Here is a review for the Macintosh version from a writer that totally hates boxing.
http://www.macgamesandmore.com/review_ubm.html
If half of what this writer claims to be in the game is there I will be totally blown away.(both inside and outside the ring) :D
I am off to download the demo.

Tried to demo and was disappointed. There are several obvious bugs, and the scoring fo the bouts is out of whack (many 10-8 and 10-7 rounds for close rounds where no knockdown occured, 10-10 rounds where one fighter dominated, etc.). It's like ti was made from someone who did not have an ounce of desire to make the matches realistic at all.

What about he Dynasty building part of the game? (finanacials/ Staff Members / recruiting boxers). Basically how did you like the "Out" of the ring management parts of the game? Is it a good Empire building Sim?
Edited to add: Was it Version 1.1 ?

Dunno which version it was. The management part of the game seemed simplistic to me. Hardly any real decisions to make. But even if it had a good management part, I'd still hate it because the results and rankings are horrible. Imagine FOF exactly the way it is, except rushers either rush for 10 yards in a game, or 400 and no in between. It'd suck. This is more like crippled FOF with those 10 yard and 400 yard rushers.

dola,
It looks pretty, though. :)
The management part of the game seemed simplistic to me. Hardly any real decisions to make. But even if it had a good management part, I'd still hate it because the results and rankings are horrible. I don't understand this. I went 1-1 in my demo. Both fights ended before by KO, actually one ended with a TKO. (8th and 11th round) The fighter that won his fight moved up 8 spots in the ranking and the fighter that lost moved down 2 spots.
I will tell you this, that 25-minute demo is not going to sell to many games. And, the lack of a help file really puts you watching the 25 minute clock tick down.
The boxers available screen look like they just ripped off Championship Manager. All boxers that are listed with their rankings and you can further sort it down by selecting either "Boxer that are interested in signing with you", or better yet "Free boxers". After you select your boxer it is time to make an offer(NOt available in demo Version)
I started out with 255 coins and quickly upgraded my exercise equipment to the max, hired a Specialist for my doctor, and entered into 2 different advertising contracts. Then entered into 2 fight that paid 5 coins and 12 coins each. So, if the game had continued I would of been completely broke in under 6 months.
Could not find a print command anywhere. And, damit I want some help files. Hopefully some fan sites will pop up somewhere that will explain some of the basic strategies for this game.
The fights were kind of fun to watch. I was just clueless as to exactly what was going on behind the scenes. Besides the Mac-Boy link posted above I can not find a single article/thread from someone who has played the full version....Anyone???
So, Let the 25 minute countdown begin. :D
BTW---I cant wait to see a Dynasty thread on this one.

25 minute countdown? Unbelievable...
There goes another potential boxing sim. I've been waiting for one for a long time.
In the meantime, I've been having a blast with an on-line sim, WeBL...

I can't hold back any longer. Now that I am starting to find some more reviews.

I love the fact that all the reviews mention how long it will take you to crawl your way to the top. Could this be the empire building, financial sports sim I have been waiting for?(probably not)
I love the fact that you get to start at the bottom of the bottom of the bottom.
So, it is time to comb out the Mullet and crank up the Def Leppard casset; because I am young 18 again. I have a couple of coins in my pocket and in the many years to come I am going to change the face of boxing.

Hello there,
I am the programmer of that game :)
I know it isn't perfect, but hey, I tried ALONE to make that game (and I am quite proud of it, since it is better than some commercial ones).
You should encourage me to improve it, not demolish saying that matches are completely random ;)
Anyway, next update I'll fix the scoring system, that is really wrong, as sabotai pointed out.
p.s. remember that the game is shareware, and doesn't have 1$ million budget... it doesn't cost 49$ either ;)

Welcome to the FOFC. This is a really good place for ideas to improve the game.

Yeah, and other stuff too.
Hey guys, there's this girl that I work with over at my new job and she's super cute! So I was thinking about asking her out and all, but I've got this huge zit on my forehead. What would you guys....

Be a man and pop the hell out of it.
And welcome to the board Jack Norton. Once you get that scoring fixed, I'll give it another look. That was the biggest complaint about the game that I had.

Awesome. I dunno how you found this place, but welcome aboard.
I love that we have actual game programmers hanging around this place.

I tried WebL for a while... just couldn't get into it.
I actually bought UBM because I was really wanting a career boxing sim. I think it really needs more depth and there's several annoying bugs that need fixed. Overall, I think it has potential but just isn't there yet. I do hope the developer continues working on the game because I like the basic setup and think there's potential for a solid game.

I've uploaded a new beta version here:
http://www.didone.com/games/UBMTrial.exe
I fixed in particular the scoring system, now should be much more realistic.
If you want to give it a try and give some feedback (hope you don't find more bugs!) I would be grateful :)
Thanks!

Jack, did you change the demo/trial time allowed? For those of us on dial-up, 25 minutes of time just isn't worth the effort.
By the way, welcome to the board. You'll find that we're not shy about commenting, but the comments in general will be constructive in nature. That's why we get visits from the makers of FOF, OOTP, CM, EHM, FBB and many others (I'm not slighting anyone not mentioned above, I just went for an example of each sport).
Looking forward to the update. I hope I can give it a try this weekend.
Can you continue a career after updating?
Jack Norton

To Blackadar: yes, I've noticed that you aren't shy ;) but is ok, I prefer constructive critics than no feedback at all. The 20 minutes time limit is still there, but you can restart the game as many times as you want (even if you'll have to restart career every time). I don't know yet if I'll give more time or not, so far the game seem to sell well with this time limit. Of course it could even sell more with a larger limit, so if I get enough comments on that I'll change it. Anyway the demo is 4.3mb so even with dialup is only 10minutes to download it :)
To Bee: yes, if you just install the demo over the previous installation (same directory) you can continue previous career with new version.
