KFC supplier in cruelty furor
Animal rights group video purportedly shows workers at W.Va. plant torturing chickens.
July 20, 2004: 9:34 AM EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - An animal rights group has released a videotape showing slaughterhouse workers with a KFC Corp. supplier jumping on live chickens and slamming them into walls, apparently for fun.

After KFC officials saw the videotape Monday, surreptitiously shot by an investigator for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), they said they would seek dismissal of the workers, inspect the slaughterhouse more often and end their relationship if the cruelty was repeated, the New York Times reported.

A spokeswoman for KFC, a unit of Louisville, Ky.-based Yum Brands Inc., (YUM: Research, Estimates) was quoted by the newspaper as saying the fast-food chain "wouldn't tolerate the type of behavior in the video."

Pilgrim's Pride Corp., (PPC: Research, Estimates) the owner of the slaughterhouse and the No. 2 U.S. poultry processor, said it was "appalled" by the videotape, the Times said.

The videotape, entitled "KFC's House of Horrors" includes sounds of birds screeching while being thrown against walls and stomped on by workers as loud music blares in the background.

The tape was shot at a Pilgrim's Pride plant in Moorefield, W.Va., according to the PETA web site, where the video is posted. The investigator worked at the plant from October 2003 to May 2004.

Pilgrim's Pride won KFC's "Supplier of the Year" award in 1997, the Times reported.

Representatives from Yum Brands and Pilgrim's Pride were not immediately available to comment on the report.

Are people so bored in West Virginia that they have to turture chickens for fun? Really sick.

I've always been a pro at this sport. Oh wait, actual chickens?? That's disgusting.

You've never played "Cholf"?

Cholf is the golf-like sport using two-by-fours and the live chickens that happen to stray at the loading dock.

I hear they even have chicken olympics in Arkansas.

So they're killing them by slamming them against the walls as opposed to their standard slaughtering methods? Oh the humanity!

Note to self: Stop at KFC on the way home.

For the record I was going to title this thread "Have you choked your chicken today?" but chickened-out (pun intended).

Speaking of PETA videos...

I think that this is the first time in recorded history that I have ever agreed with PETA. Doesn't surprise me that those fuckers are from San Angelo. Nothing good ever comes out of San Angelo...

Edit: Video doesn't appear to be working anymore. Basically it was a video of two fuckwad teenagers attacking a stray dog that was laying next to a coke machine. Terrible, mean stuff...

Doesn't sound as good as my video of tying a kitten in a large box kite and sending it up on three rolls of string.

Did I ever tell you about the time when I was a kid and we poured gas on a cat and lit it on fire? Damn, didn't know what was worse, it's horrible cries of pain, or the fact that the flame was being fed by him running away faster and faster. ;)

Oh, I hate PETA.

A common thing that is done with dead chickens, (ones that die before being 'processed'), is that they are ground into cattle feed (for the cows who are not allowed to eat their natural diets). How many of these tortured chickens ended up being fed to cows?

Everyday there are more reasons to be vegetarian.

I hope PETA realizes that this kind of stuff is far more effective in turning the heads of ordinary citizens than protesting outside of ballparks and dumping fake blood on people wearing furs. This is tangible evidence that anyone can understand. Not that I agree with their overall position on the use of animals in any instance, but stuff like this needs to be stopped.

Wow these guys have made it a sport! All my chicken choking is purely recreational.

On another note.. these are animals that are bred for the sole purpose of them dying so what does it matter if these people do it with a stick rather than the conventional method that they were going to get in about 5 minutes if they hadn't been pulled from the assembly line to smack around a little?

Look at this from another point of view... Besides the 'abuse' or 'torture' of these animals that are doomed to die soon anyway, do you want this kind of activity contaminating the food supply? There are procedures to be followed, and standards to be maintained. None of them involve beating them with sticks, throwing them against walls, stomping them with your new steel-toed boots, and spitting tobacco down their throats.

He's probably not kidding. Besides, they were just giving the cat a gentle hazing.

Was in training there 2 times, most recently this past July-October. Nice place to play golf. Besides that....

From the Austin newspaper:

"A sickening Austin ritual has returned. Someone is throwing kittens off highway overpasses, killing them. Police say in the past few weeks 10 to 15 kittens have been thrown to the pavement along I-35, Mopac, US 183 and Loop 360. Only two of the kittens survived. One, named Gypsy, was just three weeks old when someone tossed her onto I-35. A passing motorist called police; and Gypsy was saved. The cat has recovered and is now being cared for by a loving family. Authorities say this is the third straight year this has been happening. It's a felony crime. Officers say if you see someone doing it, write down their license plate number and dial 911. There's even a $3 thousand dollar reward for help with a capture. The money is being offered by Animal Trustees of Austin. For more information, contact Missy McCullough. The phone number is 450-1504."

What are you doing down here in Texas, Hurst?
