Do you want players that I've seen or just anybody in general?
For example, I could name Mays for CF, but I never saw him play.

I was going to name 9 white sox players, but I figured I would spare everyone.
I love watching great defense so here is my list.
C: Carlton Fisk
1b: Frank Thomas (Best fielding DH there is!)
2b: Roberto Alomar in his prime
SS: Luis Aparicio
3B: Brooks Robinson (His range and quickness. I still can't believe some of the plays he pulled off)
LF: Bo Jackson (Some of the throws he made were unreal. UNREAL!)
CF: Torri Hunter (I hate this motherf'er, steals at least one hr from the white sox every series, the guy can play some serious defense)
RF: Sammy Sosa (We traded him for George Bell. GEORGE BELL)
SP: Pedro Martinez (His early years with the Red Sox you felt like he could throw a no hitter at any time)
RP: MR. ZERO!!

c-Carlton Fisk
Fiercly independent, a clutch gamer, and if it wasn't for the dumbass Red Sox management, a lifer at Fenway(they neglected to mail him his contract in time making him a free agent). He ranks behind Bench and I-Rod for defense, and his bat was not as good as Piazza's, but he, like his arch-enemy Thurman Munson (RIP), wanted to win any all costs.
1b-Mark McGwire
The summer of '98 was magicial. What he and Sosa did that year was incredible. Bringing Roger Maris' family to Saint Louis so they could celebrate what the New York press would not let Maris do when he broke Ruth's record was a class act all the way. Picking up his son and saying "I love you." as he touched home plate after he hit 62...well it's getting dusty in here. My great uncle was a lifelong Cards fan and we talked about him quite a bit that summer. I'm glad he was alive to see that. I got married that summer(it really was magicial) and McGwire hit #46 that day. No bottle of Andro can undo what he meant that summer.
2b-Ryne Sandberg
He just loved to play ball. Great glove, exceptional bat. Truly appreciated in Chicago.
ss-Nomar Garciaparra
Ten years ago, Nomah stays a Sox forever. It's too bad that it's such a big business now. I don't think any Boston player since Yaz retired captured the love and respect that #5 did when he emerged. He seems to take that direct lineage that started with Ted Williams and ran with it. I hope he finds the peace he's looking for next season either in Boston or Los Angeles.
3b-Greg Nettles
The vaunted enemy 3rd baseman for the hated Yankees, man could he field. Watch Game 3 of the '78 Series sometime on ESPN Classic. Saved five runs. Incredible.
lf-Jim Rice
Without question, my all time favorite player. There was not anything he could not do. He replaced Yaz in left. He would have hit the game winning home run in Game 6 if Stanley could have found home plate in 1986{edit: baseball-refrence says that he didn't hit any homers in that series.}. Probably if he had played in New York he would have been compared to Willie Mays, good glove, excellent power, hit for average, and deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. His skills dropped way to quick after '86.
cf-Kirby Puckett
An infectous enthusiasm for playing ball in an era of folks that played for money. He willed the Twins to two World Series. I carry his baseball card in my wallet. So he's a bit nasty at home, no one's perfect.
rf-Hank Aaron
Quite possibly the most underrated player ever to play baseball. If you look up class in the dictionary, his picture is next to it. My first hero.
sp-Nolan Ryan
Never the greatest in a season, if you asked hitters from 1970 to 1990 who they feared most on the mound, it would be him. I loved watching him pitch. His best season may have been in '87, 270k's and an ERA of 2.76, but with the Astros crappy offense, he went 8-16. Take some more Advil and give Robin Ventura some more noogies, we need you for another nine inings.

