16-year-old relative. Meanwhile, the other family prepared to bury the boy they thought was their dead 17-year-old relative.

But the moment Patrick Bement's parents saw the face of the boy in the casket at the funeral home, they feared a terrible mistake had been made.

"We told them, 'It's not our son. It's not Patrick,"' said Michele Bement, the boy's stepmother.

The Antrim County Sheriff's Office confirmed the error Wednesday and said it was conducting an investigation to determine what happened. Sheriff Terry L. Johnson offered condolences and apologies to the families of both teens.

Deputies said they were in the process of using dental records and fingerprints to positively identify the person killed in Saturday's accident on U.S. 131 north of Alba, about 35 miles from Traverse City.

Relatives said the victim was Nathaniel Smith, 16.

"You can't even put to words the emotions, other than what an immense, gross tragedy -- a double tragedy," said Smith's uncle, Steve Bohatch.

The crash happened as Bement, Smith and their 17-year-old male driver were headed home after spending several days at a cottage in northern Michigan. Their Saturn crossed the center-line and struck a camper being hauled by a pickup truck, deputies said.

The Saturn driver was the only person in the car wearing a seat belt and escaped with minor injuries.

Deputies said they found Bement's identification near the body, which was ejected from the car, and believed the body to be his. Smith's wallet and identification were in the trunk, and the officers at the scene believed Smith was in the back seat with major head and facial injuries.

On Monday, Bement's parents gathered at a Grand Rapids funeral home to prepare for visitation services and to view their son's body.

What they saw shocked them: The boy, who had straight hair, did not look at all like their curly haired son. Instead, the boy looked like Smith.

"They had told us to be prepared for a shock because it didn't look like him," Michele Bement said. "They kept saying it was because he had a lot of facial damage, a lot of muscle damage. They thought we were in denial."

Smith's mother, Oksana Bohatch, had even called her from the hospital to express her condolences and to say she could not attend the funeral, Bement said.

"It's a terrible situation," said prosecutor Charles Koop. "I don't know what words you can say to comfort family members when this type of error is made."

I know it's cold in such a situation to point this out...

...but this really adds to the sadness.

Let me get this right...

The kid in the hospital is the son of the people who were grieving, and the family sitting in the hospital was actually the family of the dead kid?

That is fucked

One is in the hospital, the other in the morgue. Until the dead body was viewed, the two sets of relatives were attending to the wrong victims.

Amazing. Too many emotions to describe. How can Bement's family not feel overjoyed that their son is alive after thinking he was dead? But how can they express that in this situation?

As the prosecutor said, what words can there possibly be? I think "We're terribly sorry" is about it and then I wouldn't want to hear another thing come out of your mouth.

Ok. About 2 weeks ago 3 classmates of mine and a graduate of 2005 were headed to Maine for vacation, and they veered off the road in New York. The driver went into the rumble strip on the highway, tried to overcorrect, and the truck tumbled several times over into the median. Well, 2 of them died. Another is still in the hospital with severe head trauma and I learned a few days ago he can say mom and dad now. The kid that will be a senior next year was the only one wearing a seatbelt, and he had minor injuries, scratches and bruises.

Buckle up.

Who was the driver that had minor injuries? Was their a third person in that car? If so, why didn't this person with just minor injuries pass along the information about who was where in the car?

Can anyone PLEASE explain to me why you wouldn't wear a seatbelt? I honestly can't remember a time where I haven't worn one.

Wearing a seatbelt is important. All the other safety features seem to be desingned with the assumption that the passengers will remain strapped into their seats.

I won't even put a car into motion unless everyone is buckled up. If somebody decides to be a smartass and unbuckles, I pull the damn car over. People think I'm being an asshole about it, but I'm not going to let some of this kind of stupid shit go down while I'm driving the car. It's a no-brainer to wear the seat belt. I was wearing them before there was a law requiring it here. Only an idiot would ride in a car without wearing one.

My mom doesn't like wearing a seat belt. But when she gets in MY car, I make sure she and my dad always wear one. Hell, I won't even start the car until EVERYONE in my car is wearing a seat belt.

Wearing a seatbelt is very important. Being an firefighter/EMT and such, I've seen the difference seat belts make and its a HUGE difference. I used to let friends or relatives who didn't like to wear one go without, but once I went on a call and saw the difference between not wearing a seatbelt vs. wearing one, there is no way anyone goes without one in my car now!

What confuses me is what kind of condition must the kid in the hospital be in for his family not to be able to realize that it isn't their son?