C: Ivan Rodriguez
The arm, it's all about the arm. If this guy hit .120 I'd still take him just to throw runners out all day long.
1B: Carlos Delgado
Been a fan of this guy's since he was a catcher. Suffered through the growing pains of left field, and now enjoying watching him become a fairly good fielder at first base. Going to be a sad, sad day when he leaves the Jays.
2B: Roberto Alomar
Grew up watching this guy make amazing plays in places he shouldn't have been able to get to. No matter how stupid he can be (sigh), I'm not sure I've seen anybody make more highlight plays on such a regular basis.
3B: Matt Williams
Class. Don't think he ever saw one of his home runs clear the fence, he was too busy legging it out to first to notice. Great leather at the hot corner and a cannon across the infield. Like the Expo's, had a chance at something special until the strike hit, and over 162 game spread when the next season started, he broke the HR record.
SS: Ozzie Smith
I'd love to say Tony Fernandez here, but Ozzie holds the all time single best play in my opinion. The drive up the middle that changes direction while he's fully laid out, only to snatch it out of the air with his bare-hand, then make the play. Defence up the middle is key, and to see these two in their prime together would be amazing.
LF: Rickey Henderson
For all the attitude, still the best leadoff hitter of all time. How many guys can say that they've stolen more bases in a year than any team might this season? Might carry a defensive replacement on the bench, but hey, it's only left field ;)
CF: Devon White
Yes, another homer pick, but a guy who was feared in the field, at the plate and on the basepaths. In a few years I'd probably take Vernon Wells here, but Devo set the tone during the WS years in Toronto.
RF: Vladimir Guerrero
Love watching him at the dish, a guy who holds absolutely nothing back and is absolutely fearless. Arm like a cannon, and always like seeing those loafers get thrown out at first by an alert right fielder. (honorable mention: Junior Felix, always fun watching those throws to home, Joe Carter for THE home run).
SP: Juan Guzman
One of the hardest luck pitchers I've ever seen. Some great ERA's over the years, but so many no decisions and probably the worst run support for the majority of his career that he'll never be considered anything above mediocre. Him and Williams were far and away my favorite players growing up.
CL: Tom Henke
8th inning in Toronto, and it was Ward and Henke time, hard to remember a time when that wasn't automatic. While we may have hated Ecks whenever we had to play the A's, still had more confidence that we'd do something against him before they'd ever touch the Terminator.
Yeah, I know, a lot of Jays from the glory years, but that was a team that I think could match up against many of the greatest teams from any era and give them a run for their money.

C: Johnny Bench, still one of my heroes
1B: Sean Casey (not the best player, but maybe the best guy in baseball)
2B: Joe Morgan, yes he can drone on in the booth - but one of the alltime greats at his position
3B: Mike Schmidt, class act and porn stache - the killer combo
SS: Barry Larkin, Mr. Red. Nice to see him doing well in '04.
LF: Adam Dunn, this kid can slam it. I think he'll show the naysayers why he is more Harmon Killebrew than Greg Luzinski.
CF: Ken Griffey Jr., man, I wish he could stay healthy. A fragile body has thrown stumbling blocks in a path to the Hall.
RF: Vlad Guerrero
SP: Kerry Wood
A very Reds-heavy list as Cincy has always been my team. Notable exceptions include Schmidt (who just edged out Hoosier Scott Rolen), Vlad Guerrero (who is a flat-out stud), and Kerry Wood. Ever since I watched him K 20 Astros as a kid, I have thought the world of Kerry. He doesn't seem to be the same pitcher he was then, but is still pretty fun to watch.

1B- I guess Lou Gehrig New York Yankees Cuz of the Pride of the Yankees. Never really developed a big favorite here
2B- tie Rod Carew California Angels, Glen Hubbard Atlanta Braves
Carew was the star, and could swing the bat . Hubbard was the home town hero to me... better than Horner, better than Neikro, better than Murphy.
3B- George Brett Kansas City Royals He was the best player in Baseball... course the Pine tar incident was funny at the time and still funny today
SS- Rabbit Maranville Boston Braves I remember reading about him as a kid. Course the name helped stick him in my memory. One of the early defensive stars.
LF- Carl Yaztrymski Boston Red Sox I have never been an American League Guy, but he seemed special.

C-Irod (yes, eventhough he played for Texas, hits for average, steals bases, has pop, and also plays awesome D)
1B-McGwire (He looked much better in Oakland green and gold rather than St. Louis Red!)
2B-Alomar (Grew up watching him play spring training ball in Arizona for the Padres, and liked him ever since)
SS-Ripken (Great player, even a greater guy)
3B-Chavez (The best all around third basemen in the bigs right now IMO)
RF-Gwynn (The way he hit was just amazing, I also grew up watching him play in AZ as a kid)
CF-Griffey (Yes, eventhough he was a Mariner, just amazing to watch him roam around center field in his hay day)
LF-Ricky Henderson (The most exciting player IMO on the basepaths)
SP-Dave Stewart/Tim Hudson (Davey led us to the 1989 WS Championship as well as the WS before and after that, as for Tim, for a guy who is like 5'10'', 175lbs, he's amazing with the way he pitches and refuses to back down)
RP-Eckersley (his BB to K ratio was ridiculous, also a huge part of our 3 consecutive WS appearances, when he came in, it was game over [except for stupid Kirk Gibson  ])

C: Jason Kendall
I guess just cause he's been one of the better Pirates for a while now. I could imagine I-Rod taking this spot now that he's a Tiger and easier to root for.
1B: Cecil Fielder/Sid Bream
I'm not necessarily a Tigers fan, but being about ten years old and living in Michigan when he hit 51 home runs made him the biggest deal around school. A wide array of pronunciations of "Cecil" had been uttered in the halls of Mauck Elementary, to be sure.
Sid Bream qualifies for a tie as he spent significant time with my two favorite teams, the braves and pirates.
2B: Jeff Blauser
It seems like he was in Atlanta forever.
3B: Bob Horner
This is from when I was a toddler watching the braves with my dad.
SS: Chipper Jones
He really didn't play much Shortstop in the majors, but I still remember his #1 draft pick topps card and it said SS. My favorite of the current Braves, although he's having a rough season.
LF: Ron Gant
I could've put Bonds here as he was my favorite when he was a Pirate, but now that he's a confirmed nutcase/asshole I won't. Ron Gant and Tom Glavine were my favorite Braves in the 90's.
CF: Dale Murphy
He was my favorite player when I was really really young. He was MVP when I was 2 and 3. I called him "Murphy Mart" as that was a store in the town we lived in at the time. It might've been a chain of stores back then, I'm not really sure. I was 2.
RF: Brian Giles
He has basically been the best Pirate since Bonds and probably one of the most underrated players in baseball over the past 5 or so years. I always end up with him on my fantasy team as well, so I've just stayed a fan since he left the Bucs.
SP: Tom Glavine
My favorite thing about Glavine and the Braves of the late 80's and early 90's was watching them develop into a good team over night. For some reason this was always best summed up to me with the story about Glavine suddenly discovering a grip to a new and good pitch (I can't recall what type of pitch it was, as it's been like 14 years or so) while fielding a grounder. It felt like a microcosm of the whole thing.

LF-Barry Bonds (Most misunderstood player in baseball and greatest)

My only two favorite players when I was growing up were Steve Carlton and Mike Schmidt. Once they retired and I grew up, I stopped having favorite players. In fact, I barely have a real allegiance to my favorite teams in most sports these days - at least, not the same kind of "do or die with every game" mentality I used to have.
I'm moreso a fan of the games of baseball, football, etc., these days, rather than the players or teams. I'm not sure if that's because of free agency, player attitudes/lifestyles, or just simply the reality of being 32 years old and having a hard time "looking up" to someone who is about my age or even younger.
Whatever it is, I really can't answer this question fully. If you ask me about favorite teams in particular seasons (i.e., 84 Tigers, 80 Phillies, 91 Braves), that might be an easier question to answer.

RP: Lee Smith - More than anyone the Cubs ever gave up, including Maddux and Palmeiro, I hated it when Lee Smith left the Cubs.

1B-Will Clark (Class act, played very hard, solid 1b)
It was hard to leave him off my list. I would check the box score every day to see how he did, and there hasn't been another player since that I have done that with. He just had the misfortune of playing the same position as my all-time favorite player at any position (McCovey). But he's right there with McCovey, Mays, and Marichal in my book.

C - Craig Biggio: Sure, I prefer him at 2B but that spot's taken
1B - Mark Grace: It pains me to not have room for both Gracie and Bagwell but when push comes to shove, I've gotta go with the guy who fields better (what can I say, I'm a sucker for defense); Grace got hosed on so many Gold Gloves it's not even funny *kicks JT Snow in the shins*
2B - Ryne Sandberg: Favorite player, period; Such a beautiful fielder and carried a pretty good stick, too
SS - Cal Ripken: He was the best SS in the game hands down when I was growing up and later on; Unfortunately neither of my teams could get anything remotely resembling a SS at the time as Rafael "Mendoza" Ramirez played for the Astros and Shawn "thank god I have Mark Grace at 1st to clean up my errors and, oh, don't throw it to me low and away because I'll swing every time" Dunston was on the Cubs
3B - Ken Caminiti: It killed me that he got his MVP year in San Diego and then his tragic drug problem...
OF - Lance Berkman: I've loved him ever since the 'stros drafted him out of Rice and I knew from day 1 he was going to be good
OF - Sammy Sosa: Say what you will about the guy but he loves to play the game and he tries to be a good ambassador for it
OF - Andre Dawson: Along with Ryno and eventually Grace, he was leading the team when I was growing up and would come home and watch WGN every afternoon
OF - Tony Gwynn: Sure, this makes four outfielders, but who cares? I had absolutely no rooting interest in his team but I loved how sweet his swing was and that you could tell he worked so hard and was just a student of the game; I have no idea how anyone could not like him
SP - There were lots; Mike Scott was fun for the Astros but I could never really get behind him like a lot of fans. I followed Greg Maddux to Atlanta after he left the Cubs and he's still one of my favorite pitchers. And despite Fox's attempts to singlehandedly overexpose the guy at every Cubs game they show, I really like watching Kerry Wood pitch ("Oh, and there's Kerry Wood in the dugout" "There's Kerry Wood heading to the locker room to use the urinal" "There's Kerry Wood's wife picking her nose"). You know, I'm kindof drawing a blank here which is odd. If I had some baseball cards here in front of me, I'd be reeling off tons of names.
RP - Say what you will about this being an invented position but I love what goes with it: the rock music, the pressure, and the guy that almost always has crazy hair and a crazy look in his eyes. I've got a special place in my heart for Billy Wagner. You knew when he was in the game it was over and to get it up to 100 on the gun (and then develop that filthy slider after Randy Johnson came to town), well, damn he's just good. I always thought Mitch Williams was the most fun: always an adventure. I remember one game with him in either 88 or 89, he walks a guy, gives up a single, and hits a guy to load the bases with no outs in the 9th then proceeds to strike out the heart of the Phils lineup including Mike Schmidt. Same with last year's Royals closer Mike MacDougal- he has issues with finding the plate (and is, unfortunately, a mechanical mess so he's got some arm troubles) and that made things interesting. As for guys outside my teams, I've always liked watching Robb Nen and Trevor Hoffman pitch.

Glad to know I'm not the only one :) God damn lights. I'd get home at 3:30'ish, dad would get home at 4:30ish and I'd work on my homework in the living room and we'd watch the Cubs, I probably saw 100 Cubs games a year or more in the 80s. Great memories, and the main reason i'm the big baseball fan that I am.

1984 is one of my favorite baseball years ever. One, because of the Tigers. But also, because that was the year we first got cable and I spent the summer following the Cubs' almost-magical season and listening to Harry Caray on WGN every afternoon. Good times.

Same here. You can't beat coming home from school every day and watching a game. There's just nothing better.
The Royals deal since they took the broadcasts in house is pretty nice these days in that they have a good 140 games on a year so you get pretty much one day a week when you don't see the games but the others are like clockwork. Actually, they just don't broadcast some of the west coast games and then one every couple of weeks. The down side being that they're almost all night games except on weekends :(

Well, I'm going to need some time to make up my favorite team of all time, but here's my favorite Phillies team of all time (from 1985-present, the time when I started to watch the Phillies). It should be a pretty weak team to the rest of you, since the Phillies have been essentially terrible since then.
C - Darren Daulton... Mike Lieberthal is better, but his attitude turns me off. Daulton really knew how to play a crowd, and hit some big home runs in the 93 season
1B - Thome .. Von Hayes was better than alot of people gave him credit for, I think too many people had unrealistic expectations for him.
2B - Juan Samuel. Man could fly on the bases. Was having a really good career until he got traded to the Mets for Dykstra.
3B - Rolen. I know. Most people are saying how could you pick him over Schmidt. To be honest, Schmidt had a crap attitude most of the time he was here. What about Rolen you ask, he essentially wrote his own ticket out of town? HE WAS RIGHT!! The Phillies were ripping their fans off , claiming they were a small market team. He didn't like the direction they were going, and got out. It wasn't anything personal with the fans. Best defensive 3b ever.
SS - Kevin Stocker - Pretty close race with Jimmy Rollins here. Stocker really saved the 93 club with his glove and solid bat. Its a shame that his career ended so soon.
LF - Pat Burrell by default. Pete Incavilea (sp) second.
CF - Dykstra. Left everything he had out on the field, and around the tree the night him and Daulton were caught DUIing.
RF - Abreu. One of the most underappeciated guys the last 5 years. Just now is he beginning to realize if he works hard, he can truely be one of the games "Great" players instead of mearly an above avg player.
SP - Schilling - Pitched some HUGE games. Still might be the best big game pitcher out there.
CP - Mesa. Had a rough last year, but for the most part was very solid during his career here. Underrated. Lets bad outings stay in his head for too long.
